I have been eying the Apple refurb store for the past year! Finally made a move when the late 2012 iMac 27 inch went up for sale in the refurb store last week. I have the "base" model 27 inch, but have in the mail another 8 gig of ram (purchased via third party supplier), which will bring me to 16 gig. Good for my photography and multitasking needs. I also grabbed a LeCie 3TB Porsche Design (P'9233) external HD on sale for $150, which I might add, looks pretty slick on my desk next to the iMac!

I am on a bit of a limited budget, but after having the system arrive (and loving it), I am having a bit of regret. I am thinking I should have shelled out the extra cash for a Fusion drive, and possibly a video card upgrade (there were a few more powerful versions of my system in the refurb store when I got this one). I got so excited about seeing the new 27 inch, I just jumped on it without thinking it through. I find if you think too much about a refurb, it will usually disappear. :) I have always built my own Windows based systems from scratch, and not having the ability to open this thing up is already bothering me! I really wish I could pop in an upgraded video card to enhance gaming, and the Fusion drive would have been a sweet addition. I will likely wait a year or so, and try to pick up a 1 TB SSD, and hook it up via Thunderbolt....or once the warranty has expired, I may attempt to crack this thing open myself, and add an internal SSD. I thought about returning and exchanging for an upgrade, but I don't want to go through the hassle of doing so now (unless they would allow me to return to local Apple store), so I'll likely keep it as is. Not that this is a bad thing, it's a sweet sweet machine....I just have Fusion / Video envy, and hankering to take a look at the guts of this system. My inner computer nerd is....well, no longer in hiding. :)

I had a high end 27, now have a base 27 refurb... For what I use it for, the base will suffice for me. I go back and forth what's really worth it as far as the hard drive, video card etc...So just using this base 27, so far it's proved to be just fine for what I would use it for. Web surf, email, look through photos/vids, light gaming. Would a 675mx be much better than the 660m, I don't really know. I understand about the CUDA cores, video ram and all that, but my experience with the computer is 95% looking at web pages. For $1529, you can't get a mini and thunderbolt display for that, and you get a video card.

I still have time to return it...Still thinking about waiting for Haswell Macbook Pro, but I have an Air from work and my own iPad and Touch for other uses. Do like the retina screen, but having this 27" screen is pretty cool. Still thinking about it...

BTW...returning is easy. They'll just have a USPS label for you to put on the box and just bring it to the post office if you want to return it.

Oh, and I'm thinking about external SSD or open it up and install a 512 ssd. I would like to tackle opening it up and installing the drive. Was tough not building my own this round...

Finally took the plunge and retired my poor old MacBook and got a 21" iMac. Not gonna lie, you've gotta love the the jealous looks you get when carrying one of the boxes through shopping centre.

I'm in love! Plus got a sweet student deal!

I created this chart to guide my decisions on options for the 2012 iMac. This says the Fusion Drive and GPU give you the most bangs for the buck.

I have been using a Mac Pro 1,1 since... whenever they were first released, 2006? Lately it's been feeling like its time to upgrade it a little and add an Ultrasharp monitor for my photography. However now that new OSX releases aren't being officially offered for my machine, I'm kind of weary of spending money on it. There are some other pieces of software I use that are also becoming unsupported.

So after much deliberation, I ordered :

3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2X4GB
1TB Fusion Drive
NVIDIAGeFrc GTX 680MX 2G GDDR5
MAGIC TRACKPAD

I will mainly use it for Lightrooom and Photoshop. And I am planning to keep the Mac Pro running as a media server, iTunes library, and computer I sync my idevices to. It's still a beast but I am excited to pick up my new imac on 4/30!

just ordered a refurb!

Apple put up a bunch of new 27' refurbs today and I was finally able to snag one of the 27" base models with the 1 TB fusion drive upgrade. Now I'm off to spend some of my refurb savings on some extra RAM for it...

My new iMac will replace one of the original aluminum 20" iMacs (my first Mac), purchased almost immediately after release. It should be an enormous upgrade, and I'm very excited!

Great stuff, what deal did you get? The most recent student iMac deals seem to have been reduced to £98?

I'm going to order a BTO 27" iMac in a few weeks. I plan to have it shipped to store... wondering what recent experiences are like with estimated shipping times vs. actual delivery dates.

Is it taking the full estimated time right now for delivery?

I am waiting on my 2nd refurb, but this time I decided that 21.5 model is more appropiate for my needs. My first refurb (27, i7, 1tb fusion 680mx) had a yellow tint problem at 1/3 of the bottom screen.
This time around, I am waiting on i5, 16gb, 1tb fusion 650m. I am really hoping that this time around the machine will be perfect in and out.

My 1st refurb arrived exactly on the quoted day. My 2nd refurb looks like will be aheard few days vs. quoted delivery time.

I order my BTO 27 on the 18th for store pickup. Was quoted the 30th. Notified it was ready for pickup on the 23rd.

Lol, desk hasn't even arrived yet! It's sitting on a makeshift table.

Got a I5 3.2 with the 680MX and upgraded it to 16 GB RAM Also has the 1TB Fusion Drive.

Tom

PS ordered it 2 mondays ago took a week to make and a week to get here.
Had it shipped to the store.

I assume you're located in the United States - how come it takes so long to get products to the US? I'm in New Zealand and my custom iMac was ordered and delivered in under a week including the weekend - is there something that limits the ability to turn around and fly things directly from China to the United States?

I hope that's the same for me. I'm ready to get this ordered and set up. I need to stop obsessing ;)

Bought the 3.4GHz i7, 1TB Fusion Drive & NVidia GTX680MX today.

