The memory concern I had and posted here previously about Touchwiz using up a lot of memory resulting in re-loading when multi-tasking clearly demonstrated here in the second part of the video.

I previously also mentioned how when I went to compare my Google Edition S4 to the Touchwiz S5 the S4 GPE fractionally was faster - and again here we can see something similar with the Nexus 5.

Touchwiz still needs a bucket load of optimisation.
TouchWiz just needs to be trashed ....

It's the main reason I'll hardly buy another Samsung device (I could consider only GPE version).
Samsung philosophy is just "throw at the wall and see what sticks" with their devices and the software .... this results in very good hardware bloated by crappy software.

The M8 is easier to see in sunlight, i have had all 3:) and live East Coast Australia.

Do you have an M8, an iPhone 5S and a Note 3 ? Wow ....

Problem is it's an AMOLED display, so it's not that bright even at 100%. Trust me.

At 100% it's as bright as my Nexus 7 2013 at 30%. You have to take into consideration that it's an old display (2 years old). I think it doesn't even reach 300 nits, whereas the SGS5 and Nexus 5 reach 500.

That's why I prefer IPS displays over AMOLED.

My Nexus 7 2013 is always at 30% brightness just to compare to my phone. The SGS3 has a very very dim display :D:D

Nexus 7 screen is ver bright indeed .... But your hardly is 2 years old since nexus 7 2013 was released last summer :D

I was actually gonna post a link to that same video and say the same thing about the RAM and speed!

I'm waiting for his review on the S5 but that video was very revealing indeed.

Just saw it and definitely expected that to happen. Was very interested in seeing the comparison.

It just shows what I previously said when I tried the S5: that it didn't felt very fast. It doesn't have lag, but it is just slower than a Nexus. I compared it to my brief experience with the Nexus 5. Opening the multitasking window is one great example, and apps closing on the background just confirmed what I also said a few posts back: that 2GB RAM won't be enough in the near future for this device.

But at least it's got a great camera and decent battery life it seems.
2 Gb won't be enough ?!?
That is true only for Samsung and their crappy software interface !
Actually KitKat is designed to run on 512 Mb devices and my nexus 7 with 2 Gb of ram runs smooth and fast even with several apps loaded.

This is quite different from the good light shots you posted before ...
Would you mind to post another picture with similar light conditions ?

Thanks for posting that, quite a revealing comparison indeed. TouchWiz still remains the real downer of Samsung devices... I don't quite understand how such a huge multi-billion corporation can't manage to get something like that cleaned up (and better looking).

Anyway, so from what you were saying earlier, that sort of reloading would pretty much not happen on the Note 3 given its extra gig of RAM, right?

Yep, typical Samsung behavior: our UI is crappy ? Who cares, just throw in another giga of ram ...

Yes, the display is definitely the best thing about this phone (the battery also is great).

So it seems the GPE will fix most of the common complaints aside from build quality. I wonder what the world would be like if Touchwiz never existed or if samsung would give us a way to choose like Htc

We don't know if the GPE would have a functional fingerprint scanner

Btw in which way HTC let you choose ? Sense UI was worse than TouchWiz until 5.5

I would assume fingerprint scanner would work based on the fact that watchon/ ir blaster/ sview covers / gear manager and some other touchwiz specific items work on the gs4 Ge.
The main items missing on the 4 are the airview gestures and the Samsung camera app
On HTC one you can s-off and do a full conversion to gpe with ota updates and the whole schabang. Only ported roms are possible on gs4 and likely same with 5.

Very cool, definitely would be nice to have. For me that's better than fingerprint scanner.

Yeah...for me fingerprint scanners are overrated. I never used it on my IP5s nor will i use it on my S5 but then that is just me.....

MKBHD's review is out!

Looks like the water proof seal inside the back cover doesn't extend to include the speaker. How does that work, wouldn't water get in through the speaker?

Can you just test the fingerprint scanner and see if you can do that and have access to your lock screen widgets?

I never used the fingerprint scanner. So i set up just to show you. But it did not let me have access to the widgets....but it did let me have access to the camera shortcut on my lock screen......sorry hope that helped....

Doubt I would use it when it arrives on the note 4 then either.. I like my lockscreen widgets too much.

Hmm wonder why. Wonder if it's same as how exchange disables lock screen widgets...probably.

You can hack that issue away with a modded exchange apk, which has it's own risks. Wonder if the same can be done with fingerprint scanner, I'm sure it somehow ties to Knox , will be interesting to see how it pans out , but that is unfortunate.

Not even close to being true with the S5 and Note 3. Everything prior sure, but the auto-brightness jolt in bright sunless is pretty impressive and gives up little to my iPhone 5S.

Anyone "struggling" needs to get their eyes checked.

LOL, ok... Guess this is subjective and we'll agree to disagree here. To me it still has to be tilted just right and brightness turned way up in order to view the screen the way I want to see it. Maybe your standards for a display are different.

If you're turning the brightness manually up you fail and don't know how to use recent Samsung devices. Manual brightness control limits peak brightness by design to preserve the AMOLED element and extend battery life.

Auto brightness will boost brightness beyond what manual control can reach in sunlight. Displaymate has peak S5 auto brightness measured well beyond 90% of the LCD displays sold in mobile phones.

Sounds like user error.

yeah, I'm sure I probably used the SIII, S4 and now the S5 incorrectly.

HTC v Samsung bickering people....

Please stop bickering folks .... it makes these threads torturous to read and looks bad for anyone looking into this thread section.

It's all very a juvenile pissing match ... Folks show each other respect, if you want your thoughts and opinions respected, then you have to respect someone who may have a contrary opinion.

Just because someone feels differently about a device doesn't invalidate your own feelings or thoughts people, its just a subjective difference.

So please I can't believe I have to ask this - but can we put an end to the back and forth tit for tat squabbling because to be honest it's making you all seem like juvenile delinquents.

Samsung's seriously screwed up the lock screen widgets with Touchwiz. Why can't I have lockscreen widgets with a security mode? I loved my lockscreen widgets too, before I got a Samsung.
