I tend to disagree with the majority of members here who think Apple needs to make huge changes to the hardware and software or people are leaving the platform in droves. Have you ever been into an Apple store? Check out the demographics of that group. I’m not saying that everyone in there is technically challenged but a fair number are middle aged or older and many of those folks don’t work with computers every day. They like the simplicity of the platform. They are comfortable with it. They don’t want new challenges. I would think Apple will continue with a known product and make minor modifications so that people don’t leave in search of something easier to use.
I work with the technically challenged almost every day, so I’m just saying…

Yeah, I hope what we have seen thus far is not all there is. However, I have a funny feeling, it is. It's going to be something so stupid that comes out as the next "MMS" BS like last year or something.

You're right. The same crappy screen that was on the 2G was on the 3G. Guess what? That same crappy screen again, was on the 3GS. Yeah, innovative!

To call video editing and cut/copy/paste a "major upgrade" is a joke to say the least. Was it welcomed? Yes. It was SOFTWARE. Nothing "major" about it. Is cut/copy/paste on the iPhone the BEST out there? So far, it is. Still doesn't make it "major" by any stretch. The hardware performance between the 3G and 3GS is different, yes but hardly worth drooling over.

You forget you're talking to someone that had a 3G and now has a 3GS and loves his iPhone. However, I am also not blinded by the BS that Apple peddles to everyone about this and that. I have a brain and use it. I see how Apple works and I see what they have done thus far. I am not impressed anymore. Give me something SUBSTANTIAL! Quit with the minor tid bit bull **** they are doing now by unlocking this, bumping up that a tiny bit or whatever other "magical" words they have to spew.

Apple needs to adjust the way they are doing things and if they don't, people will defect. It's that simple. If you are charging a premium for a product/device, that damn thing better be up to snuff or EXCEED expectations and beyond. Not a simple "rehash" of the last model. Remember, this is the MOBILE world. Things move fast and technology is outdated as quickly as it's discovered. Keep up or GTF OUT!

Care to explain why I still, to this very day CAN NOT change my damn SMS tone to something I want (custom)? Please explain that to me. I would love to hear it. My phone from like 5 years ago that's sitting in my drawer that cost $50 bux does it. You know what else it does? It allows me to change my wallpaper on the front display and inside display. AMAZING isn't it? Yet, my $600 dollar iPhone does not have that feature (not fully anyways).

I love iTunes and the central location it provides me for syncing and backing up. I like it for housing my digital copies I get with my blu-ray's. I like it for my music, apps and the like. It helps keep me in love with my iPhone. However, I also realize - I can get an iPod Touch. Cheap. Updates or not, no sense paying a premium for something that isn't.

Those that realize that Apple is a business and they are in it to make money - they are the wisest of folks. Those that are oblivious sheep - will always end up sheared. Apple is a defiant company. They resist change and do so ONLY when outcry is great enough to do so or they can no longer justify it.

Example - the damn mighty mouse. That one click POS. Whats out now? Another POS mouse. Apple doesn't learn.

Perhaps my previous post was a bit harsh so I'll treat you with a little more civility and as if you have more sense than I previously gave you credit for. With that said let's walk through your post and I'll try to explain reality of the situation at least as I've seen it in my 12+ years in the technology field.

1. You're right. The same crappy screen that was on the 2G was on the 3G. Guess what? That same crappy screen again, was on the 3GS. Yeah, innovative!

ANSWER: At the time that the phones came out they weren't 'crappy screens' they were still pretty much industry standard specs for screens with only a few phones in this sector being an exception. At this point you're basing a screen that came out 1 - 2 years ago with the industry standard of today... That's not a sensible comparison mate. Also you explain how the screen was not innovative yet you don't look at the fact that the development and success of the iPhone caused the capacitive screen boom in the mobile phone market. Also along the lines of innovative, the development at success of the iPhone caused the MULTITOUCH capacitive screen boom with finger based gestures. So while the resolution of the screen wasn't innovative, the technology the developed and used behind the in the screen certainly was. Notice I didn't say they came up with these ideas, I just said that their innovation was the design and implementation of these ideas in a mass consumer product. There are a lot more innovations in the iPhone but I'll limit this response to the screen since this 'gripe' was about the screen.

ANSWER: I'm not sure why you're under the impression that software can't be considered a major upgrade. If that is your mindset then I hate to say it but you won't be happy on any platform. Most android phones since inception have been the same hardware wise except for adding or removing a physical keyboard the Nexus One was the first real 'huge' hardware bump they say but I would still consider some other Android phones major upgrades that came out before the Nexus One. With that being said the performance between 3G and 3GS was stellar. I don't know what nature of apps you use/have used so I can't speak to your experience but I have several very intensive apps graphically or data intensive that not only loaded at least 50% faster but performed much better once the app was launched. Literraly some apps that took 40 seconds some time to load on mine and others 3G's, took 10 or less on the 3GS.
On the OS level video editing front this might not seem like much of a major upgrade or innovation until you take a video in an Android device or Windows Mobile device then try to send that video as an MMS only to realize you can't. On both of those platforms you have to specifically take an "MMS VIDEO" to be able to send it at MMS. This means if you want to take a video and have a high quality version but also share it with your friends, you can't... not out of the box anyway. You have to either remember to set your phone to MMS before you shoot and settle with the crappy quality of the MMS video OR take a higher quality video without being able to share it. On the iPhone you can take a video at the max quality and when you want to share it, you get the option to edit it and then it also converts it to MMS for you automatically. On the other platforms when you take video at a higher quality and try to send, you hit a brick wall in the form of an error "this video is too large to be sent" and then no other recourse is offered. So while this might not seem like a 'big deal' on the surface and it's something that 'OMG Apple is so stubborn they should have put this in a long time ago' I appreciate them taking extra time to do something until they can do it "right" (which is subjective of course) or at least do it in a way that makes sense from a usability stand point. I'll tell you this, when it wasn't there I didn't really care and didn't miss it but when it got there it was a welcome addition because it made functional sense. Call a major update or innovation or don't label it at all, but I like it when it works WELL; not just works. On the same vain cut/copy/paste that is a system wide implementation seems like a small thing until you get your Droid Incredible (like I did) and first realize that HTC's new cut/copy/paste implementation is strikingly similar to what Apple did with theirs (actually it's identical) but THEN realize it's not system wide so with 5 different apps their could be several different implementations of cut/copy/paste so in each app you have to figure out how each individual developer implemented it which is annoying when you just want to get something done.

ANSWER: Exactly how I feel about the usability of other platforms. Except hardware doesn't give me a hard-on and I don't consider hardware a reason for something to be a premium product. I consider performance a premium aspect of a product and hardware DOES NOT equal performance.... See the above to examples and let me know if you need more because there are plenty. Adding 'feature' upon 'feature' without any thought into usability of these features really doesn't amount to keep up... Anyone can throw the kitchen sink at something. Companies that make good products make sure that faucets on the sinks actually work first. If android chose to make the next update about fixing bugs and usability as well as fixing the market and other aspects that are just UNACCEPTABLE with products from a company like Google instead of just adding features, I would commend them for it and be excited about their new products much more than I am now.

ANSWER: No explanation for this. You're right. Apple dropped the ball here. I can say that, I can do this on my phone since it's Jailbroken, there are also apps out there that you can use with even non Jailbroken iPhones that will add custom sounds to your library. HOWEVER this is no excuse and Apple should fix this. For me it's not a big deal so it goes into my 'Some functionality of other platforms you have to Jailbreak an iPhone to get and some functionality of iPhones you have to root other platforms to get so meh' category.

5. Those that realize that Apple is a business and they are in it to make money - they are the wisest of folks. Those that are oblivious sheep - will always end up sheared. Apple is a defiant company. They resist change and do so ONLY when outcry is great enough to do so or they can no longer justify it.

ANSWER: They don't resist until there is outcry. The resist until they cane figure out a way for it to functionally make sense. There is a difference. Sometimes they wait too long on some of this stuff I do agree and I think that is a part of the business model. I don't think it takes them a long time to make a lot of features functionally make sense but if those features aren't completed in time for this release they wait until next years release to actually release it instead of releasing it (whatever the new feature is) in the middle of the year or throughout the year even if it's a minor change. That is annoying to me... but I'm willing to endure it because my other option is another platform where I could be waiting for years for something simple and functionally appropriate to be corrected but it never comes (see previous examples).

6. Example - the damn mighty mouse. That one click POS. Whats out now? Another POS mouse. Apple doesn't learn.

ANSWER: You must be one of those people who listens to off the wall articles written by people who've never used a Mac but then they regurgitate their ignorance in the form of 'perceived informed journalism'. I say this because there have been many articles written about the ones mouse button thing even though the fact of the matter is Apple mice for the last 7 years have had two buttons... They are designed with a unibody form but if you click the right and left side you do get a right click and a left click respectively.

In conclusion, I'm not a sheep; I'm a realist. My bread and butter for the last 12 years has been and will continue to be Windows with a little Linux mixed in (I'm an IT project manager for one of the larges government agencies in the US). This gives me the opportunity to use all platforms daily and create an actual real world informed opinion on things based on not only what I experience but other users in my organization that I support.

The A8 does not come with the ram and the A4 is not a CPU. It's an SoC (system on chip) just like the Snapdragon and one of the things on it is the CPU so the RAM and CPU components of the A4 can be chosen independently by Apple when they design it.

You know what I meant....thanks for the lesson though.

That's interesting. Most of the patrons of the Mac stores around here are Mid 20's to 30's and more of the creative type (music, movies, or graphics). What area are you in? I see most older folks using Dell's and the like... I'm not sure where people are getting that Apple products are for the technically non-saavy. I'm not sure if that's true, it seems more like an answer that some Tech Savvy non Apple users came up with because they couldn't justify why another tech savvy person would have a different opinion than they did.
If you look at the categories of apps and specific apps that make the most sales in the App store it would refute the whole notion that most Apple users are dumb when it comes to technology.

@itpromike,

Your're probably spot on with regard to the average Mac user, however it looks like about half of Iphone users are over 35. I was going by my own experience and although I do know some IT professionals who are avid Iphone users, I also know some who are not tech-savvy at all.

Here are the age demographics of Iphone users:

13-17 : 5%
18-24 : 13%
25-34 : 29%
35-54 : 36%
55 + : 17%

There are actually more Iphone users over the age of 55 than between the ages of 18-24.

Very well put.

And I'll be first in line although, I don't see a 512GB module being used.

Jobs told us how this fills the void between a smart phone and a notebook. Would be really ****ed up if apps wouldn't run on the iPad becasue of insufficient RAM.

I can say, with 100% certainty, the iPhone 4 will not have a 512 GB RAM module.

;)

;)

I wouldn't doubt that it would release with 512 actually. You guys are so fixated on hardware and I personally don't get it. Does it just make you feel better to know that something has more or less RAM than something else? Bridging the gap between phone and notebook has nothing to do with RAM directly. It has to do with performance and user experience over that of a netbook when actually using the iPad and it already does that with flying colors. It has to do with battery life over net/notebook for the heavy usage and it also already does that with flying colors. The things that really matter with 'bridging the gap' are speed, reliability, battery life, ecosystem, and a screen large enough to really take advantage of the SDK with the creativity of the Devs and the iPad is doing all of those things phenomenally. The iPhone having more RAM wouldn't change that fact. It might change the warm and fuzzy you get from your iPad and if that's the case you need to look at reality of what the product already does and has the potential to due in the future based on what it already does rather than some arbitrary numbers on a piece of paper.

1 - Yes, the response was about the screen, innovative or not - the 3GS should have had a better screen. Instead it was released with the same old screen. It wouldn't have been bad if the quality control was better but if you do some searching, the 3GS' screen was and still is horrible. Yellow tint, mustard yellow, off whites, variations from white to pee yellow. It's sad that a company like Apple can do no better. What's even worse, quite a few people ACCEPTED it and made excuses for Apple even though the product they had was inferior. It was defective from the start. Why on earth anyone would justify that as a PRO and not a CON is beyond me. Anyways, the 4G will be the truth teller for Apple. I hope they do it right.

2 - Software can be considered a major upgrade when it justifies it's justified as such. MMS and video editing was an upgrade but it was NOT a major upgrade. Let me rephrase that, for the iPhone it was a "major upgrade". For everyone else, it was pretty petty. Again because even my stupid phone from 5 years ago already had this capability. Apple brought it out, shined it up a little and made it seem brand spanking new! It wasn't. MMS is a joke on any level. I don't care if the iPhone automatically adjusts video so you can send it to email or MMS. MMS video is worthless. Pure junk. So please, don't use that as a PRO. It's a con. Maybe 5 years ago it was good at the time. Late last year when it was finally released on the iPhone - joke. We live in an HD world. At least I do. YOU might accept a crappy modible phone video sent through MMS as good, I find it appalling and a waste of time. I upload to Youtube, Vimeo, Flickr or I wait to do something else when I get home. Even sending an MMS picture is junk. Email it or upload it to Flickr or somewhere else. Much better quality. Please don't rationalize Apples introduction of MMS as something great or even worthy. It was several years too late and junk. Cut copy and paste - I won't go there. The iPhone wins hands down. Was it worth the wait? Yes.

3 - So you are fine with paying a premium for hardware that is 4 years old as long as it looks good and performs just fine? Even though a new device with current hardware that performs better, faster and looks just as good is the same price? Are you serious? Hardware isn't everything but it is half the package. Software is the other half. You can slice it and dice it any way you want. You can't have one without the other. I don't want a POS device that's outdated before it's even released. Give me something WORTHY of the Apple name and for what I pay, otherwise I will go elsewhere. It's all about quality, substance, performance and value.

4 - Yeah, no explanation needed because it's getting absurd. Out of the gate 2G, no customization of SMS tones. 3G, same thing. The all new and improved 3GS, still no customized SMS tones. How nice. A $700 dollar device that looks and sounds just like all the other ones in the room. Talk about irony. Where did "think different" go? More like "sheep me". Jailbreaking is not a solution.

5 - They do resist change. They change only when they see fit or if the outcry is great enough. Don't kid yourself.

6 - I have used several iterations of Apples mice and I am well aware that the Mighty Mouse has a "right click" option. It's not on by default and it's not a physical button at all. You have to manually turn it on and it's awkward at best. So is the stupid track ball thingy on top of it. So was the one button mouse way before. The new mouse is even worse. It's like Apple wants to create works of art and they don't care how "practical" they are as long as it looks good. I don't regurgitate anything and I base my info off what I HAVE EXPERIENCED and some of what I have read. So you don't need to insinuate I know nothing.

Sounds like were pretty much in the same boat. Albeit we might not agree. I have 15 years of IT experience so I am not talking from my ass like some on the forums usually do.

Notice the wink. I think GFLPraxis is trying to hint to the fact that there is no "RAM module". The A8 chip is a SOC, a processor and RAM in a single package.

LOL, you missed the point. He pointed out how the quoted poster typed GB instead of MB. :p

1. You're funny. You're comment about the screen was a snarky "how innovative" then when it's presented factually that it was innovative, innovation is suddenly a non-issue. Convenience is fun in arguments :)
By todays standards the screen is crappy yes. 3 years ago it was industry standard; that simple... If you want to talk about Quality Assurance let's talk about the Nexus One with it's color bleeding, color blending, over saturated, cyan tinted White screen as well as it's 3g antenna problems. I've never seen a capacitive touch screen that sold/manufactured more than 2+ Million devices without having a forum dedicated somewhere with unhappy customers because a few thousand units had some issues. I've worked in manufacturing environments so I know it happens. At any rate it sucks when it happens I agree with that. BTW I've not seen the problem reports on the 3GS screen, can you link it to me?

