On paper it looks good. Having the memory card slot certainly facilitates the transfer of pics from camera easily and the USB port is handy so I can rip DVD's etc direct to device.

The ability to play divx movies is handy too as the films I download are mostly in this format. Flash of course is nice to have.

Just depends on build quality and how well/ smooth the OS is.

Unless they build 2 million per month it _cannot_ possibly kill the iPad. Now unless someone shows me credible evidence that Samsung is going to build two million per month, it is not an iPad killer.

But which store would be putting a Galaxy for £679 on their shelves? How are they supposed to sell it for that money? There is such a thing as brand recognition / recognition of the iTunes Store, and Samsung needs to be 20% below Apple price to sell anything that is comparable from hardware point of view.

What would any customers do when they find it is not compatible with iTunes?

2 GB storage makes it a toy, same as an iPod Shuffle. And I would be curious what kind of Touchscreen you get on a £179 device. Samsung will at least build something that _competes_ with the iPad in a meaningful way.

2 GB memory and movies don't go together well. And that 3 hour battery life, what do you think happens to that number when you run Flash?

But it won't be 679 in the shelf because that nice subsidized on contract pricing you get ;)

That will one of the biggest downfalls. The iPad is a no contract device with a doable price point. The Tab is expensive off of contract. Unless it fits your phone needs, how many people are going to want to lock into a 2 year contract with the way this market is changing??
 
Google said Android 2.2 is not optimized for tablet, so it means it is not ready for launch on Tablet. Current Android OS is not optimized. I am not sure why this is difficult to understand for some people. Samsung TAB will fail.

Change Microsoft to Google and the same statement still applies. Apple seems to be doing just fine given that Microsoft "won", and I suspect they'll continue to do so if Google "wins" the mobile device marketshare battle. If you don't believe me, check the stock price when SJ made the above statement and compare it to today. ;)

+1 except for Flash.

Palm tried a similar restrictive approach with no file system, data files only accessible to one program, locked down UI and sync as only way to transfer files to the device.

It killed Palm because the device was counterintuitive compared to computer UI's and the limited functionality was quickly taken over by cell phones.

Apples iPad seems to be heading in a similar direction. The limited functionality that I get from my iPad can be done with a Android device as well. There is no reason for me to be locked in the iPad platform I can switch whenever I want. This is different with Mac's because here I'm locked into OSX because of all the software/data and I get ALL functionality anyway.
 
This thing is not cheaper. Since when does a device that requires a contract make it cheaper.

I don't understand the 7" concept. Why would I want a 7" inch device in my coat pocket when I could just carry a galaxy s. The tab in the U.S. Has less capability than the phone, plus it requires a contract. FAIIIIIIL!!!

YOU WANT ME TO SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE FOR SOMETHING THAT IS A SO SO DEVICE. 2.2 isn't even a tablet OS. SAMSUNG DOESNT CARE ABOUT THE CONSUME. THIS DEVICE JUST HEPLS THEM GET INTO THE TABLET ARENA BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.

This is a classic. Competitors tries to create an iDevice killer simply putting in it the more features they can.

And it seems it never works.

It's like three years ago when Apple launched the first iPhone. Every other smartphone on the market had more features .. But we know how the story went and still goes.
 
It's brand loyalty. Apple has become like the new Sony. There are people that will buy Apple just because it's Apple. As far as I can see, there are alot of great looking tablet devices coming down the line, not just from Samsung, but other companies as well.

I disagree.
iPad was the first Apple device i ever owned, and i bought it not because of loyalty, i played with my friend's iPhone and loved the UI, i also needed something portable for web-surfing,watching vids and reading books and I'm quite happy with my purchase.
I'm not loyal to Apple or any other brands, i buy things that suits my needs no matter what brand they have.
 
One thing about almost any other touch-screen devices besides the iPhone, including the limited number of android phones I've seen... the touch screen responsiveness just isn't there. I'm not sure if its hardware, software or both when it comes to android, but iPhone/iPod Touch have hands down the most responsive, natural-feeling and least sluggish touch interface around. When you press something, the action is instant. I can't say the same for other devices I've used, and it looks somewhat similar with this device.

It didn't look bad by any means, but there is something about touch devices where the responsiveness has to be just right, and Apple's products are the only ones I've used thus far that feel perfect.
 
This is a galaxy away from the iPad. Just like the Androids are a galaxy away from the iPhone. The guy pressed on an app and it lagged big time. I just dont know who lets this nowhere near beta products in public even.

