Start creating only portless iPhones and after more than 10 years I'll move back to Android.

If the portless means really portless, that means the marketing division really badly defeated the engineers and common sense was fully dropped.
Same boat. I've purchased my first iPhone 5 back in 2012 and would move back to Android if Apple truly went portless.

Funny, if Apple releases a port-less iPhone it will be highly ridiculed and soon after adopted by all smartphone platforms. Personally I’m looking forward to a port-less iPhone!

Some Android OEMs actually already toyed with the idea (I think Xiaomi made a portless handset once).

I think I need to remind some people that things that Apple will do might not actually new. Eg phone without SIM slot. The first Motorola foldable RAZR actually is eSIM only without a SIM slot .

It's just that when Apple decided to do it, it is very likely that that feature will be the accepted norm. Apple usually bet on the right horses when the time comes.

I’m not so sure about adoption amongst other smartphones. In fact, it could be used as a selling point. I can see why you would look forward to having less on an iPhone though.

If this is portless, how would car infortain system would work without tether? Is Apple telling everyone to abandon their car for a newer wireless CarPlay?

There are wireless CarPlay USB box out there that work 50/50...

I don't look forward to a portless iPhone, but you're absolutely right that Samsung will come out with some cringe ad making fun of it and then the next year their flagships will be portless.

Apple does have a good record of removing something at the right time; I think the fact that they haven't gone portless yet is because the technology is not sufficient to match the capability of a wired connection. When it improves, I think they will ditch the port. I do think that Apple will go straight from Lightning to portless; there will never be a USB-C iPhone.

Spot on. Until something superior to lightning exists I can’t imagine iPhone going portless. Doesn’t seem very “Pro”. I also suspect android devices wouldn’t go portless for the same reason.

I would have to carry around a much larger, bulky wireless charger if they went portless. There are next to zero public places that have wireless chargers ready to go but plenty of outlets.

You're probably right but think Apple will make this an option on a higher end model maybe. I don't think they'll force this on everyone right away.

It'll have a smart connector like the iPads allowing cabled USB-C/USB-A connections to devices/cars...

...but not until iPhone 15 or 16 ;)

It almost feels like something I read about NY recently where it seems like Apple let them know when they’d implement a thing, then NY passed the regulation requiring it right after Apple implemented it. The EU’s initial pose of “HAS TO BE DONE RIGHT NOW” changed to “has to be done in awhile” which, if Apple does it just before the EU’s deadline, who’s to say that Apple didn’t dictate when they should set the date for?

No one wants to be the reason why iPhones aren’t available, so I could totally see how the EU says, “See, we dropped the hammer down” with Apple having instructed them precisely when and where to drop the hammer :)

Yeah, I remember when OSX dropped, nothing worked with it, and OSX barely ran at all... Ah, fun times! 😉

I still have the first OSX around here (somewhere). I still have discs from the Apple developer subscription service. Oh, and most of the Inside Macintosh manuals. I just can't seem to toss them. Yet. But then I have a copy of the doctoral thesis that was the roots of Python, and some of the early AT&T/Bell Labs publications for Unix, and lots of other things that are too old and yet not collectable yet. *sigh* (I did have a Singer Friden calculator that used magnets and mercury reed switches for the keyboard, and had a small circlular CRT screen that showed the numbers entered in to it for calculations. (And the wife tossed it)) The good old days...

A bald head is a solar collector for a s-x machine... And some people have no choice. I started losing my hair at 20, how about you, SFjohn? And *most* women LOVE bald men. Really...

I remember thinking about paying for Rogaine, or letting it all go. So I could pay nearly a hundred dollars EVERY MONTH, with no guarantee that it would ever work or keep working to try to bribe my hair to stay, or spend that nearly hundred dollars on tequila, travel, beer, bike and computer parts? Vanity lost that one... :D

Agreed, a lot of women like men with bald heads (to me it looks more virile and high testosterone). Thankfully (at least in my case) a lot of men in SF are attracted to it as well. 👍🏻
