Mine is being prepared for shipment now, so all is good. Like it to be here Friday, but looking at early next week prob.

Wow, that didn't take long!

I've powered up, configured iCloud, installed Chrome, sync'd my chrome data up and I'm posting this already from my iMac!

Just checked and it's showing Mac OS X version 10.7.2.

There are also 6 updates showing, which I'm installing as I type this.

What should I be doing now!?

After holding out for as long as possible neccessity dictated I got a new iMac.

27" i7 3.4 w/ 256ssd + 1tb hdd. Ordering 16gb ram from crucial ASAP.

A beast compared to my ageing 2ghz 24" white iMac (which is being retasked to web/email and iTunes duty.)

I wanted to order my iMac and am between two machines so I thought I'd ask to see which one you all thought was a better buy. I originally was going to go at the store and buy new so that is still an option but looking at the refurbs online at the apple.com website I am leaning that way along with apple care to protect the purchase.

I am stuck between:

  • $1,659 - 27" 3.1 Ghz Quad Core i5; 6MB on-chip shared L3 cache; MD Radeon HD 6970M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
  • $1,569 - 27" 2.93 Quad Core i7, 8MB fully shared L3 cache; ATI Radeon HD 5750 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
  • $1,449 - 21.5 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7; 6MB on-chip shared L3 cache; AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory

It's tough. Get the 27" definitely. As for which one, the i7 has a better processor (obviously), but the i5 has a better vid card.

Actually. Isn't that the older i7? I think it is and if I'm not wrong, the i5 is newer (2011) and actually outperforms it. If you are going to get an i7, get the 3.4GHZ one.

From these I would get the one with better video card.

I got my 27" 3.4 refurb today!! Very excited, set it up and so far I really like it. I ordered it with 4GB but came with 8GB RAM, nice little freebie. I also got the SSD since I have about 5TB via sinology NAS I thought might not need any more internal space.

One issue so far :( on the upper left corner I see some smudges (look like finger smudges inside the glass), I also have a few dust particles throughout...once the iMac is on you can't notice either of these issues but I'm really picky so going to decide if return or not...what you guys think?

Edit: I also noticed in addition to extra RAM, my graphics is listed in the system info tab as 6970M 2048MB, I ordered the 1GB graphics card, is this a different one? Not sure how to read the 2048MB part?

Ordered 8GB Samy RAM from OWC on 1/29 and received it today in CA...fast service! My new iMac now has 16GB RAM, running great...haven't noticed anything different but haven't run it loaded yet but can't go wrong for 8GB under $60 shipped. Now I just need a new multi bay exclosure for my drives...I got a synology NAS but not working out for me...any recommendations for 3.5 enclosure? Would like something with at least 4 -5 bays, ability to set each drive independent, I think thats called multiplier..not sure just want to be able to see each drive as a independent stand alone drive. Thanks all for all the help so far...glad I moved over to Mac!

Oh also, is there utility or program that can "test" memory, hard drive etc to see its performance?

Looks like I won't be going anywhere today :D

Well it's here on my desk, but not switched on yet as is very cold and wondered if I can bear to leave it to warm up

I just snatched 2011 iMac (open box) on Amazon Warehouse shipped next day air for $1649 w/ Prime.

It comes with retail box, 1yr warranty and 30 day return period if I don't like it. I figured I would jump on the deal and if I don't like it, then return it. If I like the refresh better, I'm sure I can sell this for $1500-$1600 and get the refresh.

Specs are:

27-inch
3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
2560 x 1440 resolution
4GB (two 2GB) memory
1TB hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1GB

RETAIL PRICE (after taxes): $2,135.93
REFURB PRICE (after taxes): $1,772.64.

I also have 16GB RAM and a OCZ Vertex 3 120GB Max IOPS SSD I will add to it with the new Seagate GoFlex TB Adapter and TB Cable for an additional $149ish.

Just got my quad core 21.5 inch i5 yesterday.

Of course, it had Lion on it, which I despise, so I called support and ordered a copy of the Snow Leopard install disks for this system (it originally shipped with 10.6.6 back in may 2011).

The SL disks only put me out $17 bucks... so that's good too.

You like SL better than Lion?

You bet. Believe it or not, there's actually a few of us who find autosave and the nagging 'restore windows' on startup button on shutdown, among other things, intrusive. Not to mention all the added (and useless, IMO) eye candy and other things that make our macs feel less like a computer and more like a giant ipad.

