Hybrid? It's not a hybrid, it IS a phone. Last time I checked, Android doesn't have an OS for a tablet. This is nothing more than a 7" god-ugly phone. Why do you think they are requiring contracts of 2 years? (I mean, besides the fact they have to be subsidized to even get someone to buy one.)

The US version does not have voice capability so it isnt a phone for us. Maybe you Europeans might say otherwise, but for us Yanks, its not a phone.

Nice assumption, but it fails miserably. You don't work for Samsung do you? Firstly notice the massive lag when he flips the orientation, the icons look very similar to an already invented and successfully market device called and iPhone, and to some degree the iPad. Thirdly its running the **** Android OS which I with a vengeance and why would I want to run an OS designed by Google? Apple make the best phone software, not Samsung. The display is LCD, apparently due to Samsung's inability to keep demand with AMOLED, but its not even an IPS display. LCD's suck more juice than AMOLED due to the power guzzling backlight. Samsung have "borrowed" or "duplicated" even the same screen gestures for switching between your pages of "Apps" oops sorry "Widgets".

Guess what it even has "MultiTouch", and correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Apple develop this first and use the same name? Plus zoom, pinch, rotate - im sure I've heard these "Apple" terms well before now. Samsung are so creative, they even use the same "Phone" icon as on the iPhone. Even the zoom in and zoom out effect to execute apps on the iPhone is duplicated on the Galaxy Tab. Even the email application layout horizontally looks almost identical to the Apple Mail app - again so creative. Honestly, the longer I watch the youtube video, the more I realise the Galaxy Tab is unfortunately in a world of its own literally. Its a poor man's iPad / iPhone combined, plus its made of plastic. Not to mention Apple has the largest App store on the planet.

Samsung's labelling on the back of these should say "Samsung Galaxy - Inspired by the Apple iPhone 4 / Ipad"

lol they actually released this thing? its about half the size of the iPad! I thought they were just being sarcastic or something

The fact is their market is people who want an iPad but won't buy it because its an Apple product  and why buy 2nd best cuz u got a grude with Apple lol :p

Same reason people buy Android phones, they know the iPhone is better but they think they are fighting "the big man"
:apple:

I like Apples products and I ownn a few but the reason I buy Android or whatever is because I want choice. I dont want Apple telling me I can only have 16gigs in my device with no upgrade and charge me up the a$$ for it. Then come out with an "upgraded" model a month later for the same price.

"Upgrade" model a month later? Me thinks you speak from your ass.

Most Apple products have a 1 year life cycle. For a tech device, that is like an eternity. Aren't the Android OEMs the ones employing the new model every month strategy?

The Samsung was at one point my ideal tablet when I first started comparing tablets. The higher price, somewhat buggy looking os, and just overall appearance really sets it back for me though. I'm going to wait for the new iPad. Whenever that will be.....

Your judging this product from an extremely biased viewpoint. I own Apple products myself but I am in no way brand loyal to one manufacturer.

1) Apparent lag: These are prototype devices so take it with a grain of salt.

2) Similarity of icons: Nobody patented a design of an icon.

3) Android OS: There are many advantages to this OS, one being true
multitasking. The core kernal is based on Linux. So its very stable.

4) LCD power consumption: Yes, LCD eats up more battery power. But isnt the iPad also LCD?

5) Lack of AMOLED: 7" AMOLED are much more expensive than 4" ones. Besides, every one in the world is demanding AMOLED from Samsung, including Apple. A new plant will be up and running in the Q2 of 2011 to meet these demands.

6) Galaxy Tab uses IPS LCD display: http://www.oled-display.net/hydis-d...axy-tab-amoled-version-scheduled-for-mid-2011

7) Apple did not invent Multi-touch. It was available in the research field for many years.

8) The Tab is made out of ABS plastic, toughest in the world. It's cheaper to replace than brushed aluminum.

Well it boasts alot of features the ipad currently doesnt have.. 3mp camera, Flash support, External card slot, usb ports, higher res screen, more portable size.

I dont know. Fromwhat i've seen it looks like a rather nice tablet considering it'll cost less then the lowest priced iPad

wrong. maybe subsidized but the price was leaked for unsubsidized versions in Australia and they cost $999 usd

If it costs less than the lowest priced iPad, then we're definetly talking about an iPad killer possibly. :D

Let's see if it also has 10 hours of battery just to be sure :p

1) Depends... it'll probably have some sort of lag though.

