I'm starting to no longer like Apple or the iPhone. Even after owning the 3G and my now current, 3GS.

This yearly "rehash" of the same phone, with newer software and "features" is becoming a joke. I want PERFORMANCE and HARDWARE updates that actually MEAN something. Stuff that is worth my hard earned $500-$700 dollars. This perpetual cycle of bits and pieces is becoming tiresome.

I love my iPhone but I will NOT be party to yet another lack luster phone from Apple. It needs to be MAJOR. Not another 3G(S) BS move.

Where was I when they announced it would be $700 with AT&T?

He said that's what Apple would charge AT&T, not how much it will cost a consumer with a 2-year contract. This does not seem an unreasonable estimate, since that's about the retail cost of an iPhone 3GS 32GB. Believe it or not, Apple charges AT&T nearly retail for iPhones (they get a $50 discount on phones they actually sell in an AT&T retail store or online). The current iPhone 3GS 32GB, for example costs $699 retail (contract-free). AT&T buys them from Apple for $649 and sells them for $299 with a contract or $699 contract-free. When someone buys a subsidized iPhone at the Apple store, they pay Apple $299 and AT&T pays Apple $400.

No matter where it's purchased, Apple gets $650 to $700 for each iPhone.

If it has a far higher resolution screen it is a MAJOR update.

If it has a far higher resolution screen it is a MAJOR update.

That would be a refresh.

MAJOR update is physical appearance has changed, screen changed, internals changed, CPU/RAM changed, so on so forth.

From what I have seen, it appears to be a MAJOR overhaul. However, there are some specifics still unknown. So it could swing either way right now. Nothing is known for sure.

wish they could just get rid of that ugly top/bottom black bar and make the screen a little bigger.. how about this for commercial...

A4 Processor
4th Generation
4.0 IPS screen
4.0 software

iPhone 4

I'm hoping for a better GPS chip...to get rid of the GPS lag.

Qualcomm chips in all my previous winmobile phones where brilliant...no lag at all.

Wasn't there a rumor qualcomm where going to provide chips for the iphone?

Finally someone who is on the same page as me and who see's the (real) light! The jig is up Apple you can't continue to pull the same old tricks. Soon they're gonna be basically handing market share to Android, minus the die hard Apple fanboys who are still trying to justify C2D on a MBP.

Now come on. There are plenty of things that Apple can justly be criticized for, but that's just not one of them. Have you seen a teardown of the 13" MBP? There is simply not room enough for both a dedicated graphics chip and an i7 processor on the mainboard. Having experienced built-in Apple graphics, I think they made the right decision to go with nVidia graphics chip.

Excellent post especially about the c2d in the pro laptops.

I think the new iPhone might actually be a major upgrade but the problem is the 4.0 software is lacking and the other phone manufacturers are really stepping up their efforts.

Android is getting better and better and they seem to update their software much quicker than apple. Hopefully this pushes Apple but I doubt it will do much to change the way they do things.

Lol, wasn't C2D like 4 years ago? Maybe even longer?

I love the iPhone and I don't think I will ever stop saying that. However again, as most are saying -Apple needs to step it up quite a bit. I do have a funny feeling though they are going to come up with an excuse as to why they don't need to. I have only been an iPhone user for 2 years and nothing more from Apple. Even I can see how Apple works and the excuses they come up with as some sort of newfangled way to do stuff. Blah.

If they want to EXCEL and be the best - they HAVE TO get better and give the public something worthy. Not these half ass software bumps called new phones every year. If they want to coast along and survive, then they can just keep doing what they want and most will look elsewhere.

512MB? WOW! That's like twice if that in the iPad and almost as much as in some Android phones on the market already!

As it goes, Europe will see iPad-beating performance in an Apple smartphone sooner than an actual 3G iPad.

It IS possible that we have not even seen the whole 4.0 software experience. I think it's possible that their might be totally new features that only the next gen iPhone will debut and use. Steve didn't say no to widgets when he was asked about it. We could be looking at a bump in res, an HD camera, faster processor, more ram, and of course front facing camera.

Every year we have seen new apps that have come out for the new phone. I think this year we could see not only exclusive apps but exclusive functionality.

I think it's very probable that they are withholding some feature/s in OS 4 for WWDC.

So hardware equals performance to you? If so you should probably go with Android. All android is, is a basical rehashing of the same hardware just designed differently by different manufacturers... The only different with Apple is that 2 years in a row they made hardware that looked the same. The hardware didn't perform the same by any stretch of the imagination but it did look the same. I would call a 50+% boost in performance a major upgrade. I would call video editing built into the phone it self a major upgrade. I would call a system wide cut, copy, and paste which is thus far the best implemented in the industry a major upgrade. So if you're tired of it then by all means choose a different platform. Go with Android which basically is a rehashing of the Android OS with a bunch of different vendor specific add-ons which really do nothing for the day to day functionality. Oh and by the way I'll enjoy having my phone updated each year like clock work to the newest version of the OS regardless of if I buy the new hardware or not. Good luck with your Android and picking the right unit that you know the vendor will upgrade quickly when the new OS comes out. As it stands now, 2.2 Froyo is coming out and my 1.6 Hero still doesn't have an official 2.1 update yet. Have fun with that bud.

