This is one article I could find, read the display section...

http://www.mobile-review.com/print.php?filename=/review/samsung-galaxy-s2-en.shtml

I distinctly remember there being more more articles about this when Galaxy S II was coming.

4.27 was the smallest AMOLED display they could produce with RBG.

It's probably the same the HD AMOLED RBG, 4.8" was the smallest they could manufacture with 720p resolution.

It's a 720p 4.8" screen, unless they pulled out some magic.

What's the point of 2048x1536 on a 9.7" iPad screen?

The point of that is to exactly double current iPad resoution, thus not requiring application rewrite (since, IMO, Apple didn't think ahead about the importance of resolution scaling in apps). It's not being done to "beat" the 1080p standard, although I am sure a lot of clueless fans will be spouting the standard gibberish: "my iPad is better than your plasma screen".

I'll never buy a Samsung phone again. If I leave my Iphone it will be for one of the upcoming HTC phones. The HTC One looks pretty nice. Just saying

I don't find the iPhone 4s battery to be all that. However best thing about it is it seems like no matter where I go I'm surrounded by iPhone chargers.

I had a few friend partying at my house a few weeks ago and including my ps3 I had 6 chargers for most everyone's phone. Popularity makes it very convenient.

And if you do travel and forget the charger you can find one anywhere ASAP. I've bought two in airports over the years.

I agree with this, to an extent, but it's not like a micro usb charger is hard to find. Anyone that has a bluetooth headset, android device, or various other peripherals is likely to have one laying around. Apples proprietary doc connector has certainly become very popular, but you can still find the others just as easily, or perhaps slightly less.

I'd also like to see actual sales numbers. A lot of these companies report devices sales to retailers... not the numbers in customer's hands.

Apple does the same.

Yes, part of what Apple reports are indeed sales to end users, at least when the sale is through an Apple online or brick store.

However, Apple also reports shipments to resellers and carriers as sales, just like everyone else.

As a side note, returns from resellers are accounted for differently and do not count against gross sales revenues.

This is all noted in their Security and Exchange Commission filings.

I'm curious about this ceramic case. Anyone have any info on ceramic cased stuff or any ceramic tech? Google doesn't turn up an awful lot at least anything I'm finding helpful. Sounds interesting.

I love questions like this.

Here's an old December 2006 article about a patent application Apple made for a ceramic radio transparent slotted enclosure.

Note that the author thought it might be intended for an "iPhone", which had NOT yet been publicly revealed at the time.

May I ask what your last Samsung device was? I shared your opinion up until the galaxy line. I felt their phones were cheaply made, lacked support, and weren't that good. They have come a VERY long way over the last 2-3 years IMO.

How can I b the only guy laughing at this?

I understand that it is exactly double, but he is saying that 1080p is pointless on a 4.8” screen. If so, then 2048x1536 is also equally as pointless on a 9.7” screen, as nothing is in "1536p.” But, they both have their benefits. Text will look amazing on both screens, and I would love a 1080p phone (as well as a “1536p” iPad.)

Not really the info I'm looking for. Curious more about the type of ceramic used for durability.

Per the definition of case, ceramic cases have been around forever, Ming dynasty comes to mind. :)

Read the patent. It gives examples, such as:

[0069] The main body 54 may be formed from a variety of extrudable materials or material combinations including but not limited to metals, metal alloys, plastics, ceramics and/or the like. By way of example, the metals may correspond to aluminum, titanium, steel, copper, etc., the plastic materials may correspond to polycarbonate, ABS, nylon, etc, and the ceramic materials may correspond to alumina, zirconia, etc. Zirconia may for example correspond to zirconia oxide.

...

