I am looking for a thin sleeve to throw Macbook Air in my laptop backpack. Also I would like to have it fit my other 13.3' laptop. Any good choice? I don't need it to be super protective but good enough to have some basic scratch protection.

I also wanted super light and so far the most promising I found is radtech sleevz (radsleevz on amazon) - the weights are between 33-42g, that's less than 1.5oz. I'd love to hear though if you find something better/lighter.

This one seems like the best bet for a college student like myself :p

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the first statement. Are you concerned that the weight distribution in the bag must be carefully considered? That is a criticism of messenger-style bags, in that having an 'empty bucket' to put items into is useful when loading, but things do move around. Another reason I don't use the Timbuk2 daily any more.
That is absolutely not what I meant. I've been using messenger bags for years and what you are describing here is not because of their messenger-style but because of them being bags. In other words: every bag will have the problem you are describing, stuff will move around which is why we have things like dividers and pockets. Thinking about what goes where does help too.

What I meant is that it seems that the Timbuk2 bags need to be more carefully packed compared to other messenger bags to keep things like rain and snow out of the bag. Not a very big issue though.

Best of luck in your search.
No need, already found one weeks ago which works beautifully against rain (have been able to test it already :() When I was still looking for a bag I noticed the strange (well at least to me it is strange) design with the Timbuk2 bags and I wondered if this was going to be a problem or not. It seems that it is not a big problem but you need to be a bit more thoughtful.

Thanks for clearing that up. My apologies for misunderstanding.

My main messenger bag experiences have been with the 'West Coast' (U.S.) companies including Timbuk2, Chrome, Rickshaw, Waterfield, Tom Bihn, etc. I think they tend to employ similar designs, as compared to European companies.

Glad to hear you found something that works for you, which bag did you end up with?

One from our friendly eastern neighbours the Germans: a Vaude Albert M :) Those are made out of the same type of canvas the truck trailers are made of. Very rain resistant and lots of stretchy pockets inside so stuff stays where it should be. Bottles, foldable umbrellas, etc. keep upright and don't move at all. It has a very good fit which is why it doesn't move.

I am perfectly happy with the fit on my 11" MBA. I had extremely high expectations for the sleeve and Alex delivered. The machine fits snugly without having to labor to put it in or take it out. The sleeve sits flat when empty, no stretching of the leather to be seen.

I think the sleeve would stand up to many years of regular use and I bet Alex would fix any issue relating to construction or material quality that could possibly come up.

thanks for the feedback

i'm now hesitating between the napa leather and the slick black leather :p

i guess that napa leather would be the best choice as any single scratch would be immediately noticeable on the slick leather

I just ordered this case (http://www.etsy.com/listing/89288680/monogram-napa-leather-case-for-macbook) for my new 13" air. It's a little more than I normally pay for a case, about $85 shipped, but it's hand made in Palo Alto and the leather looks beautiful. He also has the option to emboss your name on it, or have no logos at all. I'll make sure to report back when I have it in my hands :D

Just thought I'd do a little update, I've had this case (and my new macbook air :)) for about 2 weeks now. All I can say is that the quality is amazing, the leather looks beautiful, although mine is a little lighter with a hint of red color wise, and it smells exquisite. The stitching is perfect and the edges are very stiff and protective. One thing to note though is that the leather is pretty thick, the whole case is around 1/2" thick, and it is pretty heavy for a case, ~1lb. For me though the positives far outweigh the negatives and I would recommend this sleeve to anyone.

Also the pictures on his site are very representative of what you will receive, although the color may be a little off.

Wow, those look outstanding. Going to have to bookmark this to come back when I get the 5th gen iPhone (whatever it's going to be named). I've never been one for a case on my iPhone, but a sleeve like that would be a very nice accessory. Really liking this one without the flap or any other closure. Perfection.

Edit: And from Ireland?!? Could this get any more perfect? I guess no huh...that's kind of what perfect is.

Haha… Thank you, it's comments like this one that make our work truly rewarding! :)

I am about to order my MacBook Air and am trying to decide between these to bags. Anyone have any experience with either?

I've got a Booq bag that seems to be discontinued. I've looked at the Mamba and it looks like it would make a very suitable replacement. The quality is far beyond what I have seen in previous bags from Victorinox and I don't see myself having to replace it any time soon. They include a service called Terralinq that may help relocate your lost bag.

When I ordered mine I bought the small size for the 13" laptop and decided I wanted the extra space and returned for the 15" size bag. They didn't charge any additional restocking fees and shipped the replacement free with a return label for the small bag. I think they got confused and thought it was their mistake, but when I asked them about it they said "Oh, it's no problem"

Needless to say, I have no reason to go looking elsewhere for a bag.

Your welcome :) pretty bulk indeed! I'd say almost 1cm.

According to instructions it's made from low resilience polyurethane (but it looks like neoprene) so if you press it it's sinks but passed a few seconds recover it's position. So you have an impressive feedback in case of fallings hehe

Also it has this tissue below the zipper to avoid entering in contact with mba and really fits like a glove, very very tight indeed :)

I just got my LA Robe case in pumpkin today. I like the polyurethane - I visited an Apple store last week to have a look at the Acme case and although it looked cooler, it was more expensive and offered what looked like not much protection in comparison to the LA Robe.

It's not the most snug fit in the world in terms of depth, but the material will surely protect it so I'm pretty happy overall. Thanks for your advice!

I was just at the Apple Store looking at cases for my 13" Macbook Air and I didn't like any of them (same goes for on apple.com/store). In fact, I hated them. I've been looking for something really simple, sleek, light and full-enclosure. The only one I would consider is the Incase designed solely for Macbook Air but that only comes in the 11" size.

So that got me thinking, if I'm going to spend $40+ for a case and they don't even have the simple cases I'm looking for, why limit myself to something boring with bad design.

That said, I'm seriously considering one of these:

There are no reviews on it yet, but the analogous case for 11" 2010 MBA got solid 5 star reviews:

What do you guys think? Is it worth it to try to be novelty and cool or should I just stick with the boring standard leather/neoprene/canvas zippered cases?

Any good thin sleeves for 13" MBA under $20? I just want some scratch protection for when I throw it in a backpack.

thanks hb, I just ordered the 13" from amazon. It was 18.99 + tax + shipping. $24.59 total. Sure beats the special $40 cases at the Apple Store.