Apple put the bar too far. They don't even see it.
Basically Apple makes something with a great UI and class all around. And all other manufacturers just do a really bad copy of it(****** UI, tasteless designs) and try to compete by adding ports or some other junk that doesn't matter.

Then people with a sense of quality and style buy Apple's product(because they are obviously superior, and haters point at them trolling " omg Apple fanboys" while they are buying their crapware saying to each other " i got 2 more ports + 3 never-going-to-be-used-features more than the Apple product which costs xxx $ more,LOL STUPID FANBOYS".

Have to agree with the previous poster. The iPad is a perfect example of how usability trumps specs everytime. It's not the fastest or the most powerful. It's not the smallest and it's not the most gadgety. But it works. The user interface is what makes it a joy to use; it feels natural.

The Android devices I've seen might have a faster processor, more RAM, a memory card slot, an HDMI port, a USB port, etc, etc….but it's the interface that's the killer. iPad wins hands down.
 
Is this an iPad killer? Not likely... is it going to be a good tablet? Yes. Will it take sales away from the iPad? Yes. Do I want it? No... and why is that? Because 7" isn't big enough, IMHO, and Samsung loves to bastardize OS's.

Being someone that owns a Nexus One and an iPad, I have no brand loyalty or OS loyalty for that matter. I just recently got my iPad for what it is, a large touchscreen that is great for web surfing, in class note taking, and messig around... plus it does a damn good job at being an MP3 player and video player. I got my Nexus One because I am a huge fan of Android, great smartphone OS, Apple could learn a thing or two (Android could learn a thing or two from Apple as well).

To be very honest, not going to sugar coat this at all, there is nowhere iOS surpasses Android by a long shot as many of you seem to act like it does here... does it have a better GUI thus scroll better? Yes... but as it stands, if I want to check my IM on my iPad, I have to close my browser, open up the IM client, check it, then close that and go back to browsing, and sometimes that means reloading the page I was on... with Android, I swype down, click on my notification, respond, then hit my back button and I am back to browsing... don't close anything, don't loose anything, totally seemless...

And of course iOS does things better than Android, like music and video playing, idiot proofing, web browsing is much more finger friendly and more complete (flash SUCKS on Android, don't believe anyone that says otherwise, they are full of CRAP if they say it works well, it DOES NOT WORK WELL!)

But as devices, not OS's, it is really hard to touch i/anything... the OS is always well polished and easy to use. The hardware is always top notch, good looking, and well put together. When you combine the two, it is very hard to beat, even with more bells and whistles.... this Samsung tab is going to be the same as most every Samsung "top end" product, will fall apart in a year or two, will have cripling Samsung UI tweaks, and while powerful, will be a one hit wonder in the ring.

Maybe when Google releases an Android tablet, or HTC makes one, we will see a real competitor to the iPad, but overall the OS and Hardware combo from Apple is better than anything else out there, or that I have seen in the works... and once 4.2 hits with multi-tasking, my few frustrations will be gone 100%.

You do know that pretty much every single person admits that Android is going to shoot past the iPhone and leave it in it's wake in the not too distant future don't you?

One company making one product can never compete against a dozen or so major manufacturers making the same based competing product.

All that would need is Nokia to decide to go Android, which it does not want to do as it's till trying to stand against the tide and it would be all over numbers wise.

Of course not, but I'll start paying attention when one single hardware model using Android outsells the iPad or iPhone. It's a bit farther away than you think. Samsung won't sell 3 million in the first few months if ever.

Android= OS, iOS= OS, iPhone= Device with iOS.

You cant compare an OS with an device. Then your sentence should be

Now you have to consider iPad, iPod Touch and the iPhone in the same category. Android will probably be on more devices, but so what? iOS will still be the best mobile OS for the people that demand the best, and Android will be the mass produced OS for the plastic fantastic fischer-price-feel-like devices from various makers for the haters and people with not such high standards for their devices(not that thats anything wrong, some people just dont care if their mobile os is top notch)

Oh and androids icon are so revolutionary. There as generic if not more and every time I've messed with an android device it's been sluggish. As expected the os and device are not always on the same page and still not overlay impressed with chrome. Just my opinion that really doesn't equate too squat though.
 
Looks like a Samsung Galaxy Tab Killer.

There us nothing about it that would give me equal or greater productivity compared to an iPad. If this was available one year ago, it would have been quite incredible... now, it's like something nicely average.
