How much did you refurb buyers save? Personally I find the idea of owning someone else's computer a bit icky. If for instance it had a slight scratch or imperfection on the case it would cause me terrible anguish. After all I buy apple stuff so I get perfection, it's not like buying something made by dell. It is stupid to feel this way, I readily acknowledge how insane my feelings are, but for less picky people I can sort of see the attraction in saving some cash. But how much did you all save?

I'm waiting on the mailman (UPS) to deliver my refurbed iMac. It is scheduled to be here tomorrow.....

It is a 27" with the i5 and 4gb ram and 1tb hd. (the current entry level 27"). List price is $1699. With the refurb discount plus education discount is was $1250 plus tax with free shipping. $450 off for a current model machine is significant for me.

Question: Should I plan on upgrading to 12 or more gb of ram, or should the 4 be adequate for now. Most of my computer use is internet use, ms office, and organizing (not editing) pictures and other media files. My current computer is a 4 year old HP laptop that was a $300 pos when new. Until it recently died it slowly did everything I asked of it. By comparison I'm thinking the 4gb will be more then enough?

That is quite a saving, but are not worried that the case may have dings, or scratches on it? Or do apple promise that refurbs are as perfect as new macs?

I'm getting impatient...!!! Ordered my base 27" i5 on Wed the 23rd. FedEx says delivery is scheduled from Friday (coming from Sacramento not China..).... Frustrating to wait while staring at my 13" MBP screen..

Apple's reputation is the refurbed are as good or better then new. I've read here at MacRumors that they are all rebuilt in CA, instead of new which is assembled in China. Anyway, this is all new to me so I'll let you know when I get it.

Also, Very minor cosmetic damage won't matter to me; I know me or one of my kids would end up scuffing it with use anyway..... If it has significant scratches or dents I'll send it back to them.

I concur (I think). Besides 3 new iMacs and a 3TB Time Capsule, I purchased a refurb Mac Pro and a refurb 27" Cinema Display from Apple. Mine are being shipped from out East. Originating UPS hub is in Harrisburg, PA. You sure about being rebuilt in CA?

It arrived today - I'm on it now. It is in perfect condition without a scratch on it.

I was checking the Apple store for the 27i and with upgrades it says upto 5-7 weeks for delivery. (UK store)

Is that normal? Was hoping for delivery before Christmas if ordered in the next few days. :(

You can do that? I'm not seeing a combined discount...

I called apple support with a few questions about switching from windows to Mac and also questions about a system in the refurb store.

The very helpful person I talked to suggested that I look at the "education store" instead of the refurbed. I pointed out that the refurb still looked like a better price. She asked me to hold and then came back and said she could give me both discounts. I completed the order over the phone.

Got my 27" Imac yesterday. I have mixed feelings so far. I thought the screen would actually be better than it appears. I've watched a few HD movies and shows on it and I'm not overwhelmed. It's okay. Definitely slower than I thought but I think the extra 8GB I ordered via crucial should definitely help on that front. I'm kinda of waffling as to whether or not I need this much screen estate. I'm going to give it a few more days and see.

Now that it's here I'm waffling as to whether or not I should send it back and get the i7 21.5"???? Any thoughts?

I don't think it is the screen that should be blamed, it is the HD content. The 27" LED screen is an even higher resolution than 1080p HD content so movies won't look as crisp if you have maximize the window.

I'm not sure I understand. Some of these movies are either 720p or 1080p and I'm running them in full screen mode. Can you explain more? Thanks.

Your are going to get 720 or 1080 resolution and that's it. That's the standard for HD content. Your iMac has a much higher resolution capability but it's no better at displaying HD content than a LED TV. It's basically a 27 inch TV display.

Just ordered my 27" iMac with 256 GB SS Drive + 1TB ATA drive, 4 GB ram, and magic trackpad. :D:D:D:D:D

As much as would've liked to hold out for a new release, my macbook pro is shot. Can't wait to finally ahve an SS drive

Ordered 2 for myself and my wife. Can't wait! Should arrive Tuesday. Though we are waiting until Christmas to open them up. They are a "present" from my 8 year old son. :)
Definitely will test my patience...

:apple: 3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB GDDR5
Apple Magic Mouse
Apple Wireless Keyboard

Both were refurbs. I wanted the Magic Trackpad, but think I might get that from someone for my B-Day or Christmas.

Refurb price was $440 off each compared to the regular with a little magic. :D

21.5 2.7QC 1TB TB 6770 4GB RAM (8GB from OWC on its way to supplement).

Can't wait to open this up at Christmas and see if I was sent a model with an SSD unintentionally.... ;) (as if they would let a $600 upgrade like that slide through....)

Just returned the 27" i5 and ordered the 21.5 i7... :) Shipping for the 2TB hard drives is down to 2-4 weeks from 5-7 a few days ago... :)

The Agony of Patience

Well the first of our two new 27" iMacs showed up tonight. Second one shows up tomorrow night. Wife is pretty firm that we are waiting to open them on Christmas. Mainly due to our Son "buying" these for us as a Christmas surprise. He got a "loan" from his granny to "buy" them for us. I actually ordered them last week, but he thinks his sister, himself and Granny bought them over the weekend for us.

I HAD to take it out of the box and compare the size with my 24". Not earth shattering but definitely noticeably bigger. :) Heavier than I was thinking it would be as well.

One thing I thought was weird, the UPS driver just left it at the door. Wife was home as I told her to get home early from work to be here, thinking it needed a signature. It didn't. He just rang the bell and booked.

So now for the longest 13 days in quite some time...

I just got my first refurb'ed i7 21.5" iMac a few days ago and realized that they threw in some extra stuff that I didn't pay for (at least according to the specs listed on the website):

1TB HDD -> 2TB HDD
4G RAM -> 8G RAM

Does Apple screw up that often with these things, or am I just lucky?

So here's a question for you... what are the specs on the box? Does it list the 2 TB drive and 8GB of RAM or are the box specs different than the actual specs?

This question is for all "upgraded" users out there. We're your upgraded specs listed on the box or was it a complete surprise?
Thanks.

Oooo, I hope I am that lucky. Guess I will find out not soon enough! :)

My Refurbished boxes didn't have anything on them in regard to specs. No picture of the iMac or words of any sort for that matter. Just a shipping box, with hard foam pieces in to support the iMac and the keyboard/mouse box. The computer is wrapped in "foam" paper.
Our old iMacs had nice white boxes with the picture of the computer on them along with the normal description. Those were placed inside of the shipping box.
