iPhone 14/Plus The iPhone 14 Plus is going to sell like crazy.

Nope. The public prefers 6.1 inch model. The mini was too small for the public. It was just an odd place in the lineup.

Now if the mini was introduce at $399 as opposed to $699. Maybe it would have sold better.

The public prefers 6.1.

Remember that some people use their iPhone as a phone and……a tablet. A 6.5 inch device is so big that you could watch a TV show on it for 1hour without wishing that you had an iPad. 📱📺

It’s been overdue for Apple to release a large screen phone that isn’t an very expensive flagship. I think that the 14 Plus will be incredibly well received.

I spent the day yesterday with 8 women. Educated, intelligent people with families and businesses and some of them even enterprises. Most of them had iPhones, there were two that used android devices.

I asked if anyone pre-ordered the iPhone (I did). None of them even knew there were iPhones coming out. None of them cared. One woman, who’s currently working on her PhD, struggled to understand the dynamic Island when I was explaining it to her. I was like, OK, well never mind then. This stuff doesn’t even blip on their radar of what’s important.

These are wives of my husband’s colleagues. Speaking of my husband’s colleagues, none of them care about this stuff, either. I did an unofficial poll. They use their phones until they become cumbersome and then they get new. My husband was using his 5s until I gave him my XR in late 2019. He’d still be using that if I hadn’t forced my 11p into his hands when I got my 13p beginning of this year. He just doesn’t care. He’s a brilliant man and works in a small, elite unit of educated men. I’m not bragging, I’m just saying I’m really surprised that all these folks with money and access and education couldn’t give less of a sh*t about phones.

Makes me feel like I’m a strange breed indeed.
I believe they’re called “normal” consumers 😊

We tech enthusiasts usually get quite biased views on gadgets as we are surrounded by an echo chamber of tech bloggers and YouTubers. The normal consumers outside this bubble have different views.

Also when I worked in IT, I often did Authenticator resets and would help users install outlook on their mobile. You would be surprised at the sheer amount of people I encountered who didn’t even know what the model of their iPhone was called, and these were people that worked in finance, marketing, administration, all more seasoned positions that paid at the very minimum 50k a year or often times way more.
The have better things to think about than the specific type of their phone. 😂

This is exactly what I’m talking about. I work with these kind of people as well. I’m a system engineer so I’m a very tech savvy individual. I work with a team of engineers. They have a mix of Samsung and iPhones. My colleague has an 11, and he didn’t even know what it was until I asked him and looked at it “Oh that’s an 11” I said.

One time late last year working in the office, one of the presidents came up to me asking if I could reset his MFA. He was still using an iPhone X/XS.

Majority of people outside of YouTube and tech bubbles literally don’t care. My best friend is using an iPhone 8. He text me the other day and asked “What iPhone should I get?” Only because he knows that I know. He doesn’t even know what the current models are called. I said that it would be best to wait for the 14’s and I tried to tell him the differences between the Pros and non-Pros and he quickly lost interest. He just wants a phone that works.

I think the 14 Plus will be a 'slow burner'. Very popular over time, but might not have big sales numbers at first. Early adopters tend to be enthusiasts (like us) who go for the Pro models, whereas the Plus is a solid option for the majority of the market who upgrade whenever they're ready or have a need to.

It won't set the enthusiast world on fire, but it's a great option for those who simply want a big display and great battery life. I think that covers a lot of people.

I’m not sure I agree with that but this may be different depending on the country. The standard iPhones in the past have always been popular pre orders. The iPhone 12 when I last bought a phone sold out within a couple of days and shipping dates slipped. Not sure why this would change but then pre orders in a lot of regions will be down this year due to the economic climate, especially in Europe.

I'd say the iPhone 12 would be a supercycle. A lot of people bought because of the form factor and 5G. Typically, with a conventional release like iPhone 11 or 13, pre-orders don't face any delays, not over launch weekend.

iPhone 14 Plus should really scoop up any of the laggards who are still using iPhone X. With a 5 year old battery, many of them will looking for an large display upgrade, something that wasn't available in 2017.

That’s a good point about the super cycle. I remember getting mine as soon as the 1pm window opened and friends of mine who bought later in the afternoon didn’t get their 12’s for a couple of weeks after mine. The 14 and 14 Plus seem to still be available after a couple of days here but as I’ve said the cost is much higher this year. In the long run I think it’ll be more popular but Apple are also selling the 13 which will take people who are on older devices and where cost is a factor. I think if they’d have released a Plus last year before the eco mid crisis, it might well have sold out by now.

I've watched a near 2 hour youtube video on my 6.1" 12 Pro and it was fine. I don't want to carry around a phablet.

The 14 Plus may do well over time but here in the UK it's £949 for the base model which is the same as last years 13 Pro. The 14 Plus isn't a flagship but it's pretty much priced as one.

Everyone here is in a post-launch awareness situation. But in the real world, the vast majority of people weren't even aware iPhone 14 launched, or what numbering Apple is up to this year. Educating the public about the features of a new product is half the battle.

Many people aren't even thinking of buying a new phone. Advertising needs to be up few months to inform and remind people there are faster phones with bigger displays and battery life. These are the typical Plus buyers, and they are certainly not day one pre-order seekers.

I think most of the people citing the popularity of Iphone XR and 11 forget one simple fact, that can be looked up in google right away - pricing and pricing shock.

