Hi Guys

Gonna order a 27" iMac i5 2.7ghz on Friday, really looking forward to learning a new OS,been a Windows user past 13 years, last time I used a Mac was in 1989,anything I should know before ordering?

Cheers

You should probably know that the current gen iMac is getting a little long in the tooth. Depending on the urgency of your need to purchase and your philosophy on upgrade frequency, etc. you may want to try to anticipate when the new model is likely to launch. (2-3 months as a guess?)

Best of luck. We love our 21.5 so I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks very much for your replies

I would be forever waiting if i waited for the best model i could get,I will happily settle for the 2.7ghz i5,although I would be upgrading the ram till 16gb,would be fitting this myself as I hear it dosent void the warranty and am also comfortable with idea of installing ram, will have a look over the links you posted, was also wondering if the wireless built in too the iMac was like a laptop,ie the antenna round the screen, use a 15 m ethernet cable at present and was wondering how good the wireless would be?

Thanks Again for your help guys;)

Good choice! I just got mine few days ago and love it...no more PC for me :) my apple transition is now complete: iPhone, iPad, Air, ATV and now iMac :)
Maybe if you get refurb you will get some nice free upgrades like I did.

i just received my first iMac off the ups truck here at work. My first transition to Mac and probably first time using one since 8th grade (95).

Ordered the I5 3.1ghz and 8gb of ram for $1937 including $3.99 next day from amazon. I can't wait to get home n fire this bad boy up. I was planning to wait for the 2012 iMacs but some things came out and an iMac needed to be purchased.

It'll be a big transition to me. I'm big on photography and video editing. I have no idea what will happen once I transfer over all my pic as far as organization is concerned. Can't wait.

Apple CS is really the best, just got a credit back to my account after trying to exchange my mouse for trackpad.

So all in all this is what I got at no charge (for my 3.4 27"):

8GB RAM instead of 4GB ordered
2GB video card instead of 1GB ordered
$100 back so I can buy trackpad and I got to keep mouse

I think thats great service don't you?

How did you manage that?

The RAM and video just came like that. It's a refurb, I guess they just ship what ever specs they have even if higher than what ordered. I think others here had same thing happen. It's just by chance it seems. The mouse thing I called them to ask if I could exchange and they actually suggested the refund or that they could ship free trackpad, I decided refund so I could go buy it at store right away.

LUCKY!!! Neither one of ours was a spec higher. Though we are both very happy with them.

Though, I did luck out on other counts. I did the same thing about asking for Trackpads instead of mice. They shipped out 2 trackpads free of charge next day shipping.

I also asked to cancel my AppleCare since I could use a student discount for that. Instead they applied the difference to the iMacs. Though they applied $100 to each iMac instead of $100 total.

I cant decide if I want to buy a refurb now or wait for the refresh

I was going to wait also but who knows when new one will come out. Might be waiting long? Also I hope refresh only a bump in specs :) but the one I got should be good for few years.

That's also great CS! I didnt know students can get discount for AppleCare. Is that on site?

I just called and they refused to change anything on the order, even a trackpad. TO say the least, my experience wasn't nearly as pleasant.

I was a bit disappointed with my phone call to Apple as well. I've heard such good things. I just received my refurbished 27" 2.7 IMac and already have a magice mouse. Called to see if I could exchange it for a track pad. They said they couldn't. Was the fastest ,shortest call. After a $1500 purchase, I expected a little bit more.

Hi

Got my 27"iMac i5 2.7ghz yesterday and am loving the experience so far, although keep going to right of screen instead of left too close a window, guess this will diminish with time, find it very quick even with 4gb of ram installed,am gonna order another 2x4gb,12gb in total I will have, should think this will be plenty for what i do...:p

Well ordered my iMac on Saturday originally told delivery would be between 7 - 9th Feb, 2100hrs last night had a email that it had been shipped and expect on or Before 3rd Feb :D .

I ordered top spec apart from the ram which I shall do myself from Crucial, just adding 8GB to the 4GB already in.

• 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
• 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
• 2TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
• AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

Can't wait to get rid of a lot of PC stuff apart from keeping one PC desktop.

Ordered a very similar spec to you to replace my mid 2010 27" i7. I was told delivery between 2 Feb and 6 Feb, mine is still processing though.

Desperate for it, cos I want that SSD (my noisy HDD drives me nuts) and Thunderbolt (to hook my Promise Pegasus R4 4TB up).

Got the exact same spec (except only the 1TB HDD). Ordered it over the phone at 10pm on Friday night and it's being delivered today (with overnight delivery). So excited to see how an SSD handles and to play with a newish GPU. Right now I have a 6 year old Mac Pro with a 3870 in it, so I'm expecting a big difference.

Will be a huge advance for me as am still using a 6 year Old Compaq AMD 4000+ :D so expect to see a huge speed difference .

I didn't notice this sticky thread....

Anyway, this morning I ordered myself a 27", i5 CPU, 1TB, 4GB iMac. :)

It was a refurb from the Apple store and will be my first Apple computer (I have an iPhone 4 and an iPad, but all my computers/laptops are/have always been Windows machines.

Delivery will apparently be tomorrow or the next day...

well just got my first mac since the 512...yup its been a long road home!

Picked up an iMac 27" i7 3.4, 1tb 1gb vid, 4 gb ram from the refurb site. I have bought refurb products before and they are just as good as new but so much cheaper.

My pleasant surprise was that the machine had 8gb ram....nice!

annoying as that is they were under no obligation to do that. You can only choose your mouse on NEW models. They have know idea/dont care if you have a mouse, they state what it comes with and they ship it.

Excited!

Just ordered my 21.5" :apple: iMac 2.5ghz Quad-Core! Supposed to arrive on Thursday, pretty rapid transit time. My second mac computer purchase, I am looking forward to using Lion at home instead of at the Apple store.

I'm updating/replacing my 1st gen. Black MacBook 2.0ghz Core Duo...I'll be able to take my video editing to the next level or two especially with all that screen real estate.:)

Can't Wait...:D

Oohhhhh-I just checked on the UPS website and it is indeed out for delivery today!

01/02/2012 6:00 Out for Delivery

Let's hope they stick to that...

I wanted to order my iMac and am between two machines so I thought I'd ask to see which one you all thought was a better buy. I originally was going to go at the store and buy new so that is still an option but looking at the refurbs online at the apple.com website I am leaning that way along with apple care to protect the purchase.

I am stuck between:

  • $1,659 - 27" 3.1 Ghz Quad Core i5; 6MB on-chip shared L3 cache; MD Radeon HD 6970M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
  • $1,569 - 27" 2.93 Quad Core i7, 8MB fully shared L3 cache; ATI Radeon HD 5750 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
  • $1,449 - 21.5 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7; 6MB on-chip shared L3 cache; AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory
