I'm quite happy with the way my iPad performs as it is. Not sure that more ram at this point would be much help...

Nope, it's called technology. I bet the 2nd gen will be cooler, but then I'll be mad that the 3rd gen will blow it out of the water.

I agree that technology moves forward at an alarming rate but it seems a little ridiculous that a brand new device, which could really use that extra ram, would be limited in the fashion that it is. Maybe it is Apple's game as they may release the iPad HD or iPad (S) by Christmas with the newer / upgraded features in an effort to suck more money out of my wallet.... And they are pretty good at doing it.

Lol, how long have you known Apple? That's their MO: slow, annual (on average) updates to their product line

A good thing about their frequent updates is that their products are usually very good at retaining their resale value, for those who would like to be early adopters yet update yearly

Edit: regardless, as of right now, the 512 is just a rumor. We won't know until WWDC or later what the real specs are

Would not bother me. I'm not a technical person but would the iPhone HD make use of the extra ram in things like editing higher quality video, video calls etc if these features where to be announced?

Would it really make a difference for web surfing or playing games?

Actually, iPhone has a greater need for RAM than iPad, because it is more mobile. More need for background apps, particularly location-aware ones. So, this doesn't bother me. As well, it's just a rumor.

There SHOULDN'T be a lot of iPhone apps for this new phone that won't run on iPad. If there are, the developers are incompetent. They'd be cutting-out older iPhones as well. And, in almost all cases, it would be the result of sloppy work, not need.

Apple is going to have to work hard to reign-in developers and convince them not to treat iPhone as a desktop computer, if the rumor is true.

I was just watching jeopardy and the $200 question for "tech-tonics" category was this CEO announced his latest creation the iPad? I was so happy i was like Steve jobs AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:apple:

Good point. The first gen iPad doesn't have a camera (or two) for video capture and suchlike.

^ That is correct. As this thread is a regurgitation of thoughts already expressed in other threads, that is the collective consensus that multitasking will truly benefit from more ram. Where I worry is that the larger apps on the iPad and the presumed upcoming multitasking in the fall will result in a combined failure of the iPad OS overall.

But the iPhone has such a small screen I prefer the iPad over the iPhone anyday

i doubt it will have more, tho, it would be nice. also it does seem like the ipad release was close enough that it should have had 512mb

does anyone know what processor or memory the iphone that was lost in the bar had? i've looked but cant find it anywhere.
in my opinion if they were testing it outside of apple HQ 2 months before release, then this is the exact one that going to be released, just my opinion.

There was a lot of backlash when people found out the iPad only has 256 mbs of ram. This was back in Jan.

It's quite possible that Apple, seeing the backlash, decided to upgrade their iPhone HD (and subsequent prototypes) to 512 after that point.

Ram is cheap, it costs a couple of dollars, which is chump change on a device Apple plans to charge ATT $700 for.

No, it was covered with a metal heat shield that they were too afraid to remove. It was labeled DVT or "Design Verification Test" which is the last step before PVT or "Production Verification Test". So it was mostly likely very close to final.

We're not talking about standalone RAM chips here, the RAM is actually onboard the processor. So it all depends on which version of the Cortex A8 they use. Wondering if the Apple A4 has a 512MB version.

Where was I when they announced it would be $700 with AT&T?
