I just ordered it:

The only problem is that the delivery date is 27 FEB 2009!!!

Damn, when I first glanced at your image the baht sign looked like a dollar sign. I was thinking, that's one expensive setup! But even after conversion that works out to over $30,000 USD.

you have to be kidding.

So if you don't get the house you will piss away 3k on a computer that could put you closer to getting you a house?

and people wonder why so many people have money problems.

when it came to getting my first house everything was cut that wasn't required. This meant the primo cell plan, the over channeled cable setup, and such. A house is worth more that crap that won't last but a few years, then again we can see the sensibility of people by looking at the cars at apartment complexes.

It's not a matter of not having the money it's the timing and whether or not we want to do it this year with the wedding. If we decide to do it then I will instead want to spend my money on new things for the house and upgrades and probably not a computer. If we don't get a home and wait until next year then I have money to burn and I'm due for an upgrade even though I don't "need" one. I'm on the computer at least 16 hours a day(solid) and to me it's worth upgrading from my tiny white macbook.

The reason I started iPhone development was purely to get the new 17" macbook* and with the revenue from that last month alone I could purchase about six new macbook pro's so I'm not worried about the money part. ;)

We're sitting down tonight to go over everything...if we decide to wait then the Pro will be on order a few minutes later. The odd part is I want to push it and get the house which means no macbook...she wants to wait which would mean I would get it. It should be the other way....

*She wouldn't let me waste $3000 on a laptop so she got me a objective-c programming book and told me to earn it. :D I'm glad she did...

Picked up a 2.93Ghz Glossy model with 4GB and a 320 7200RPM HDD. Have the 8GB Kit on the way and a 500GB 7200RPM on the way as well...Gotta love an old-school employee discount!!!
May I ask who makes the 500GB @ 7,200rpm?

That's wicked, congrats.

I'm debating on whether to get the 17" or the 15", just curious why did you get the 2.9GHz processor over the 2.6GHz? I can't justify myself to pay £210 ($317) for a 0.03GHz bump.

The funny thing is that I'm hoping to sell this laptop by mid-year. Hopefully by then there will be some kind of update of the Quad core variety in the 17" form factor :D When trying to sell, these types of upgraded features help command a higher premium. It's also a mental safety net for me. Even if I decide to keep it I can rest easy knowing that I got this baby pretty much maxed out. It's very American of me ...... I know! If I were in the UK I would probably be opposed to it given the Apple pricing structure there. I have a flat in Clapham, but the dollar/pound conversion has kept me stateside!

Ok cool, fair enough thanks for the reply.
lol that's cool I lie near Clapham! I can't believe this time last year £1 was $2!

by the way why did you get the 17" instead of the 15"? what moved you towards it? was it the battery life?

to the person with a good macbook getting married, keep your macbook a while.

If you want a bigger display to use at home, buy the 23-inch new display, keyboard and mouse.

I've been a 17" owner for years starting with the Powerbook and then migrating to 1st generation MBP. I've always valued the real estate vs. the portability. Even when I travel for business I always pack my Dell (work laptop) in my luggage and carry-on my MBP. I had a 23" cinema display that I would use with my original MBP, but grew tired of having to sit at a desk. For my lifestyle the 17" just makes more sense. The battery life on the new MBP is just a bonus.

cool, makes sense to me.

last question... why did you get the glossy screen? is it because of the more vibrant colours and better gamut?

I got the glossy because my days as an aspiring photographer are over. I recently sold my EOS 1Ds Mark II and went to a pro-sumer point and shoot. My outdoor laptop use is at a minimum these days. I'm also a sucker for the vivid picture you get on a glossy display in typical viewing conditions. I remember being in the Apple Store on Regent St. a few months back and thinking, "This glossy display isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be."

I'm about to order one, but I was curious if there had been any more info on the actual shipping dates. I'll be moving towards the end of January and I'm not exactly sure where I should have it shipped to :(

My 17" Powerbook finally crapped itself after 4 years of service, so I'm without a computer, therefore, the faster I can get this 17" macbook the better.

If anyone wants to know why I went with the 17" instead of the 15":

Screen Resolution. 1440x900 on the 15"?!?! Come on Apple. I'll be happy with 1920x1200.

I say 1680 x 1050 is the best compromise for the 15. Although a lot of us would like a hi-res screen, not all of us have good eye sight. :)

WOOOW!! Your shipping date is about 1-3 weeks earlier than mine! WTF now Apple? Or is it just because of the Thai keyboard.

So tempted to order online but I really want to see the anti-glare screen before I make my final call. Hopefully the stores will carry both and from what my "genius" friend told me they don't sell to many 17" models.

Thanks a lot for the reply, I think I'm definitely going to get the glossy :)
