Just ordered the top spec i7 27" from the refurb store will be here 2morrow with any luck :D, could have waited but meh you can always wait for the next big thing and you will always be out of date within a month so whats the point

I've been a PC/Windows user for the past 20+ years and have decided that I'm switching over to a 27" iMac this year (when the 2011 version comes out). I played with the iMac for the first time yesterday at my local Apple store. . .in fact, it was the first time I ever used a Mac! I was completely lost and have LOTS AND LOTS of learning to do. It's gonna be quite the transition but I'm looking forward to learning.

I've been learning a little by little, mostly by coming here to "MacRumors" and just created an account for my million questions to come :D

1st question: I have all of my PC files (including over 100 gb's of music) backed up to a "seagate" external hd (NTFS). When I get my iMac, will I be able to plug in that seagate hd to the iMac and transfer all of those files over from that hd? . . . or do I need to get a new external hd thats compatible with my PC and the new iMac? In other words, do I need to back up my PC
files onto a different external hd now, so I can transfer those files over to the iMac?
thanks

You can read from NTFS but not write natively, for writing to NTFS you
Would need mfuse and turexa NTFS.

Terrador: Your i3

Congrats on your i3. I was going to spring for a 27" i5 quad-core, but the budget is screaming at me and I might dial back to the 21.5" i3.

My hesitation is the disappearance of the i3 in the new MBP line, which, to me, indicates that the i3 will disappear in the new (if they ever get around to it) updated iMac. That means an i3 will be obsolete that much faster. So the debate goes between i3 and quad i5. I keep telling myself, no biggie, the quad i5 will be technically obsolete since the new processors are Sandy Bridge. Agh! Where do I stop to get off this crazy merry-go-round of indecision!

I'm glad you made a decision and, please, I really would like to hear from you on the i3.

Got mine about a week ago after I got multiple video projects with compositing and After Effects that was going to be a pain on my MBP. I opted for the i5 2.8 mainly so I could upgrade ram to 16g and stay under 2K whick I did. Love this machine...the FW storage bottleneck bugged me though so I rolled my own eSata port this weekend and I must say this setup is very fast. Only 2 things left to do...one is get an SSD or pull the one out of my laptop. Another attractive upgrade will be the intel i7 870 when the price drops to around 100.00 which will happen very soon. THe eSata really rocks...205 MB/s write
and 197 MB/s read. I also chose not to tear up the case and cut the plastic frame around the Ram much cleaner and not outward scars. If you cut the internal frame just right there is plenty of room and no heat issues whatsoever. I am going to fashion a black plastic memory door and port mount when I get the time.

Hi guys,
I got my iMac 1 week ago and I'm speechless. This is my first Mac btw and for the second time I'm pleased to say that I didn't made a bad decision regarding computers(my first was with the purchasing of the Thinkpad R61 3 years ago-amazing machine). My point is I was always amazed how do people spend all that money buying a Mac,when they can purchase a very decent desktop for the half of the price spent on the iMac. Now I understand,I'm reborn again. I never thought that the iMac can be so practical, beautiful and powerful at the same time. And don't get me started on the screen....pure thing of beauty. I decided to not wait because,it's pretty much the same to me. I need it for coding, casual gaming(WoW,hopefully TOR) and when the new models(2011) eventually hit the market in my country,it will be 2012 so it's the same from my point of view. I was going to buy the new base 15" macbook pro(which btw you will have to wait for 2 months to get here after you make the order-Macedonia) and the price is 500$ on top of the current 27" iMac i3. I decided to go with the desktop because I will be re-leaved from battery headache and screen resolution. And honestly I'm happy I did this,no regrets for not waiting for the new models. Hope this one will last me for 5 years and benefit me.
Cheers! :)

Just ordered a 27" i3 refurb. Even with the lure of SB around the corner, I didn't feel like I could wait what could amount to another 30 days. Not with my 2006 MBP the only computer. I suppose the i3 will feel really fast coming from the '06 MBP, but I really wish I could have sprung for the Qi5. Oh well. I had to make a decision and I finally did. I'm excited, but cautiously optimistic as it is a refurb and I know some have experienced problems. Has anyone ever posted a checklist of noted problems to look for in the 2010 27" i3s?

Woooooooooooooooo!

