I had a play with the S5 in a Phones 4 U store yesterday in London.

Really liked it. Was comparing it to my S4, it's a bit bigger, heavier and feels good in hand.

The camera was much, much faster and accurate. Feels like a very solid update, but not some quantum leap over the S4.

Also played with the new HTC One and that felt great too. Two very solid phones.

Yesterday I got to try out the M8 HTC One and the new S5. Both phones are really good. I will say that the htc still had a small bit of lag but hey it was a demo unit.

But that S5....man oh man. As a former S3 user the S5 is the upgrade I wished the S4 was from the start. I never could find a sweet spot for the S4 but Samsung's newest phone has checked all the right boxes far as I'm concerned. I'm all but set to add one to my plan on the 11th. It is truly the best Android I've ever used, I'd even put it ahead of the Note III.

Good point.

I do prefer the slightly smaller form factor of the S4 but if the size increase is necessary for the waterproofing etc, then fair enough.

If I left the iPhone in the next year or so (not likely), this would be the phone I'd leave for.

Did anyone try out Samsungs fingerprint implementation!?

That is a pretty glowing review considering the author says he is an all Apple guy

That is good but speaking for me, I do not care about the specs/screens anymore and havent for the past couple years. Phone have been good enough for awhile for me but I am glad to see companies pushing ahead

AMOLED was a dirty word two years ago. The Note 3 and GS4 pushed it, and the GS5 seems to have perfected it.

Over saturation will probably be present still, but that is configurable.

Very encouraging for display tech in general.

Thankfully, they seem to have fixed colors for good this time around. I couldn't tell it was an AMOLED screen when I saw it on Friday. I put my 5S next to it and thought it looked great.

According to the Display Mates review, it has the most accurate colors and white balance of any phone. That is very impressive to me. It's what I've been waiting for -- an AMOLED with accurate colors, white that is white, and black that is black. The GS4 never looked white to me.

Oh, and did you see the brightness measurement with automatic brightness enabled? 698 cd/m2!

I am no Samsung fan boy, or hater. I am a smartphone agnostic, don't really care what brand I use. Over my years of Android phones, it's been pretty equal; HTC and Samsung, with one LG in there.

Anyways I went to my local ATT store today to see the new HTC One M8 in person. And the M8 is a beauty, but did not blow me away or anything. The screen looked a bit washed out average, and it had a bit of lag swiping around. Overall I thought the M8 was nice, but nothing to blow me away, and it felt too tall and heavy for just a 5" screen. Then the ATT sales lady said they had the S5 too. Which I wasn't even one bit interested in at all. After seeing the S5 release all over the web, I felt it looked like a ho-hum minor update to the S4, nothing worth my time. Boy was I wrong.

The S5 was GORGEOUS :D They had it in white, and that screen  Best smartphone screen I have ever seen. And the recent display reviews of the S5 also call it the best screen ever made for a smartphone, being the brightest ever manufactured, and deep colors, and more accurate whites finally. My face looked like a cartoon, with my jaw dropping down to the floor, I was that impressed with the screen.

Samsung Galaxy S5's screen dubbed 'the best performing smartphone display;

DisplayMate, who carried out its in-depth screen tests on the S5, S4 and Galaxy Note 3, dubbed the Galaxy S5 "the best performing smartphone display that we have ever tested."

And then Touchwiz, which I am no fan of, and especially the way Samsung hasn't really changed it's style or theme for years now. Well the TW on the S5 is tons better, like much much better looking. The flat look and style of the new S5 TW is so much cooler looking, and the menu and notification widgets just look more modern, and matching current Android. Where as TW on the Note 3 and S4 look super outdated and old fashioned now. And there was zero lag on this S5 test unit, it was warp speed fast.

Oh yeah it's waterproof too, up to 6 feet deep submerged in water, and 100% dust proof. Waterproofing now seems like such a smart idea, I know Sony really started it, I just think every brand and type of Smartphone needs to be waterproofed, just seems like a no brainier for keeping your phone safe.

Overall I left the ATT store, meant to see the HTC One M8, and not even caring to see the S5. But I am drooling for the S5 now.

Not that long ago, this phone was maligned by many. Now, it seems it is going to be a lot of people's next phone:rolleyes:. It's not a Note 3 killer, so I'm keeping mine, but it's a pretty solid upgrade.

Too each their own, but for me ....

Hardware:
Bigger Screen, might not seem big on paper but a .1 or .2 makes a noticeable different.
Faster processor
Better camera
Support for 128GB MicroSD card
Bigger battery
Fingerprint Scanner
Water resistant, up to 30 minutes, up to a depth of 1m.
Heart Rate monitor
Wi-Fi 802.11ac and 2X2 MIMO

Software:
Revamped TW which I doubt you'll see on the S4 for at least 6 months, if that.
Ultra power saving mode seems nice especially since you can add or subtract what limited apps can run.

In my book that sounds like a decent upgrade to me, and I most likely left out some stuff. Pretty sure this level of upgrade would leave most iPhone users happy, as history suggests.

And concerning the lack of 3gb ram that everyone is bickering about, memory is probably still going to always show about 1.2gb free ram anyways, due to management.

I don't know if I want to wait on the Note 4. Might end up getting the S5, then selling it to get the Note 4 when it comes out.

Seems pretty decent to me. What other flagships on the way will blow folks out of the water? The Z2, M8, Moto X2, etc. etc? Not really.

Pictures from Vietnam...great pictures!

these pictures are amazing in the level of detail!

Awesome awesome camera!

More shame on you HTC!!!

But with the HTC you make the image wobble parallax style. Nobody cares about capturing great detail and blowing images up ;):p

Yep - the 4mp Ultrapixel was vastly out gunned last year by the competition. This year that difference has become a vast gulf of a difference. 16-20mp vs 4 ....

If I had to buy a Z2, S5 or HTC One - i'd still likely go with the S5 despite my dislikes. Thankfully I don't have to buy - so I'm going to wait to see what Moto X 2, Lumia 1020 successor, Note 4 and iPhone 6 bring to the table (unless temptation gets the better of me).

I am in the boat as you MRU..... I was fed up with Samsung for Knox and sold my Note 3. Only to get a S4 because of the camera. I do like Samsung phones...they just fit my needs. I bought the HTC One M8 because of the design and build quality. Only to be let down by the camera. I should have known better...but as you say temptation got the better of me! I do not know if i can resist getting the S5....

When someone checks it out at an AT&T store, please try the audio. The display one I tried the audio began to crackle at around 70% and the unit started to vibrate pretty badly in my hand. I would probably never listen at that level and more so would have earphones on most of the time but it was rather disturbing. I showed this to the rep at the store and of course they were quick to say it was a demo device so .....

lol, yep we've done near exact same (for same reasoning - despise KNOX) and yet I can envision both us with an S5 before the end of may :D :p
