I've been a PC/Windows user for the past 20+ years and have decided that I'm switching over to a 27" iMac this year (when the 2011 version comes out). I played with the iMac for the first time yesterday at my local Apple store. . .in fact, it was the first time I ever used a Mac! I was completely lost and have LOTS AND LOTS of learning to do. It's gonna be quite the transition but I'm looking forward to learning.
I've been learning a little by little, mostly by coming here to "MacRumors" and just created an account for my million questions to come
1st question: I have all of my PC files (including over 100 gb's of music) backed up to a "seagate" external hd (NTFS). When I get my iMac, will I be able to plug in that seagate hd to the iMac and transfer all of those files over from that hd? . . . or do I need to get a new external hd thats compatible with my PC and the new iMac? In other words, do I need to back up my PC
files onto a different external hd now, so I can transfer those files over to the iMac?
thanks
Just ordered refurb base config iMac! The usual: 21.5" 3.06Ghz i3
I will upgrade RAM through newegg. $200 upgrade through apple? No thanks.
Went ahead and ordered a base 27" iMac refurb. My price limit was basically the amount I spent on the refurb and spending anymore than that wasn't something I was willing to do. Yep, I know Sandy Bridge is right around the corner but honestly it's not going to be a deal breaker when cost is the more important thing. Besides, I already had my healthy Sandy Bridge serving with my last PC build. Way too much muscle for what I do, especially when overclocked to 5GHz (see sig).
It's going to be awesome looking at the 27" display.

Just bought the imac 27 i5 just waiting for it to be delivered , a friend of mine had done the same, we are like two little boys excited to get our new toys. I have been PC person for 20 years but decided to take the plunge, lots of my friend have told me I must be mad paying all that for a mac when I could have a super pc for that price so it got on my nerves a bit. Its nice to read on this forum that people are enjoying their macs and wouldn't swap them for anything, I will be asking zillions of questions so I hope people will not get the hump when I ask seemingly basic question, it might be easy for you more experienced mac owners but me I am a newbe...the only thing I know is how to turn it on I have been looking at the info on macs and watching the get started videos so at least I will have a very basic knowledge.![]()
Congratulation on your purchase, you can laugh your winblows friends later, few years from now, when their super pc falling apart because of virus, trojan and other $#!T
PC component, no matter how fast they are, won't have good resale value in the future, even 5 years Mac computers still worth 30 - 40% price when they new, a PC will be a trash 5 years later, nobody wants them
If only you could wait a bit longer and purchase 2011 iMac refresh, you can get better value for your money, your i5 iMac is excellent, but 2011 refresh might perform better