So far no complaints. I think the Mouse that came with the machine is defective... the right side of it doesn't seem to be responsive, and scrolling is a challenge. Not a big deal as I synced up my trackpad.

Coming from a 2008 Core 2 Duo, this thing is an absolute monster so far. Churning through iPhoto & iMovie imports like nothing.

So far, very pleased. Not looking for dead pixels, excess noise, or any of the other things that have been reported on this forum. If i come across it in daily use than it is definitely a problem. Not gonna go looking for them!

Couldn't be happier with the purchase!! :apple: :)

I'm on a 2008 Core 2 Duo as well (low-end MBP). It's really struggling to keep up with me. Opening Safari is laggy. Trying to run Safari with anything else open is a challenge.

6 days ago (April 23) I ordered the BTO 21.5 with the i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB Fusion drive, and Magic Trackpad. Delivers April 29 - May 1. It still isn't marked as shipped, so I doubt it will arrive today. Though it should ship by today, as it's the 4th business day excluding the day I ordered it (available to ship 2-4 business days). Guess it'll likely arrive on May 1.

Too bad I work the night of May 1st... Would love to stay at home and play with my new iMac instead :D Ah well, at least I have the next night off :)

I just bit the bullet and bought my new iMac 27".

The configuration i got is:

3.2 GHZ i5
8 GB RAM
1 TB
680MX
Magic Mouse

I got the computer for £1600 , brand new.

I still cant help but feel like i don't deserve such a computer :p haha.
I keep thinking i wont really use it to its full potential.

Can i really justify it?

My 21.5" BTO iMac is finally marked as shipped. Ordered on April 23. Said ships 2-4 days. It shipped April 29th (4th business day after the order date) from California. Before it shipped, the ETA was April 29 - May 1. But on my shipment notification email, it says "Arrives May 2."

Really hoping it arrives on May 1, like they originally said, but no huge deal if it's late a day.

EDIT: The FedEx tracking number has been updated with an ETA: May 1 by Noon. So close, yet so far! :p

I feel the same way :p I highly doubt I'll be able to use mine to it's full potential. But the last time I bought a Mac (5 years ago) I didn't invest as much as I should've into it, and really became sluggish the past 2 years. So I'm hoping the near-fully loaded 21.5 will be the opposite :)

Just placed my order on a refurbished late 2012 27" (base model). This will be my 2nd time converting back to Apple.

Been a member here for almost 3 years and i've seen a lot of posts that have both helped and inspired me in my decision.

I'm seconds away from buying the 27" basemodel without any upgrades.

I've had an iMac before, the 27" mid 2010 with the i7, which I sold when I started studying a year later and got a macbook pro 13" instead. A decision I regret sometimes.. Sure the macbook was useful for lectures and stuff, but I just miss that beautiful 27" screen :p

Now that i've finished studying, i'm seriously considering this one after using it at our local retailers. Then I wonder if I really want it?

The answer was a big yes.

I don't really need the extra performance which is why I didn't add fusiondrive or went for the higherend-model with better graphics.

"But if your iMac is going to be mainly for Internet, email, and a few games, the difference probably won't be noticeable — a second or two here and there." I Read this from an article which I felt was aimed at me :p

I'll probably buy some more ram later on, but for now.. i'm finally welcoming (soon, 2-3 businessdays) my new iMac 27"!!!!

(How appropriate that I bought an 1tb external hdd with usb3 a few days ago..)

ps. sorry for my sometimes bad english...

Just ordered a late 2012 27" base model refurb. It'll be a replacement for my 2009 MBP that's been pulling desktop duty for the past couple of years. I've found less and less of a need for a laptop since I've gotten an iPad. The huge screen and lack of wires everywhere will be a much welcome change. I wont miss the portability since I've got an iPad and a 2012 MBP through work. I'm not sure if I'll miss the optical drive or not, but I could always get the external one. Hopefully with the refurb I'll avoid some of the more common problems since they've all been "quality tested."

Got mine ordered

27" 3.2Ghz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2X4GB
3 TB Fusion Drive
NVIDIAGeFrc GTC 680MX 2G GDDR5
Magic Trackpad (already have a Magic Mouse)
Apple Wired keyboard (already have a wireless keyboard)
Country Kit (whatever that is, didn't cost anything additional)
Apple Care
Ships 2-4 days and supposed to arrive May 14-16. Can't wait.

I don't post often, been using this site for research and occasionally living through you guys and your excitement as you purchase new Mac products.

Well, today I can say I am joining you. I just placed my order for the higher spec 27" machine. Didn't choose any upgrades and I know that I can handle the memory when I want to do it.

I've been spending the past week getting everything on my PC transferred and organized on my Synology NAS.

I'm super excited!! Really hope it arrives before the weekend.

So I had to cancel the order. They threw up a ton of different refurbs today and one caught my eye. Quickly called and had my order changed, that simple!

Same system except for $120 more I ended up with a 1TB Fusion drive and 16GB of RAM. The RAM wasn't a big deal, the drive alone was worth it compared to a newly configured one with a Fusion drive would cost more than I paid.

I hope I get to experience the same refurb process I've been reading about on here for over a year; a high quality and seemingly new machine.

Just got it and did all the wonderful unboxing and..

oooohhh mmmyyyyy goooodddd I forgot how beautiful the screen is haha. Especially now with this new model. I had the model from 2010 before and thought THAT was beautiful.

But now.. oh me oh my.

I'm almost out of words.
