  • Screen refresh rates. Seriously, I just can't really notice much difference, even scrolling. I get that the screen refresh rate on the 11 Pro Max is not as fast, but it just isn't that noticeably slower when working on it. Sure, as I tested, I quickly scrolled homescreens horizontally and rapidly jumped back and forth between phones. There is a difference, it's just more subtle.
I wish this was the case for me. I compared the 14 and the 13 mini to my 13 pro at the store and the difference was huge to me, especially if you use dark mode. The 60hz screens just look so choppy after having promotion for a year. I would really like to have a lighter phone but I cant do the 60 hz now. Just hoping the 15 pro will either be lighter or the 15 will get promotion cause right now Im stuck with the 13 pro.

I purchased the iPhone 14PM this year, and like all recent years, was underwhelmed after the hype died down. The ProMotion display is jittery, there was a scuff on the stainless steel out of the box, and a big gap at the top of the screen, collecting dust. The camera bump is hideous and "dynamic island" looking like a barely useful gimmick.

Apple doesn't make exciting products anymore. The days of the iPod / iPad / iPhone innovations are over. That was Steve's thing. Tim's thing is profit, and milking out Steve's legacy to the very end. There are still hints of the old Apple in terms of design and usability, but a lot of the groundwork is already there (iOS etc).

Unfortunately, we live in a world of technological limbo. Both iOS / Android and MacOS / Windows are rather dull and uninspiring. Many of us choose to stick with Apple because of what they were, and because they still are (incredibly) the better choice by the narrowest of margins. The speed / efficiency of Apple silicon has ensured this.

So, in this game of pure profits and monotony, what better way than to make things interesting and pass it forward. If you were to generate at least the cost price of the phone from your usage of it, you're able to keep up with the "cutting edge" (if you can call it that) while also not being out of pocket.

I just use my phone as a business tool. I do videography / photography and have used an iPhone for client work in the past. I'm also heavy on social media / ads to generate leads and sales, and the speed & stability of iOS does help in this regard. So at the end of the year, I've made money on the purchase, and foolishly unboxing the new phone hoping for that nostalgic "ooohhh" moment

Photographer here too: I assume these improvements are in ProRaw, not JPEG (because I see no benefit from 11-14)? How are you finding the workflow of shooting only ProRaw?
I feel the same: From all the reviews that I have been watching/reading, the iPhone 14 Pro/PM will be a very minimal improvement over the iPhone 13 Pro for JPEG photos (side of the x2 telephoto new option). The interesting improvement is on shooting ProRaw 48MP... But then it falls down to storage capacity issues or doing some "gymnastics" by deleting them after having exported them etc. and I am still very septical to upgrade my 13 PM for the sake of having a 48MP camera in my pocket...

You do realize that big gap at the top of the screen is by design. It's the built-in stereo speaker and microphone.

I’m keeping my 14PM

I am aware the differences between the 13 are subtle. But I’m ok to pay for marginal upgrades for now at least. And if in the future the upgrades are even smaller then I’m happy to keep the phone I have.

That being said I did go to an evening lantern lights festival and all my family were using their iPhones 13 and older and the 14pm took the clearest photos and videos as the sun set. They all took my phone to take their photos

I think it’s in these edge/marginal cases where the newer phones will continue to improve and sometimes that makes a difference. At a dimly lit restaurant or bar with your loved one? The 14 pro will be better than the 13 and older.

It’s not by much but it’s something.

I’m happy with the 14pm 🤷🏾‍♂️ and I’m also happy for everyone that’s keeping their 13 (my wife being one, she has no interested in upgrading from her 13 pro)

I feel your lack of excitement.

But I was pumped when I opened my purple pro max. The phone is beautiful, the display is gorgeous and smooth and the unit is fast. The dynamic island is cool and was reminded that Apple still can innovate.

My wife is thinking of using the camera for real estate photography, we'll have to try it out and compare to some other photos she had a pro do.

So yeah, there was that "oooohhh" moment. But to each their own, I suppose.

Thank you, no I meant there's a gap between the glass and the frame, separate from the speaker arrangement at the top centre. It looks as though there was a misalignment in manufacturer tolerances.

That's cool that you're enjoying it, I also got purple and admit the colour is nice.

What I meant by an "ooohhh" moment was for example the first time I performed a swipe to unlock on the original iPhone, or the first time I saw a moving blue dot on Google Maps on the iPhone 3G, like grinning ear to ear this is the future type moment.

As a photographer, if I may offer some advice, I wouldn't say the camera is unsuitable for professional work, but it depends on the requirements.

The main difference with using an iPhone camera over a standalone camera is the fact that the iPhone relies heavily on computational power to create the image, whereas there are no such failsafes on most standalone cameras.

This can be good and bad. The bad can be a very digital, over-sharpened look, but for real estate this may not be too important. The good is when you're in challenging light, the low light performance and the automatic HDR processing can be useful. Additionally the ultra-wide angle camera on the iPhone might create some useful images for capturing real estate interior, without the need to purchase expensive fish eye lenses.

Anyway, thanks for the comment, and best of luck to your wife with her photography

First sentence of the post identifies the problem with half the posts in this thread. When you make your purchasing decisions based on "hype" instead of actual use or logic, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Sounds like another typical case of FOMO & inability to resist the hype.

Thanks to those who recommended Music Magpie. I'm happy with the 14 Pro Max and had planned to send my 12 Pro 256GB back to Apple who offered £380. Logged into MM who offered £465 and took it to a smart kiosk. £465 paid into my account immediately. Easy to do.

Yup, returned the 14 Pro and the 14 Pro Max. Couldn't get used to either chunky hefty bricks. Back to my dear 13 Mini. The moment I picked up the Mini again, it felt like such a relief!

Hope Apple comes to their senses and releases a 15 Mini. I can't do big chunky heavy phones.
My guess, there won't be a 15 mini. I personally wouldn't have charged almost $2,000 before seeing if the pro size and weight would be ok for me. But that's me.

I returned my iPhone 14 Pro 256 Silver to keep my iPhone 13 mini. The jump in size and weight was just waaaaaay too big of a leap. Guess I'll keep this little thing around until they stop updating it 😂
Same here. I just transferred all my stuff back to my 12 Mini from the 14 Pro. Way to big and heavy for me. Will be returning it tomorrow or Monday.
As soon as I get a good deal on it or the 12 Mini battery dies I will upgrade to the 13 Mini and keep using that as long as possible.

Apple are scammers when it comes to trade ins annoyingly. My iPhone 12 which I paid £849 for less than 2 years ago was apparently only worth £250 despite being immaculate. Best to sell private if you want the most money and at least you get cash and a face to face deal.

Pretty much sums it up. I love many of the products Apple makes, but I wish there was another alternative to Apple or Android. The duopoly sucks the most. No excuse for no USB-C-should have been on the first 'Pro' iPhone in 2019.
Yup! Everything is Super Slow since Steve Jobs decided to go to Heaven. Cheers from North Thailand
