I am dying for a new iMac 27 top end model. I am specifically getting it for converting 1080 p movies to m4v. Ill be stepping up from a late 2008 Mac 13 unibody c2d. Needless to say it will be a HUGE jump up.

I just want the new model with sandy bridge especially after seeing the benchmarks on the new MBPs. Insane!

Please tell me the new iMacs come out in the next two weeks!

They will come out in the next two weeks.

But seriously, no one knows. Definitely the next few months though.

Ordered my 27 inch i5 and right now it is in Newark, with an estimated delivery date of the 5th, I live on long island they must be walking here, going through Newark with that big box could be kinda scary

does this make sense to anyone?

My computer arrived in Newark, then was at the newark sort facilty, left the newark sort facility and went to Sacramento. why is my Computer criss crossing the US?

Well perhaps at tomorrows ipad event they will have more to announce. Well at least I can dream! Definately want a i7 sandy bridge as well as Radeon 6950 or better.

Amen to that!

I do hope they also announce the new iMac.

Buying a new iMac these days is just dumb, just order a refurbished one or wait for the new model.

And them announcing such a mac is only the first step. Getting Wife approval, well, that is more challenging!

OK, I ordered a 27" i5 on the 23rd of January and received within a few days. It's only been what, a couple of weeks now, and I've noticed two things:

1) On two separate nights I heard a humming noise. Not a constant humming but one that would increase slightly then back down, then increase again, then back down again...repeatedly. I Googled and discovered this is a somewhat common phenomena, so I wasn't too worried.

and

2) Yesterday after turning on the iMac and browsing the internet for a couple of hours, watching quite a few YouTubes and what not...the screen went black. I clicked the mouse and hit a few keys on the keyboard but I could not get the screen to return. I went to my iPad and Googled and read that this too is a somewhat common phenomena and to turn it off, wait a bit, then turn it back on. I also learned that setting up a hot corner in Expose to activate the screen saver is a known workaround so I set that up in case it happens again.

OK, so here's my question: Since this machine is refurb, or even if it weren't, would you worry? Should I call Apple and report it? Do they keep notes on this kind of stuff? I have a full 1-year warranty so I'm not overly concerned but if it should be replaced I would rather it be replaced now, wouldn't I?

Any advice is appreciated. I love this machine and I'm not one of those "look for things that are wrong" people. I'm easy to please, if you will.

Thanks! :)

Just an update since my original post above on 9 Feb I haven't seen either of these issues occur again and needless to say, I did not return it. So far it's all good.

Hey guys I need your help. I'm torn apart and really dont know what to do. I am about to pull the trigger on that 21.5 3.2 Ghz i3 but am afraid this might not be future proof enough.

I have spent quite some time lurking on the 2011 imac speculation thread and my mind can't take it anymore which explains why I decided to post here. Also, everything seems to be about i5 and i7 which I can't afford to buy right now.

Therefore what it comes down to is whether or not I should wait for the refresh get a base i5 model or just go for the i3 now. I have the 21.5 3.2 Ghz i3 computer saved in my cart already but something is still holding me back.

I know, what I am going to say now is not a big help, but I have the same "problem" and I decided for my self to hold back for a while and to see if and what :apple: will launch sooner or later. I don't need a new computer right away, so I guess I just can wait and see...

My 27" i5 3.5 GHz 8 GB Ram iMac just got and also just finished installing all the updates and Office and OMG I LOVE it. and so does my little boy. ;) :D :apple:

oh geeeze, tomorrow is the last day i'm eligible for a return of my 27" i7Q 2.93 and I'm on the fence. Tthis machine has plenty of power and I'm loving it! On the other hand, I'll kick myself if a considerably more powerful imac is released within 30-60 days.

Someone just tell me what to do!! I have a laptop to get me by until a potential iMac refrsh...lol, It's sad but i've been stressing a bit.

It is a refurb so there was a savings but if the new machines are priced similarly to today's new..it will only be 180 difference with an Education discount...

help.

help.

My understanding is that you do NOT really need an imac right now therefore reasonable thinking would lead you to calmly return your desktop and wait for the refresh.

Also bear in mind that I was in your situation a couple of days ago (see my post above) but I decided to wait. After all, we all wish we had a fixed release date so we could make a judgement, however it turns out that we sometimes have to be very patient in order to fulfill our dreams

Thanks, I could use the iMac for a couple of projects I am working on but I've been using my MacBook Pro for the last year and it has been plenty good enough. The last 13 days has really shown me the potential of what I can get done on the new iMac when it comes out.