I love the clean, simplicity and solidity of snow leopard, thank you very much.

In fact, of those on this site who answered the poll, a whole 1/3 of Lion users went BACK to Snow Leopard. That's not even counting those who never even did the upgrade in the first place:

Mine is on its way

I ordered my Imac on the 1st and should be getting it by the 8th. I purchased the 27 inch 3.4 quad core i7. 4 GB ram which I purchased 16 GB from OWC, 2tb hard drive with the 256 ssd and teh amd 6970 2gb.

I cant wait to kick the tires and light the fires.

Got my 21" iMac about ten days ago. After many, many years on Windows PC's I finally made the switch. My biggest concern was Quicken but found that Quicken Essentials for Mac does what I need it to do better than Quicken for Windows.

Now have gone entirely Apple. iPods, iPhones (3 - mine, wife's and grandson), Apple TV, wife's Macbook Air and an Ipad2. Drank the Kool-aid and I like it.

That uncomfortable delay between

ordering it from Apple.com to the time you finally recieve it. Thats me right now. I have the desk all set up just waiting for the crown jewel. Wednesday cant come fast enough. I have checked the FedEx tracking about 10 times this morning hoping to see an update from when it was last updated on Friday. No instead it just shows it's departed in Sarcramento. Sigh, I hate waiting. I should have spent the fast shipping but my practical side said you can wait that extra day won over. In reality I probably should have went with the fast shipping. Sigh....

Refurb 21.5" iMac on the way.

My wife and I are getting rid of our MacBook Pros which we have backed up to Time Machine.

Using the Migration Assistant, can I set up two profiles and essentially re-import our data from the TM to mirror our old MBPs data?

I decided not to wait

Some good news at work today, so I thought what the hell go for it.

Travelled after work to the nearest apple store that stayed open to 9pm, walked up to the nearest kid in a blue tee shirt and said I need some help getting an iMac. He wandered off to find someone to sort me out and the now girl kid in a blue tee shirt said "So you are thinking of buying an iMac". I said "no I am buying one now". She asked what I was going to use it for, I said "No I am not telling you that I just want to buy one". Eventually I was able to get her off whatever script they work to and hurry the purchase along.

I went for the 27" base model, got it home, spend 5 minutes setting it up - only issue being I had to reboot my router. It is now downloading system updates.

I swapped the mouse for the trackpad, and I am so happy.

I was a tad worried about the glossy screen, but need not have been. With one 100 watt bulb in the centre of my ceiling there is no annoying reflections. And the screen is so vibrant.

I shall sort out a RAM upgrade soon, and begin the long task of moving my windows world to my new mac work.

The PC won't go completely there are still some uses I have for it.

And I can stop endless reading threads about the date of the 2012 refresh I don't care anymore.

I will buy apple care since this is an all in one - but will leave it till closer to the end of the guarantee.

Also my endless mini v iMac questions stop. In the end I concluded that the mini is just poor value for money relative to the iMac.

Wish me luck ......

Good luck, And enjoy. What made you quit waiting? if you don't mind me asking???

I decided:

1) The upgrade is week/months away not days away.
2) I have projects I want to make progress on sooner rather than later.
3) What I loose if an upgrade happens sooner than I expect is offset but the value of the use I am making of a Mac now.
4) I have a hunch that the upgrades will not be revolutionary.
5) Mac used prices are so high that I could sell this in 6 months time and buy a new 2012 iMac if I really wanted it.
6) Buying you first Mac is a bit like buying your first house. You should not sit around waiting for the market - you are better of getting into the market as soon as you are able.

Congrats on your purchase! How easy was it for the Apple Store to swap the Magic Mouse to the Trackpad for you?

You are spot on, besides the Sandy Bridge iMac is still a Big boy machine with great power compared to the previous iMac's. You will enjoy it. To be honest I agree with everything you said above.

Very easy. I asked and then said that was fine. Unfortunately they opened to box and removed the mouse! I was hoping to get both - but sadly not.

I was also pleased that they offered to wrap in black plastic to minimise the chance of being mugged on my way back to the car park!

Jus picked up a base 27inch for $1200 yesterday. Screen is huge! Cant wait to use this. I order a 256 samsung 830 and 16gb of ram to install...Should be here by weekend..can't wait so i can play with this.