2) The app icons don't need to be patented to clearly see that Samsung copied Apple's. Enough said.

3) True multitasking? I'm just fine with iOS's implementation, thank you very much.

4) According to Apple's spec list: 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology.

5) Where did you get these facts? Seriously, half the stuff you say is made up. Apple never said they wanted AMOLED. Some reports suggested Apple was going to use it, but Apple obviously didn't. They don't like AMOLED. They went with their own custom display - the Retina Display.

6) So does the iPad...

7) True, but Apple put it into play with the iPhone, which sparked the multi-touch revolution.

8) Proof? But does it look as nice? :D

+1

The lack of originality in the marketplace is utterly shocking.
Check out the Tab's KB dock. :)

Apple releases new product, blogosphere erupts with complaints and rants.
A few months later competitors release strikingly similar products. :p

Well said. This looks like a great attempt to play catch-up to the iPad. I am confused as to how this is going to "kill the iPad" when it has already sold MILLIONS. Are the millions of people who already purchased iPad going to take it back and buy one of these?

The size also does not make much sense to me. Everyone talks about the iPad as being a giant iPhone. I have both products and I have both for a reason. My draw to the iPad is that the screen is so large, yet still portable at the same time. I personally would find a 7inch iPad completely useless when you already have a smart phone.

I am also growing tired of people using the argument that the only reason that I purchased the iPad is that I am a "fanboy."

1. Apple put out the first of its kind tablet device, and other companies are just now catching up... Even though one has yet to be released.

2. Could I not make the same argument and say that you are NOT buying because for some reason you hate anything Apple makes?

3. I personally like the fact that I can buy all of my devices from one company. The way my Macbook pro, iPhone 4, and iPad work together is completely flawless. All three devices have their own purpose, and their own usage. The fact that they all sync up to iTunes makes them a joy to work with. For me it would not make much sense to have a Macbook Pro and an android, or an iPhone and a Dell.

4. Yes, I am being loyal to Apple. I have no reason not to be loyal to Apple. I have been happy with every device that I have purchased from them. When I have had problems, I bring the device right into one of their stores and 9 out of 10 times they either fix or replace it. I like that I do not have to mail it back in to the company and wait for a month.

Personally, I look at this device like I look at all of the other Apple Killers. Apple released it first, but had been working on the platform for years. The other companies however, seem to rush to come out with something that will "compete" with Apple. They throw on a few extra features to make it look like a better product. To me these releases often seem rushed, and end up clunky, and far less user friendly. Having said that, I am glad that they are finally releasing something. Apple needs the competition to continue to better its own products.

I will say though. Nothing will kill the ipad (until the iPad 2 is released). I guarantee I will still be able to sell my 1st generation for at least half the price though. Yes, the android tablet will sell, because like Apple, android has its own following. To each his own. I just love that every new device on the market has to compare itself to the iPhone, iPad, or general IOS platform. They can come up with 1,000 reasons why it is better, but the fact that they feel the need to justify why they should buy this product over Apple's shows that iPad is still the superior product.

As I said before, the iPad has been out for months, and sold MILLIONS. It appears that these products are too little too late to kill iPad or Apple. Also when will they be released? Apple is already working on its 2nd generation which will most likely be released in April again. Just in time for Android to try to play catch up to yet another superior Apple product. The vicious circle will continue.

Sorry for the long post, but I think I covered all of it! CHEERS!

Your judging this product from an extremely biased viewpoint. I own Apple products myself but I am in no way brand loyal to one manufacturer.

1) Apparent lag: These are prototype devices so take it with a grain of salt.

ANSWER: You don't see Apple hardware stagger when on display.

2) Similarity of icons: Nobody patented a design of an icon.

ANSWER: True, but don't you find it funny they all follow Apple's lead - not very creative. Another "borrowed" feature. Apple started The iPhone and every other company has tried to copy it.

3) Android OS: There are many advantages to this OS, one being true
multitasking. The core kernal is based on Linux. So its very stable.

ANSWER: Mac OSX is also based on Unix, just like the iPhone OS / iPad OS. As for multitasking, again the iPhone / iPad OS' can do this in their own way, but I prefer to start an app then quit when finished - not keep everything running in memory.

4) LCD power consumption: Yes, LCD eats up more battery power. But isnt the iPad also LCD?

