refurb vs. new

I'm still debating/researching as I look into our first mac (moving from windows). For those that have recently purchased, do think the $280 savings on a 27" basic model vs. refurb is worth it?

From what I can see the processors are basically the same (2.7ghz i5 with 6mb cache on the new vs. 2.8ghz i5 with 8bm cache on the refurb), so is the memory and the HDD. The main differences are the video card (HD6770 with 512mb on the new, HD5750 with 1gb on the refurb) and the 2 thunderbolt ports on the new vs. none on the refurb. By the way the discount narrows for me to $110 if I can't apply the education discount to the refurb like some other posters have done.

Thanks!

Just double checked the refurb store. Are you aware that you can purchase 1) either a new 2011 model 27", 2) a refurbished 2010 27" iMac (the specs you listed) OR 3) a refurbished 2011 27" model (you did not seem to list this as an option, although maybe I misunderstood your post). A brand new 27" base iMac (non- refurb) lists for $1699. A 2010 iMac refurb with the QC 2.8 and 1GB of VRAM goes for $1419 ($280 off). You can also get a 2011 27" refurb iMac for that same $1419 (same $280 savings) with only slightly slower processor (2.7 QC vs. 2.8 QC), half the VRAM (which you may never notice if not involved in *heavy* video production, etc.

You know best what you will use the computer for, but if I were in your shoes I would be going for the refurbed 2011 iMac instead of the 2010 model simply because it's more future proof with the addition of the thunderbolt ports and is largely the same in all other aspects with the exception of that VRAM that I mentioned. I didn't see you mention the 2011 iMac refurbished model in your post, I just saw you comparing a brand-new 27 inch 2011 iMac model to the refurbished 2010 iMac, that's why I threw into this discussion the 2011 refurbished iMac. Maybe you meant to mention that in your post, so I apologize if I misunderstood.

Anyway, best of luck in your decision, I'm sure you Will be thrilled with your decision either way you go, but I just wanted to give my two cents....

Oooo, I hope I am that lucky. Guess I will find out not soon enough! :)

My Refurbished boxes didn't have anything on them in regard to specs. No picture of the iMac or words of any sort for that matter. Just a shipping box, with hard foam pieces in to support the iMac and the keyboard/mouse box. The computer is wrapped in "foam" paper.
Our old iMacs had nice white boxes with the picture of the computer on them along with the normal description. Those were placed inside of the shipping box.

That's interesting. My 21.5 inch iMac showed up in a plain white boxes well, but had a small product label on one of the sides with specs, UPC code, model number, serial number, etc. Looks like Apple plays around with their shipping boxes more than they do with the iMac itself.

I still haven't opened the box to see if the specs of the computer match what was listed on the webpage (so far the box and the web match) and on the shipping box itself, but does anyone else out there have any experience with even the listed specs on the box in addition to the website being different than the computer itself? I'm trying to solve the question as to whether Apple seems to be putting the "wrong"/"upgraded" computers into the "right" boxes, or if they are grabbing the "wrong" box to fill the "right" web order.

I am now! I'm not sure why but when I first looked I didn't see the option. I'd rather have the 2011 as well. I won't be a 'heavy' video production user. Basic home movies and pictures is about it. I'll look into it some more. I wish I could get the education discount on top of the refurb price. Maybe I'll get lucky and speak to the right person when I call in tomorrow.

So here's a question for you... what are the specs on the box? Does it list the 2 TB drive and 8GB of RAM or are the box specs different than the actual specs?

This question is for all "upgraded" users out there. We're your upgraded specs listed on the box or was it a complete surprise?
Thanks.

The spec sticker on the box states:

2.8GHz i7
2 x 2G RAM
1TB Hard Drive

So I guess I was lucky then.

As mentioned previously, we have our kids thinking they bought our iMacs for us for Christmas. Well they decided to have us open up our new 27" iMacs yesterday. This way they get our older 24" iMacs and I get to rebuild their old PCs to give to our nieces for Christmas. So a Win Win Win situation.

Wow these things are so beautiful. Setup was a breeze as usual. Though I didn't time machine backup and just copying data back in place manually from the external. I wanted a more pristine install.

Got the OWC 16GB installed in mine and put my 4GB into the wife's so she has 8.
Got the kiddos setup.

Was a very busy day getting everything straight, but such a nice looking room now. 124" of screen in the room counting the TV! :D
Sweet not having towers on the floor and less network cables to worry about.

Haven't had a chance to mess with mine much, but it is definitely more responsive. Can't wait to get home today and have a chance to really play with it.

I'd go (and did go) for the 12GB as you mentioned. Leave Apple's installed 4GB in the first two slots and load your 2x 4GB sticks into the two empty slots. You can always swap out the factory installed sticks for two 4GB sticks later if you really need it, but I imagine that you will be happy with the 12GB.

you can get this ram for it.

30 dollars for 8gb ram add to the oem 4gb and 30 bucks for 12gb ram.

60 for 16gb and keep the oem ram in a box in case of a return

Damn, it was $80 for 16GB when I ordered mine last week. Oh well, it's installed now and even at $80, it was a bargain.

