No actually apples flagshp device is the mac computer. Im sure they make more money on their computers and software like finsl cut than the app store.

And that still doesnt mean thst the ipad hadto be a bigipod touch and apple should at least pUt more resources and have a superior model esp for the price, of the ipad over the ipodtouch. Apple is a big and richcompany, im sure they could hire a conpetent ipad divison and not cut corners. And hire some game developers please, even the losing-billions-a-year sony is trying harder now.

What part of 'flagship iOS device' are you not understanding?

The flagship part? Or the iOS device part?

while I agree the iPad does need more ram, I think this is a bad example. Infinity Blade is a texture heavy game.

On your gaming PC do you play a fullscreen, resource heavy game with a web browser open in the background? I typically don't. With my new MacBook pro and 4GB of ram it is not as much of an issue, but on my old gaming PC with just 2GB of ram I would start paging if I left other apps open in the background.

I find the 256MB let's me switch between 4-5 productivity apps with no issue. The 512 MB is a lot better so expect the iPad 2 wil have at least 512MB.

And about the playbook having 1GB...it is going to need it running all those adobe air apps....

Quite a bad example.

Your computer does not use the main memory to store textures. That's where your dedicated graphic card comes into play and why it has 256MB, 512MB or 1GB of memory for frame buffering.

Granted, it is not like the PS3 and Xbox 360 have heaps of memory either.

I've always thought the iPad needed a nuclear reactor instead of lame ole batteries, that would allow us to have better processors.
Heat issues will be fun :D

This along with the people saying X amount of RAM is enough are completely missing the point (and totally incorrect). More RAM is ALWAYS better. Cost and the available densities are the only factors to not have more RAM.

Don't fool yourself into thinking Apple knew best and that the iPad only needed 256MB of RAM. The only reason Apple put so little RAM in the iPad was cost. They want their huge margins and will cut specs to get them.

Well, I can't say how much it needs but I agree the iPad does not currently have enough memory for optimal performance (either with iOS3 or 4).

Even under iOS3 within a Safari instance with a few tabs open (and I literally mean a few - 3 tabs) switching from one tab to another or back would often cause a tab to reload. Fairly frustrating and slow but it did not happen all the time and overall the iPad seemed pretty snappy.

Under iOS4 Everything seems slower - not as bad as an iPhone3G running iOS4 which was pretty unusable, but enough its noticeable and enough the iPad is less enjoyable to use. And the issue with Safari pages reloading is worse (more frequent) as well.

It seems likely that RAM is the culprit and that even the largely pseudo multi tasking in iOS 4 require more RAM for optimal performance. I'd guess Apple should have put 512mb in the original iPAD and should consider 1gb for iPadv2 given would expect more sophisticated apps and higher performance on the iPad than an iPhone.

We'll see what happens. As much as I like my iPad I'm looking forward to the next generation of Android or Chrome slates and will make my next buying decision on how well a product meets my needs. I already dumped my iPhone in favor of an Android phone to get away from AT&T and so far am happy with the sophistication tradeoff against greater functionality.

Who said that?

I thought it was widely talked about that Apple had set a price that they were going to, and had room to drop by quite a bit if it turned out to be a flop.

As it sold better than expected, no price drop was needed.

They said they had room to drop it a bit if needed. Read any analysts view of the iPad and you'll see that they all know the iPad does not have a usual Apple profit margin.

Also, did you realize that component cost is not the only cost in a product? It's weird, the OS and hardware development don't just magically happen! Crazy, huh?

Oh no, of course, I fully appreciate the fact that there is more to the cost of any product than just the "Parts"

I also know that it costs very little per unit to add in things that many people consider luxury.

EG: Perhaps Apple may fit 512MB of RAM which I think many here would be a little disappointed in given that we need 512MB NOW really, let alone for the extra features the next model may have, and that new model will have to last with the spec it's given to mid 2012 ish.

Also given people will be saying, Well the Blackberry has 1GB at the time the iPad2 is launched.

If it adds another 10 or 20 dollars to give the iPad2 1GB and make it pretty future proof then I for one would happily pay those few dollars more.

We shall see.

I expect Apple will put as little in as they think they can get away with.

I don't think Apple really cares to future-proof their products, so I suspect you are right and that they will add everything in little increments to make people want to upgrade multiple times.
