Just ordered this to upgrade my 2007 iMac..

27"
2.9GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
8GB 1600HHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
3TB Fusion
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 512MB GDDR5
Magic Trackpad
Apple Wireless Keyboard

:D :apple:

Finally ordered my new iMac yesterday. It will replace a 2006 20" white iMac.

27" 3.4 GHz i7
8GB
3TB Fusion Drive
680MX

Already own a trackpad, so ordered it with a Magic Mouse. Will upgrade the memory myself after it arrives...weeks and weeks from now.

Given that I only have 2GB memory in the 2006 iMac, this will be a huge difference in performance. I'm really looking forward to it!

Just set it up... 100% pleased.

Pulled the trigger yesterday on a 21.5" iMac refurb.

I flip flopped back and forth between the 2012 and the 2011 models and the 2011 just made more sense for me.

First, my kids will be using it and it makes more sense to get the model with the built-in DVD drive rather than to pay extra for it because the kids will want to watch movies on it.

Second, as far as the GPU specs go, the best information I could get showed only a modest improvement from the 6770M to the 640M. Other benchmarks I saw showed the 5400 RPM drive in the 2012 to be significantly slower than the 7200 RPM drive in the 2011. I was able to get the high-end 21.5" 2011 model with 2.8Ghz i7 for less than the entry level 2012 model.

Third, if I want to put more RAM in it at a later time, I can easily do that myself with the 2011 model. A whole 16GB of RAM will only run about $100, as opposed to $200 that apple charges for just an extra 8GB.

As many people have said, they really made a lot of sacrifices to the internals of the 2012 model to make it thinner, which is really unnecessary given that it will sit on your desk.

I hate to break it to Tim, but the DVD is not dead yet. We do have a few movies purchased on iTunes, but the vast majority of our movies are on DVD.

We also like to have the ability to backup our pictures and home videos to DVD where we know they will be safe from accidental erasure or from a hard drive crash.

The amazing part to me is that I placed the order yesterday and it had originally been quoted as delivering Dec 28 - 31. I worded my gift message accordingly. Then it was estimated to be delivered on Dec. 27. Now, FedEx is estimating Dec 24. All indications are that it is on schedule. Now my gift message will be inaccurate!

This morning it was already on the move again from Memphis. I bet it will be in a distribution center in Ontario by the end of today. Sweet!

As I have been watching the refurbs for months now and doing my research, it occurred to me that many people must be unhappy with the 2012 models. The refurbs would come and go within hours. I was at one time about to pull the trigger on one a week ago, but in the few seconds that I hesitated to push the button, it was snapped up.

I would call that a big indicator to Apple that they missed the mark when last year's models are flying out of the store at that rate.

Here's a great article at Ars Technica that basically calls them out on it.
Review: 21.5-inch 2012 iMac takes two steps forward, one step back

Anyhow, cheers all!

I like that desk. Where did u get it?

I got it at Ethan Allen. It cost about $2k for the desk and $500 for the chair. It was probably overpriced but I loved it. It is covered in leather and appears to be hand stitched.

I don't understand the pricing and ssd options for the iMac .. The only all ssd option is £1000+ for 768gb ? Why can't I get 256 gb option .. Thinking of Mac mini instead

I got lucky!

Well, I finally ordered my first ever iMac (first Mac really) on Dec 14 with a January delivery date. Once I realized stores might have them in stock, I started calling all the ones within 150 mile range daily, and I lucked out at one store that has consistently had a few in every day, although they're snatched up early. Today, though, it was my turn! Called first thing, hopped in the car and drove up (was just over 100 miles) and got my 27" iMac with the i7, 1 tb fusion, 680 card - exactly what I had spec'd! I'm just so excited - now I'm tidying up my windows files (gawd, what a mess they are) and then going to do the whole migration bit.

Just in time for these two long holiday weekends :)

Congrats on the wise decision!! As you already found out Mac is a joy to use.
It cracks my up that the Windows diehard always say Mac is more expensive which is not entirely true, one only need to look at some of those "Higher Ends" Windows PC from Sony or Dell, (Is there even such a thing as High End Windows PC? Perhaps there is also "High End" Yugo? Anyhow, even if it is a bit more expensive, in long run a Mac save you a trip to Hair Club for Men, save you a lot of money for sure. :D

I'm entranced by what a difference setting up this machine was compared to my past windows PCs, which is a huge plus for me (only a power cord and Ethernet - amazing!) iMacs are pricey, but right now the 27" iMac is about as powerful an AIO as you get, and in a beautiful package. Dell's AIO is right up there in price for a less powerful machine. I'm loving this.

27" iMac arrived in AUST

Hi,
i got a call fr Myers.. going to pick up my 27" BTO iMac now.
can't wait...

keep u guys posted.

cheers

Got my two new iMacs today! Both the same:

i7 3.4Ghz, 8GB RAM (upgraded to 32GB via OWC), 1TB Fusion, 680MX 2GB.

Love them. They're not for me, specifically. They are for my 2 designers/developers. I'm still powering away on a 2009 8 core mac pro which still is a beast. But I have to say the 27" display in these iMacs is very very sexy.

Currently downloading RAGE to give it a test in terms of gaming/graphics.

Just got my new i7 3.4Ghz, 32GB (via OWC), 3TB Fusion, 680MX 2GB and External OWC Helios w/ 512GB SSD, today.

Spent the day setting her up, installing programs and testing it out. I have to say I've delayed adding an iMac to my collection of machines for far to long. Now to decide on if I will be adding Win7/8 to her or building a more custom PC. Then again the new Mac Pro's will be out this year... hmmm

Here she is next to my old PC workhorse.

Sweet!

Is your external SSD connected thru USB 3 or Thunderbolt? Could you show us some disk speed test results?

Even though the SSD of the Fusion drive iMac is fast, I'm thinking about getting an external Thunderbolt SSD boot drive for even faster performance. Something like the LaCie's Little Big Disk (R/W 700/400 MB/s while Fusion drive about 400/300 MB/s).

My SSD is connected via Thunderbolt (its a single OCZ Vector SSD in a Helios enclosure). The Drobo unit is connected to my PC via Firewire 800, haven't given thoughts yet to an upgrade to my in-house backup solutions as of yet. Here are the benchmarks on the SSD:

Man, those are some nice results :) The read speed has obviously maxed out the speed gauge. I think you can get one with a higher maximum. Probably your read speed can hit something like 600 MB/s...

Out with the old, in with the incoming ...

Ordered a 27" / i5 / 680MX / 3TB Fusion / trackpad on December 13 from PowerM*x ... due "January". Lots of extra goodies on order to go with it.

This will finally replace my 2004 iMac G5 (PowerPC). Yes, the machine that provides the "1000" reference point on Geekbench. So the new machine should have 12-15 times more throughput. I expect to notice some differences.

It's been an odyssey with the old machine ... manually removed and soldered in new capacitors 3 years ago to replace ones going bad on the Revision A logic board.

Then Ethernet died for some reason so it's been running off USB-Ethernet just fine for a couple years.

Then bluetooth died for some reason, so its been running off USB dongle bluetooth just fine.

Still has the original 250 GB internal hard disk, now 8.5 years old. THAT just won't die, though the last 15 GB of free internal disk space keeps getting written/erased, written/erased for the last couple years.

Use the latest machines at work and have never been moved to upgrade before since, performance-wise, it's really not that bad. But I live in the terminal.