My 4GB goes in a box in case I need to bring the iMac back for repairs (I've done this with all my Mac's).

Just received my 27" iMac 2.7GHz i5 system, refurbished. I love this thing!!! Should get my memory today, to bring it up from 4GB to 16GB, Buy.com had crucial memory 8GB for $30.

I always buy and recommend Apple refurbished, as they still come with a 1 year warranty and can have Applecare added to them. My 2007 Macbook pro was purchased as a refurb and i never had any issues with it, along with a friend that has had a 24" iMac for almost three years.

The only downside, according to who you ask, to the refurb is that they only come in a plain white box, but all the parts come with it and they look brand spanking new.

Add in another refurb to the mix..

Our 4th Mac, 2 iPod Touches. Our latest is a 27" iMoc i7 3.4Ghz nicknamed "iBeast" which is wrapped up sitting under the tree for Christmas morning. I have an additional 8Gb RAM in hand in case it is not upgraded in any other way. Since it was a BTO to get the i7, I would be surprised is there is not something else upgraded in there. Hoping for the 2TB drive and the 2GB video card.

ETA: Other refurbs include 3 white polycarbonate MacBooks from last december, and 1 first gen iPod Touch and a 2nd Gen iPod Touch. Add in 2 iPhone 4s replace by Apple after my daughters broke a screen and an accidental shower at the pool.

Refurbs rule...

Love Apple...

I am thinking of pulling the trigger on this refurbished 27" 2011 model iMac but I am still skeptical due to the whole "yellow screen" fiasco and I imagine a lot of returned units, or messed up pixel unites would end up as refurbs or am I wrong?

To those who purchase refurbished units was yours free of the yellow screen that lots of people on here complain about? Or dead pixels etc?

Unpacked my 27" i7 3.4 Ghz iBeast today...

And it looks perfect. No Yellow, no dead pixels, but no upgrades. Oh well... Prior owner must have just ordered the processor bump.

The only thing I found interesting was that there was an iCloud populated at start-up. Just to be sure, I rebooter and entered recovery mode and re-loaded Lion. In other words, I had the droids memory flushed. It belongs to us now...

Magic Mouse and wireless keyboard already had batteries installed.

Checked the Applications and indeed iDVD and iWeb were not there. Will load them from my copy of iLife later tonight...

The thing even scored better than the published benchmarks on geekbench. Had a half dozen updates needing to be installed, including an EFI update...

More to come...

Speced as advertised with the exception of the magic mouse it came with instead of the trackpad. A quick call to Apple and they are shipping one out today.

Love this company and our new iMac. Great performance.

Expecting the base 27 2011 refurb in the morning... pretty exciting! Looking forward to reporting back on it.

Just got my iMac today =D

27 inch with the i7 processor and 1GB graphics card. =D

I'm really happy with it so far, confused myself a couple of times with the new OS but I'm managing better than I thought I would.

Congrats on your iMac, I converted in 2007 to Mac, I would recommend learning some of the keyboard shortcuts to also help make life easier.

I just ordered the exact same thing earlier this week for my 27inch 3.4 i7

How has it helped so far with performance? How noticeable is the difference in RAM?

OK, after reloading Lion, I figured out that it was not a pre-population of an older account, but just an example. Oh well..

Another interesting note, after restoring from the recovery partition, Software Update reported about double the number of updates needed than when I unboxed the iBeast.

Decided to skip Migration Assistant and set the machine up from scratch. About half way done.

Oh, the wireless keyboard is the most recent edition with the Lion icons on F3 and F4 keys.

Did my first video encode and this thing does FLY...

Now, even with the 27" screen, I am thinking of connecting my 21" Dell monitor as a second display until I can squirrel away another grand for a Thunderbolt Display.

Will pull the trigger and buy Aperture via the App Store this weekend... Will also load my daughters copy of Adobe inDesign so she can use the big screen when available.

ETA: I did install my 8Gb Ram kit I got from Amazon (Crucial Memory) so it is now 12Gb. Trying to decide if I will use the $50 Amazon Gift Card I got for Christmas to order another 8GB or order a Magic Trackpad.

Sorry, just caught this. I can't tell you as I ordered the 16GB at the same time I ordered the iMac.

I can tell you that it does make a difference with a family of 5 each logging in, launching apps, then switching to another user. The switch back is faster as it's not swapping.

If you have a single user Mac and you aren't doing serious graphics (Lightroom/Photoshop) or video editing, I'm not sure you'd see a difference.

I was shocked to get quoted sales tax in WV where they do not have a store or reseller. If they were sold tax deferred on Amazon or Ebay - I would be buying there instead.

I always have Apple ship to my work, in New Hampshire, which is tax-free ;-)

My first Mac

New guy here. Just ordered iMac 27 refurb 3.4 i7.

Delivery says Jan 10-12 but available to ship 1-3 business days, does that make sense?

My first Mac....anyway, 15 years of PC hell I hope are over. Found the "helpful information" page. Let me know how to increase my learning curve during my transition.

If you ordered today, I doubt that they are woking second shift to ship tonight from CA. That means that it will ship NET Tuesday, January 3 or as late as Thursday the 5th. With the weekend, those days make sense...