Just got a purchase order for a 27" i7 signed off - can not bloody wait! I've been working on the powers that be for soooo long now! Can't risk waiting 6 weeks for the new one's - I'm ordering now!

Well, that's it then...

After lurking for weeks and getting myself in a tiswas over when to order I finally decided to just buy one!

27" i7 with 2tb drive

Got it with student discount (14%) on finance over 2 years. The discount takes care of the finance charge and the 3 year apple care was free. Result.

Don't care if there's an upgrade/refesh I've decided to be happy with what I've got.

Let the fun begin.

Went ahead and ordered a base 27" iMac refurb. My price limit was basically the amount I spent on the refurb and spending anymore than that wasn't something I was willing to do. Yep, I know Sandy Bridge is right around the corner but honestly it's not going to be a deal breaker when cost is the more important thing. Besides, I already had my healthy Sandy Bridge serving with my last PC build. Way too much muscle for what I do, especially when overclocked to 5GHz (see sig).

It's going to be awesome looking at the 27" display.

:)

If cost is the most important thing then that's why you should have waited. Sandy Bridge will drive down the cost of the one you just bought. Previous gens always drop in price in the new gens come out. And previous gen refurbs even more so.

Received my refurb 2010 27" quad core i5 w/ 5750 w/ 1GB, otherwise everything is stock.

I love Apple's free shipping. It only took 2 days to get here.

I wasn't able to get Time Machine to restore my settings. Maybe because I used wifi before and this time it's hard wired? Whatever, I'm just manually pulling over all non-apps that I need and going and downloading all the apps. It's all good.

I really wanted to wait for the refresh, but with no rumors except for what went around a few weeks ago I was skeptical one was coming soon. I really needed a new computer too. My ex stole the iMac I bought last year and left me with a 5 year old 13" MacBook.

Just bought the imac 27 i5 just waiting for it to be delivered , a friend of mine had done the same, we are like two little boys excited to get our new toys. I have been PC person for 20 years but decided to take the plunge, lots of my friend have told me I must be mad paying all that for a mac when I could have a super pc for that price so it got on my nerves a bit. Its nice to read on this forum that people are enjoying their macs and wouldn't swap them for anything, I will be asking zillions of questions so I hope people will not get the hump when I ask seemingly basic question, it might be easy for you more experienced mac owners but me I am a newbe...the only thing I know is how to turn it on I have been looking at the info on macs and watching the get started videos so at least I will have a very basic knowledge. :D:apple:

Congratulation on your purchase, you can laugh your winblows friends later, few years from now, when their super pc falling apart because of virus, trojan and other $#!T

PC component, no matter how fast they are, won't have good resale value in the future, even 5 years Mac computers still worth 30 - 40% price when they new, a PC will be a trash 5 years later, nobody wants them

If only you could wait a bit longer and purchase 2011 iMac refresh, you can get better value for your money, your i5 iMac is excellent, but 2011 refresh might perform better

Story of my life lol I am just glad to be away from all those negative comments from some people I have talked to, it was making me think I perhaps had made a mistake. I can't wait now to get it delivered so I can start looking around and learning how to use it. Happy days ( I hope):D:apple:

im so excited! :D:cool::apple:

So, this is what I just bought.

3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB (replacing with 16GB of RAM I bought elsewhere)
2TB Serial ATA Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

Apple Magic Mouse
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (English)

Apple Care

oh, and a VESA adapter.

I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Now that the refresh has happened, I am noticing that the refurbished prices have gone down considerably. It's $929 for a refurbished base model from last year.

I can't decide between the new models or the old one? I would save over 200 dollars on the refurb. But I want a computer that will last for years, and an older model might have shorter lifespan.

You guys know what you're talking about. In your experiences, would I be well selrved with the refurb?

I don't do gaming or photoshop, only web surfing, email etc.

Refurbs come with the same same warranty AND are AppleCare eligible.
If you want to spend the extra $149 (maybe cheaper on Amazon or other online sources) you can have piece of mind for 3 years.

In your case, it would be completely justifiable to buy a sub-$1k refurb

Just ordered

3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB GDDR5

Apple Magic Mouse
Apple Wireless Keyboard (British) & User's Guide (English)
Apple Battery Charger
COUNTRY KIT,K60/K62

4-6 week wait though. Maybe Lion will be on it by then.