Ya know... you're right, they definitely aren't profitable yet. They definitely haven't outsold their products each quarter more than the last. They definitely haven't had any success in the phone market yet. You're right, if they keep this up the company will go under because as it stands now they are only a few moments away from bankruptcy... no one buys their products anyway. LOL

And you're right, they definitely need to change if they want to Excel. It's not like they have had a phone for the last two years that everyone has been comparing other phones to and JUST as of late (like this year) have phones been released that outperform it with web browsing and speed performance.
And it's not like you're not comparing current best efforts from other vendors THIS year to Apples efforts from 1 and 2 years ago... This is fun. Say some more things that make sense. I love your logic ;)

He talks about software and then says he wants performance and hardware..aka software and hardware. Then you suggest he goes with Android along with berating him as if he took you up on your suggestion already. I LIKE YOUR STYLE! :D uhhh

Have you not seen the phone yet? The physical has changed, the hardware has changed, and the OS has changed... not sure what else you need to make it a major update... Also not all MBP's have C2D's... not sure where you've been. You've probably been on that submarine that's plunged into the ocean of misinformation that everyone seems to be riding around here. Just hardware gives you the warm and fuzziez as a techie... hardware PLUS software give you real performance as a person who actually cares more what I can actually do with my device in a seamless workflow rather than how many numbers I can boast about to my geek friends. I'm glad Apple makes devices for the later not the former.

BTW the legal problems between Intel and Nvidia had Apple stuck in limbo with the C2D's. Facts are fun in discussions too :)

Let's hope that all we've seen speculated is not all there is.

Yeah, I hope what we have seen thus far is not all there is. However, I have a funny feeling, it is. It's going to be something so stupid that comes out as the next "MMS" BS like last year or something.

You're right. The same crappy screen that was on the 2G was on the 3G. Guess what? That same crappy screen again, was on the 3GS. Yeah, innovative!

To call video editing and cut/copy/paste a "major upgrade" is a joke to say the least. Was it welcomed? Yes. It was SOFTWARE. Nothing "major" about it. Is cut/copy/paste on the iPhone the BEST out there? So far, it is. Still doesn't make it "major" by any stretch. The hardware performance between the 3G and 3GS is different, yes but hardly worth drooling over.

You forget you're talking to someone that had a 3G and now has a 3GS and loves his iPhone. However, I am also not blinded by the BS that Apple peddles to everyone about this and that. I have a brain and use it. I see how Apple works and I see what they have done thus far. I am not impressed anymore. Give me something SUBSTANTIAL! Quit with the minor tid bit bull **** they are doing now by unlocking this, bumping up that a tiny bit or whatever other "magical" words they have to spew.

Apple needs to adjust the way they are doing things and if they don't, people will defect. It's that simple. If you are charging a premium for a product/device, that damn thing better be up to snuff or EXCEED expectations and beyond. Not a simple "rehash" of the last model. Remember, this is the MOBILE world. Things move fast and technology is outdated as quickly as it's discovered. Keep up or GTF OUT!

Care to explain why I still, to this very day CAN NOT change my damn SMS tone to something I want (custom)? Please explain that to me. I would love to hear it. My phone from like 5 years ago that's sitting in my drawer that cost $50 bux does it. You know what else it does? It allows me to change my wallpaper on the front display and inside display. AMAZING isn't it? Yet, my $600 dollar iPhone does not have that feature (not fully anyways).

I love iTunes and the central location it provides me for syncing and backing up. I like it for housing my digital copies I get with my blu-ray's. I like it for my music, apps and the like. It helps keep me in love with my iPhone. However, I also realize - I can get an iPod Touch. Cheap. Updates or not, no sense paying a premium for something that isn't.

Those that realize that Apple is a business and they are in it to make money - they are the wisest of folks. Those that are oblivious sheep - will always end up sheared. Apple is a defiant company. They resist change and do so ONLY when outcry is great enough to do so or they can no longer justify it.

Example - the damn mighty mouse. That one click POS. Whats out now? Another POS mouse. Apple doesn't learn.

.

I will venture to explain why.

Because you CAN'T! Doh! Now go back to your 5-year-old phone and happy surfing!

Now seriously, Jailbreaking takes all of 30 seconds of reserch and execution, has no side effects, does not void warranty, and will allow you to customize the crap out of your iphone.

Or if you're too scared you can choose to wait one more month for OS4 which will have these basic customization features.

We're not talking about standalone RAM chips here, the RAM is actually onboard the processor. So it all depends on which version of the Cortex A8 they use. Wondering if the Apple A4 has a 512MB version.

The A8 does not come with the ram and the A4 is not a CPU. It's an SoC (system on chip) just like the Snapdragon and one of the things on it is the CPU so the RAM and CPU components of the A4 can be chosen independently by Apple when they design it.

Whatever the case, I'm short an iPhone till gen 5

I've moved at just the right times to secure my place anywhere but where I can legally get an iPhone. The 4G will be a great device I'm sure, and better than 100% of the phones here in Korea, but as a foreigner, I won't be able to purchase one.

The ram, processor, and screen are sure to be nice updates, ones I hope to see some day. Enjoy them for what it's worth. Oh yes, take snappies with the front-mounted cam cam!

Can you tell us exactly what you want from an upgrade?

HD will have:

A significantly better CPU
Supposedly twice the RAM
An Updated camera 5MP with flash / 720p recording
A front camera
Hopefully 64GB storage
Twice the screen resolution
Bigger battery

Is that not good enough? I mean, they could upgrade the GPU to something like SGX540/543, they could also change the screen to AMOLED but that would not be good in the sunlight, but what else?

You constantly mention "major upgrade" what is the major upgrade for you?
