It would be cool if the menu stuff on the camera would just vanish after a few seconds if the screen isn’t touched. Just make the camera image full screen without the black bars on the sides.

As a photographer who has pretty much used iPhones exclusively for the last 7 to 10 years making photographs, that sounds great and am really looking forward to it.

If it works well, that alone would be worth the upgrade. I'll check it out at the Apple Store when the 16 is released.

The ability to autofocus with a light press on the button will be a gesture that DSLR camera owners are used to, as this is often how you autofocus when using a high-end camera.

As far as I know, half button press autofocus has been around about as long as autofocus itself. Long before the D was in DSLR, and continuing after DSLR has given way to mirrorless. But it is needed for those cameras due to often thin focus plane. With the tiny sensors on an iPhone, other than very close up subjects with distance to the background, almost everything is almost always in focus. It also made sense on cameras with fixed focus points on the focus screen where a half press of the button would focus on whatever was in that point. But with no focus points on iPhone, surely it is easier just to tap the subject.

Apple calls the button the Capture Button internally, and it is going to be one of the most advanced buttons that's been introduced to date…

Now this is rich. Autofocus with a light press is an advanced high-end feature just like it was on my nearly disposable Kodak with autofocus from the 70’s or 80’s. 🙄

Rich? Really?

It's not claimed that's a new feature for cameras in general. Rather, it is for iPhone and perhaps many other mobile phones with cameras.

As a photographer I'm looking forward to it.

With a two-stage shutter button, the iPhone could be a better camera.
But with a headphone jack, the iPhone can fulfill its destiny as the true successor to the iPod!

This actually makes taking photos one handed more cumbersome. And with a physical button, on a device much smaller and lighter than a real camera, you're introducing a lot more camera shake versus a soft touch on the screen with your thumb while the rest of your fingers are stabilising the phone. Not sure about this one.

would turning the camera lens on with dimmed display eat up that much battery?

Yes, because it requires the CPU to be active too, and would require the screen to be constantly updated. Always-on display puts the CPU in a low-power state and refreshes the screen very slowly (maybe 1 update per second, or even once per minute on the Apple Watch) in order to save power.

Shooting one-handed will likely introduce more shake. Much better to use two hands (especially for horizontal framing). Something I always do.

Regarding the upcoming shutter button... If its well positioned and a light touch, I'll be very happy.

So does this replace the "Action" button, or in addition to it? I like the sounds of the extra functionality, but do we really need another new button?!
