This sounds like it will have similar issues as touch screen sliders tend to have: At the moment when you're done adjusting and press the button "hard", you're likely to inadvertedly still move the finger a bit so that it changes the zoom or autofocus.

I’m glad I skipped my normal 2 year upgrade cycle and went from the 12 Pro to the 15 Pro because I can test and run Apple Intelligence while passing on the 16. There are some nice additions like this new button, etc. but the 17 is shaping up to be a more compelling upgrade.

I’ll be excited to see what they are doing with the “Slim” aka “Air” (if recent rumors regarding the name are accurate) and I’m hoping we see more of a design overhaul in some of the other models as well.

If I didn’t have a 15 Pro I’d be feeling the itch to see what Apple Intelligence is all about and there’s almost no way I’d upgrade in back to back years so that would take the 17 off the table.

Having been involved in the early 18.1 developer beta test my advice to those who don’t upgrade every two years would be to pass on buying a 16 just for Apple Intelligence anyway. It both looks and sounds like it’ll be sometime in 2025 before all of the Apple Intelligence features Apple is planning on shipping in iOS 18 will be ready for prime time anyway. At that point the 17 will only be several months away so you might as well wait.

We can already do these things on existing iPhones using the touch screen and/or the volume buttons. Please, Apple, do not add hardware complexity that is redundant and drives up cost to the consumer.

I seriously hope that this is a joke or a false lead rumor to distract from actual product features in development.
Oh, no. This is real. It's redundant, true, and completely unnecessary, but I can tell you a haptic hardware "button" will make it much easier. Some people are willing to pay for that convenience. Nobody is forcing you to buy it. Get a non-pro model.

I think it’s a good idea as long as it’s not too easy to accidentally press. Yes AppleTV Remote side button, I’m looking at you.

A lot of hardware features make sense when viewed in context with the new features in iOS 18. Is there anything which makes heavy use of the camera or anything?

My (at that time) Sony Ericsson K800i had a two-step shutter button like that in 2007!
...and a real flashlight, btw!

The "Action Button" might be the lamest thing Apple has ever done with the iPhone. Totally useless, give me back my ringer switch.

You can already use the volume button to take pictures, we don't need a dedicated button for that. What exactly is the point of all this?

First thing I did when I set up my 15 Pro was to assign ringer on/silence to the Action Button.

You can also press and hold either volume button to take a video capture without having to toggle modes on the screen.

Instead of adding an extra button, why not use the volume up and down buttons for zoom and the action button as the capture button? I think this is unnecessary.
This would at least be a logical use of the existing buttons if it’s that difficult to use the touch screen.

Honestly, if you want the functionality and user experience of a DSLR camera, then buy a DSLR camera…

If Always on Display can be Always on Camera and the screen would always show what is captured on the lens, then this button can be used as an instant camera shot (in other words, skipping a process to open camera app). If that is the purpose, then I think it would be useful.

As a shutter button, that appears to be a little too far up the device. 😅
(Speaking as a Sony phone user with 15 years of experience using such button)

At this rate, our phones will be covered in buttons by the iPhone 19 or so. Just like old Sony devices from the 90s/2000s. How nostalgic!

iPhone 18 is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five buttons ahead of any other mobile phone," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "We are all born with the ultimate pointing device-our fingers-and iPhone uses
all ten of them to create the most revolutionary user interface since the mouse.
You forgot to use the word “delight” inappropriately multiple times as if you just learned English and are working a support call center from Pune.

I had the same thought, if this button also meant the camera could capture instantly (or at least open & ready faster than it currently is), I think this button will be quite successful- no more just missing the moment.