2. So your 5 year old phone does something that no Windows Mobile or Android phone does out of the box eh? Nice... Microsoft and Google should be ashamed. I made no comments about how MMS quality was good so your comments assuming as such are terribly misdirected. My comments were purely stated that when Apple adds features, it adds them with usability and functionality in mind. Not just adding them for the sake of adding them. Whatever your thoughts and/or feelings on whether these features are personally used or viewed as valuable to you, it does not negate the core principal of my statements and the sentiments they present. There is no arguing that mate. By the way when the 3GS came out not many other WinMO or Android phones shot HD video... matter of fact I'm not sure if any did. A few nokias did but still HD video shooting wasn't industry standard. Why are consistently holding this one company to a standard you don't hold any other company to? Or are you on other platforms threads complaining about how their industry standard hardware should be better as well?

3. Do you listen to yourself? Yes I'm content with my older device even though a NEW device comes out AFTER my device that has better features and more horsepower... Isn't that the way the industry works? Your statement is totally nonsensical. Would I be happy paying a premium price when at the time it came out it was considered premium quality? Sure. Would I pay it when it was no longer considered premium? Of course not. You are still comparing the mobile phone technology standards of 1.5 years ago to todays standards which are leagues different. Are you kidding me? You seriously don't see the fallacy in that? That's like saying a BWM from 5 years ago is crap because it's not better than the ones that are out now... well duh the ones that are out now SHOULD be better than something that came out before it... So you're telling me that software doesn't matter if the hardware isn't there as well no matter what role they play in actual REAL PERFORMANCE? So if you had a phone with newer hardware but another phone with older hardware that had better optimized software performed leagues better than yours, you would stick with the hardware because that's really what matters? I don't care whether it's hardware or software based... REAL PERFORMANCE for tasks that people do everyday is what counts when buying consumer devices. That simple. With your logic, I'd buy a Ferrari to commute to and from work everyday. Hey I can only go 40 MPH between my house and work but at least I have a Ferrari... right? Also what Apple premium price are you talking about? You're paying $199 for the phone just like you would with any other comparable phone give or take 20 bucks.

4. If jailbreaking is not a solution then creating gold cards and rooting your phone is not. In which case no matter what lack of feature your speak of, all platforms are in the same boat. WinMo and Android need rooting and to be flashed to better ROMS and iPhones need jailbreaking which is BTW in case you weren't aware the exact same thing as flashing to a new ROM on other platforms. What device did you have before this one? Have you ever used a WinMo or Android device? A lot of these issues that you have are present on all platforms so if you didn't have this phone, where would you go? If not having a customizable SMS sound on your phone makes a person a sheep then what are you? No matter what platform you go to mate you're going to have to make due without some features that another platform has. It's just that simple. The question then becomes which features are you OK to do without. No one platform or one phone will have every feature of every phone. Doesn't happen that way. These are not excuses this is just reality. If you are that fed up why don't you try another platform and see if the features you gain are worth the ones you lose in the process. For me the answer is no (well sort of, I have both phones but I couldn't use my other phone as my only phone or it would drive me crazy. However my iPhone would be find as my only phone).

5. You've already said yourself that you're new to Apple so let me tell you to stop kidding yourself. I've seen Apple over the years deny features until they figured out a way to make it usable. It's there MO. It has nothing to do with being stubborn. If it was any other way they would be like every other company out there that throw in features for the hell of it... They wouldn't have nearly the sales and position in the market that they do now because they would be a regurgitation of of every other company.

6. They have crappy mice, so sue them. LOL. I've never liked their mice and they are not a mouse company. I can name a handful of other companies that don't have mice to my liking, should we muddy their forums with posts stating as such? No it's not on by default, but you do get the option. I know a lot of people who don't use the option and who don't like the two button thing. Sounds silly even to me but they know what their customers want so they give them the choice... At least appreciate the fact that they brought the mouse to the market to begin with. Or else computers would suck nowadays lol. Now I'm just having fun (although they were the first company to introduce a mouse based OS).

Arguing with you is fun. :D

Actually it's not fun at all. Rather, it's a waste of time. I don't mind making lengthy posts every now and then when they are deserved but clearly, it would not be worth it at this point.

From what I read, you are just looking to disagree, which is fine. I just prefer not to play along anymore. I already said what I needed and that pretty much is it. :)

Making excuses for Apple is not something I will do. You can if you want. :apple:

Well they got the 512mb right, I don't know about the other stuff.