ANSWER: The iPad uses an LCD with IPS, and it has very large batteries (two in serial) to power the device. Unlike the Samsung which has a smaller single battery still trying to power a large LCD and backlight.

5) Lack of AMOLED: 7" AMOLED are much more expensive than 4" ones. Besides, every one in the world is demanding AMOLED from Samsung, including Apple. A new plant will be up and running in the Q2 of 2011 to meet these demands.

ANSWER: The additional expense is highly subjective as we all know the more that are produced the cheaper it gets.

6) Galaxy Tab uses IPS LCD display: http://www.oled-display.net/hydis-d...axy-tab-amoled-version-scheduled-for-mid-2011

ANSWER: Correct

7) Apple did not invent Multi-touch. It was available in the research field for many years.

ANSWER: Apple was one of the few that released it to marked to mass appeal, and look at the popularity of this now. If it wasnt for Apple this would not be as popular.

8) The Tab is made out of ABS plastic, toughest in the world. It's cheaper to replace than brushed aluminum.

ANSWER: Why would I want to pay up to AU$800 for a plastic device? If you clumsy enough to lose a device like this, give it up. I want metal / glass for this price, not cheap plastic.

I think this device will fail -- iPad 2 will be out soon enough pushing Apple even further ahead. However, IIRC, the Tab only weighs ~350g which is definitely a big plus.

So when Apple releases an iPad made of plastic, will you shun it too?

Just curious.

Though +1 to samgsung for not calling it the sPad or something as everyone else went OCD about having pad in the name after Apple announced iPad

:apple: iPad is only real tablet though thats worth buying that doesn't run a desktop OS

Your assertion that the iPad is guaranteed to be released with a plastic body (by your use of "when" rather than "if") is nothing more than fanciful provoking.

Based on current sales of the iPad and competitive devices planned to be offered, Apple appears to have the lowest cost option. That's an interesting place for Apple to be in. Unless Apple is losing a boatload of money with the current price structure, there is no reason for Apple to cut costs by switching to a plastic body.

That's all fine and dandy but it doesn't mean the iPad couldn't do the same thing. I can already contol my tv via cable provider apps. I've seen some for your home heating and AC and there's an onstar app already out to be linked to the chevy volt to control it's charging cycle etc from your device.

Plus that guy just sounds like a car salesman.

Apple did contact Samsung about AMOLED's. Samsung didnt have enough supply available so they jumped ship and contacted LG to acquire their high resolution LCD display and renamed it "Retina Display".

Yes, I know that iPad has IPS tech. So does the Galaxy Tab but with a more advanced tech called AFFS.

The bigger your device the easier the target for theft. Would'nt it be worse if you lost your glossy glass/metal concoction then a so called "plastic" one?

True. But those are third party apps. This one is from the manufacturer itself. And its running on DLNA technology, which is an industry standard, something I wish Apple incorporates into their future products.

http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-galaxy-tabs-bluetooth-stylushandset-spotted-for-sale-28104826/

The specifications are just as Samsung explained to us: the stylus has a capacitive nib, for writing and drawing on the Galaxy Tab’s capacitive touchscreen, but also includes a Bluetooth module. That supports MultiPoint – so it can be paired with both the Galaxy Tab and a second Bluetooth device, such as your regular cellphone – and allows you to answer or reject calls remotely.

Play’s description makes no mention of it, but Samsung told us – and the tiny grill you can see near the top in the image above – that the Bluetooth Stylus would also work as a hands-free kit, held to your ear as you would an old-fashioned phone handset.

That last quote sounds funny. lol :D

But obviously its a speakerphone not a earpiece.

I am really anxious for other companies to start making decent tablets so I have more choice!

To be honest though, this whole Android vs. iPhone comparison is stupid.

iPhone is 1 phone model (2 if you count memory) made by a single manufacturer. Android phones are being made by several different manufacturers.

Everyone who has an iPhone spent at LEAST $218 cash to get it, and signed a 2 year commitment to pay thousands more.

Most android phones are buy one get one free, or even just sign a 2 year contract and get 1 or 2 free. Even the Captivate, by far the best android on ATT, is like 15 bux with a 2 year agreement here!

Even with those HUGE discrepancies in price, Apple is still competing against all those companies and doing quite well!

5% of people get an Android phone (future tablets) because it will do something they need that the iPhone cannot. The other 95% of people who get Android do so because they can't afford the Apple version.

The only way this or any tablet will EVER compete with the iPad is by being significantly cheaper!