Iphone XR and 11 debuted at $700 while 11 Pro was $1000 and 11PM $1100.
That is for a moment $300-$400 price difference or 50%+ of the Iphone 11's value.

At $300-$400 savings, I would sit tight and enjoy cheaper model. Current pricing is $800(14)-$900(14 plus) versus $1000(14P)-$1100(14PM), which is effectively $100-$300 difference.

Keep in mind that XS, XS Max, 11 Pro and 11 PM were the first phones to break the mental barrier of $1000 for a phone, which set back so many people to stay in the regular $600-$700 iphone range.

In conclusion, everyone's price tolerance is different. I wouldn't mind paying $200 more (esp. with inflation crazy like now) to get a better phone, but $300 or $400 would break the deal for me like it did before (I got 13 mini, 13 $300-$500 cheaper than 13P-13PM). At the same time I have friends that would not budge over 50 cents - I tell them that one item is much better for only 50c but they don't care and not willing to overpay over smth that is proven to meet their needs.

It is not only about phones - it is about all the life items that we see out there.
My boss is making $2.3M take home annually, he could care less and buys $25K base Toyota Camry once every 10-15 years. That is it. While a lot of people not making even close riding a 80K trucks around me.
He spends his free money buying lands near the ocean and building the houses for sale or egg farms in the woods.

We are all built different and I just saw someone having a huge collection of Crocs with accessories. Some people rave about Rolex or PP watches for $10K-$100K.

All the folks with or without money, access and education have their own preferences as to where to spend the money.

Again we have Buffet that only has a private jet out of luxury items, cause it saves him time.

So it is pretty much an ok thing to be indifferent towards one or another items. If you give me $100M - I would never be interested in watches over $15K, any Prada/Gucci items, or private jets/boats - that is just not interesting to me at all. I would rather spend money on cars, tech, Scotch collection and travel.

It is just local people from macrumors have their hobbies as an Apple Tech - this is our little splurge if you will.

Yeah, I’m not at all surprised that gadget enthusiasm doesn’t correlate with income or education. It’s just a thing to be into… I always have been (since I was a kid and had no income and little education, lol).

That said, even the few friends IRL whom I used to chat with phones/tech about barely care these days… It’s not the 2010s anymore, phones just aren’t that exciting.

XR was launched at $749. There were countless debates here why someone would be insane to go LCD and single rear lens for a mere $250 savings.

Mainstream customers don’t use a telephoto lens. They don’t even know what telephoto is. When they look iPhone 14 Plus vs. Pro Max, all they see is a third camera and a weird island. To them, that $200 savings just means those two things.

We are enthusiasts, everyone that participates on MacRumors Forums is probably the most tech savvy person in their family, so granted, majority of us are going to always gravitate towards Pro models. Most of us understands that the 14 Plus is basically a stripped down, repackaged 13 Pro Max.

But I am firmly predicting that this phone is going to be the next iPhone 6S/6S Plus, iPhone XR. This model is going to sell like crazy because it's a big phone that has a massive battery and it's under 1k. This will be the go-to phone for normies, and the kind of phone you buy your parents/grand parents. People that have the XR, SE (2020), or any iPhone 8/8Plus or below is going to probably get this phone.

Calling it now!
You're SO right. I'm getting the 14+ for my dad. He gets to pick out a color when I take him to the Apple Store later on.
He needs the bigger screen and doesn't need the Pro features. This is a godsend!

Agreed. The 14 Plus is not priced like the iPhone XR was. This year, the Pro with its new features is too tempting over a 14 Plus. However, things could change next year if the non Pro 15 models get the display and camera system that’s on the Pro models.

I feel like your dad (age and vision wise).

I am upgrading from a 12 Pro to 14 Plus mainly for the larger screen and SOS Emergency feature (fly fishing remote rivers without cell access).

No need for the 14 Pro/Max camera this time around as I didn't use much of the 12 Pro features anyways.

BTW, the last time I got the 12 Pro was because of 5G.

Guess I am a feature driven consumer....

It really isn’t. For a number of very obvious reasons explained elsewhere. It will bring up the rear out of the four 14 models, and may well be behind the SE and last years iPhones and the 12 as well

I don’t mean this in a bad way but it doesn’t seem believable that your husband is both brilliant and has money, yet seems completely oblivious to what phone he uses. Also sounds as though he works in tech from what you’ve said, which makes it more incomprehensible still

I currently have a pre-order in for the Plus. The reasons are that I don't care about the Pro Max features so I don't want to pay extra for them, but I do want the larger screen and larger battery. In fact, the larger battery will be even more so without the 120fps refresh rate. I don't watch media or play speed games on my phone, so don't care about having a super-fast screen.

I have an iPhone 12 now, which is fast enough for me, so I clearly don't care about having the fastest processor in the west. The iPhone 14 will be faster than the iPhone 12, but chances are I won't notice. However, again, I do want the larger screen and larger battery. Looking forward to getting it, so there you go *smile*.

Really looking forward to this release. Mine was ordered last week, after 14 pro max return (due to its weight). For me the only reasons that make me hesitate are promotion and macro/telephoto cameras, as I’m really happy with 37 less grams and no dynamic island (more intrusive watching content in full screen or 18:9).

Funny thing is Apple has not sent units to reviewers in first days to release all reviews at same time. That way you can give your customers all the information to take decisions between one or another. In this case Apple seems to prefer to launch it some weeks after when early adopters have already spent bigger amount of money in 14 PM.