0134] The base material of zirconia is zirconium oxide. Zirconia may also include a variety of other components as for example yttrium oxide, chromium oxide, aluminum oxide, hafnium oxide, and/or the like. In one example, the composition of black zirconia comprises greater than or equal to 89% ZrO.sub.2 (zirconium oxide), less than or equal to 7% Y.sub.2O.sub.3 (yttrium oxide), less than or equal to 3% Cr.sub.2O.sub.3 (chromium oxide), and less than or equal to 3% Al.sub.2O.sub.3 (aluminum oxide). In another example, the composition of white zirconia comprises greater than or equal to 93% ZrO.sub.2 (zirconium oxide), less than or equal to 7% Y.sub.2O.sub.3 (yttrium oxide), and less than or equal to 1% Al.sub.2O.sub.3 (aluminum oxide). In each of these examples, the composition may also include 1-2% Hf0.sub.2 (hafnium oxide).

Until they make it out of quality materials, and it doesn't fee like it is going to fall apart, count me out.

Feature wise, for me, the iphone is plenty. It just FEELS so much better in your hands to hold and use.

Galaxy S2 was my last phone. I know your going to tell me that the nexus is better because it's pure android. Ok I'll probably agree with you there but the antennas in samsung suck. Their reception is not as strong as my iphone or my last HTC phone. That was a big let down for me. Where I used to never roam I would roam with my sammy. Where I used to have wifi I wouldn't with my sammy.

Read the patent. It gives examples, such as:

Yep, I read that. Curious more about the actual s3 not a generic apple patent. I should have said that but the s3 was the topic so just assumed we were sticking with that.

......The iPhone's lackluster 4S upgrade put's Apple in an even worse spot than before.

I can never get this argument. How can people honestly make this argument? Is it simply because they didn't change the chassis? If the same guts were in a new frame would it be worth a "good" upgrade?

I'm not a fan of other phone platforms but it's nice to see other phones out there pushing the bar up and up. That means apple will have to do the same.

No. I did try the latest iteration on a Moto Xoom tablet and still thought it was a discombobulated mess **** of an OS. I think ICS might be a flashier iteration of a discombobulated **** mess of an OS too.

Oh I agree 100%. Android on tablets is just not very user-friendly for many of us. My dad got a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for Christmas and it is just not as fluid and easy to use as my friend's iPad.

However, my friend got a Galaxy Nexus, and ICS is very polished. It's beautiful and honestly made me want to switch over. I think one reason why I really liked it is that there wasn't any skin over it, like TouchWiz or MotoBlur or anything. Obviously we'll see how it is on other Android phones in the future.

Just my 2 cents.

OK but we don't walk around with TV's all day. 4.8 inches is a bit ridiculous. I have no problems with the size of the iphone screen.

If anybody thinks Apple will have a 4.5 inch screen or higher they are in for a rude awakening. Maybe, just maybe they will bump it up a bit but it wont be one of these huge phablets.

I agree, one thing i find that makes the iPhone appealing to me is I can use it with one hand easily. a 4.8 I think I'd drop alot if I tried to use it with one hand.

the most a screen size should be on a smartphone is 4", how can Sammy make such huge screens, come on this is like carrying a small HDTV around.

Not talking to me, but I used to have a Samsung Focus. It was about as well made as a Dell Inspiron laptop. I could bend it and flex it like a thick magazine or something. And every single farking time I dropped it (the Focus) the battery cover would pop off, sending the battery one way, the battery cover the exact opposite way, and the phone seemingly the complete opposite way of the battery and the battery cover. Cheap flimsy crap.

Unless Samsung/US cell phone carriers will guarantee 18 months of software support. I will never buy a Samsung Phone with USA carrier branding again.

Samsung and USA carriers have horrible track record of providing updates for Android devices.

Prime example. Samsung Galaxy S vibrant with Tmobile USA flagship phone. EOL after 7 months. Second example. Samsung behold 2.

Haha, I haven't heard a single good thing about ANY of the UI skins. Not one. Everyone hates almost every single one of them.

I never have to worry about the carriers updating the iOS. One more positive about the iPhone.

Ever heard of something called Retina Display?

Yep, DPI makes something sharper when viewed at a close distance. How close would you hold a 5, 6, 7" phone?

Why keep making screens bigger on what is supposed to be a phone?