I called this morning and it's in the mail tomorrow.

My refurbish imac i7 2.8ghz dies and apple can not fix it!

I would not buy refurbished again.
Mine died after 3 months, replaced logic boards, power, still not working apple offered to replace my old i7 for a new (refurb i5(, so I am not happy and disappointing.
Many people have had problems with refurbished imacs!

Please help me pick.

I am finally switching over to Mac and need some help deciding what imac to get. I am looking at buying a refurbished imac 27-inch; 3.2GHz Intel Core i3 processor ($1,439.00), 2.66 GHz Quad-Core i5 ($1,529.00), and 2.8GHz Intel Quad-Core i5 processor ($1,699.00).

The majority of the time I am writing reports in Microsoft Word, emailing, and surfing the web (research and some personal). I typically will have up multiple programs and files up at time (current report that I am working, several past reports that I cut and paste from, photographs that I had taken during my inspections, the web, and email program)

I also work in AutoCad (a few days a month) where I draw roof plans and details. My drawings are very simple (no 3-D or rendering). When I switch to Mac I will be also be switching to TurboCad and once I switch to Mac.

I also would like to redesign and continue to update my company website. I have worked with Microsoft Expressions but will be switching to Adobe Creative Suite cs5 (Dreamweaver, photoshop, and flash). I would also like to make small instructional videos for my website. I’m not a graphic designer buy any means.

Lastly (and sorry if I am asking too much), my dell laptop is near its end (blue screen of death several times a week). I have been living with the blue screen since January. I back up every night and while I am working on a file I have it set to auto save to dropbox. I have a back-up Desktop I can use if my Dell completely crashed. Although my computer situation is extremely frustrating, I can live with this another month if I need to. Since I never have tracked the cost of Mac computers, I do not know how much the will typically drop in price when there is a refresh. If it is a few hundred dollars, I think I will wait. Would you recommend me waiting or is the price drop very little? I have been reading this forum since February. It has been extremely helpful in helping make the switch to Mac. What I nice community.

Ordering my 27" i7 next week...

My wife and I decided to completely make the switch to becoming an apple family. Also ordering my wife a white iPad 2 at the same time. What got us hooked was both having iPhones. I have been a pretty much a PC guy until now even though I had a Mac Plus when I was young and loved it. Can't wait till it comes. :D Run Final Cut, Adobe Master Collection and Logic Studio, so will need the power. Decided not to go refurb due to the problems I'm seeing on here and want to not have to deal with that as much as possible even though I know even new product is not free from issues. I'm glad I read this forum so that I could make a more informed decision.

I had a refured Late 2009, with a bad DVD drive, took it to the store to have it swapped, still didn't eject discs. Sent it back to apple, and now at the house is the replacement refurb waiting to be opened. Wish me luck and hopefully this one doesn't have to go back also. It's a 27" I5 with the 512mb graphics card Late 2009.

Used 27 iMac Cheaper than 27 LCD and Mini

I just bought a 27 imac for less than the price of a mini and 27 display.

I don't understand Apple's pricing.

Its used and will be out of date soon but I don't mind too much :)

Congrats on the purchase! :) Out of date doesn't matter as long as you love it and it does what you need it to do :)

New member - 1st Post - 27" iMac = WOW!!

I've been a PC/Windows user for the past 20+ years and have decided that I'm switching over to a 27" iMac this year (when the 2011 version comes out). I played with the iMac for the first time yesterday at my local Apple store. . .in fact, it was the first time I ever used a Mac! I was completely lost and have LOTS AND LOTS of learning to do. It's gonna be quite the transition but I'm looking forward to learning.

I've been learning a little by little, mostly by coming here to "MacRumors" and just created an account for my million questions to come :D

1st question: I have all of my PC files (including over 100 gb's of music) backed up to a "seagate" external hd (NTFS). When I get my iMac, will I be able to plug in that seagate hd to the iMac and transfer all of those files over from that hd? . . . or do I need to get a new external hd thats compatible with my PC and the new iMac? In other words, do I need to back up my PC files onto a different external hd now, so I can transfer those files over to the iMac?

thanks

Glad you like it! Even after a full years' use of the 27 inch iMac, I still can't help but aw over its screen every time I use it.

Yes, its a beautiful screen. Probably one of the biggest reason to buy one. :)
