Well, at least it's not a claw penis.

I imagine that people will still buy your iPad once they figure out that it's a quote from Steve Jobs' Stanford commencement address. It's hard to imagine why not, because at the end of the day it still has the same guts as any other iPad 3.

Anytime within your first year, take it to your local Genius Bar saying it keeps powering off.

They will swap it for a non-engraved one on the spot. Remember its a refurb though, so just do it when you're towards the end of your warranty (that's when you'll be looking to sell it anyway).

You know what affects the resale value even more? If you open the box, try to keep the shrink-wrap as mint as possible, you know what they say: you can't baby your iPad enough!

OR use it, enjoy it and own it. People get so obsessed with resale value, and of course it saves you money but in the end, not buying do much stuff saves you a lot more money!
Take care of your iPad so that it lasts you such a long time that by then it won't matter if you get 100 or 135 $ because of the engraving.

An inventive (other than the screen) in me buying it is to resell. To buy my iPad 3 at less than 50% what I paid last year makes a lot of sense, and pays off....

That's actually a good idea. Not quite honest, but the simplest solution so far.

I do like it but I'm more likely to cancel and queue...

EDIT - will cancelling the engraving if they let me, speed up delivery time?

You can sell that! People on ebay are paying large amounts for ipad 3's. You wont get as much but you can sell it and make some profit. Hell I could sell it. Its the "Limited Steve Jobs Phrase Edition" I could someone to pay a premium. I would not though because I have ethics.

Likely slow it down, as the unengraved ones are backlogged well into next month.

I am pretty sure you can still return it within the grace period even if it is engraved.

It's a little naughty, but you could always return the item
14 day window, no questions asked.

But then you'd have to wait for stock for a new one.

Guess I'll find out in 8 hours. Though I might just change the engraving to a "." at this point.

Surely that can't hurt resale value?

I did... I got:

Steve Jobs
1955-2011

I don't care about the resale value of it. The great Steve Jobs engraving on the back shouldn't hurt much.

Wow, really? I know Apple has a good return policy, even after you open it and don't want it. But what do they do with them (even the ones that aren't engraved)...? (even the ones that aren't engraved)

My friend left her iPad in the subway (stupid, I know) and I suggested for her next iPad, she should engrave it to:

[Her name]
[Address]
[Phone Number]

That way, she will always have it and if she does loses it, the person has to keep the iPad with that engraved, and no point re-selling it. She's not tech-savy, so what she buys she'll keep, she doesn't care about being "the latest trend" with technology products.

So yeah, engraving has it's pros and cons. Cons if you always want to have the latest iPad product, hard to re-sell.

Right, give a [potential] thief your address. Great idea.

If you're that stressed about it, then accept the longer wait time and cancel/return it. You can live without it a little longer.

They put a new back on the engraved ones and then go in the pile for broken under warranty replacements.

Thats the BEST engraving ever.

Thank you for that.

The engraving....

Stay Hungry.
Stay Foolish.

:(

That’s actually a pretty great engraving! I wouldn’t mind having that on my iPad actually and regret not thinking of it.
I think you need’t worry about the resale value if you ever were to sell it. Just market it as a Limited Edition iPad in the memory of Steve. Might actually earn you more if you pull it off well. :D

Question...

According to what I have read, at the time of iPad 2 sales, Apple was not allowing engraved iPads to be returned.

So, if someone like me with an engraved iPad decides I want a Verizon model instead of AT&T, I suppose I am out of luck?

Apple has changed there policy you can return your engraved items now.

This guy says he will buy it lol

That, or they just refurb it, and give it a new case.

For them to sell? Uhhh

Edit:
Wait, so when they refurbish Apple products, do they refurbish them, send it back and put it back on the floor? or do they use those for AppleCare to replace damaged products?

And my friend bought an iPad, opened it, used it for a couple of days, and after a while she decided she didn't need one. She returned it. So what does Apple do with this? "refurbish" it? There's nothing wrong with it. Just opened and used for a couple of days.
