Our collective gaze then turns to Gameweek 34 – but what did 33 do for our MacRumors Cup fortunes?

MR-Cup-Table_w33.png

The table tells us two things. First, three more teams have qualified for the knock out stag3, so congratulations to Tilpots, swiftaw and me (heh) as The Stoplights, Omaha Latics and Sporting Dual-Cores have secured their passage into the Quarter Finals.

Tilpots.pngOmaha-Latics.pngSporting-Dual-Cores.png

Meanwhile, only one place remains, and as it stands it can only be won by Kofi's Fabulous Boyz or Nieval's Angry Mob, the latter currently occupying eighth place. However, Kofi needs to win both his remaining Group matches and hope Nieval slips up in both of his to have any chance of catching the Mob.

Here then are this week's Cup fixtures...

Shanti Stars vs The Stoplights
SF Giants vs La Selecta
Brainerd FC vs Omaha Latics
Nieval's Angry Mob vs Neutron Heath
Sporting Dual-Cores vs The Fightin' Shrooms
Renfrew Meerkats vs Fabulous Boyz

Cripes! As it stood prior to this week's kick off, Brainerd FC had closed the gap at the top of the table to a single point thanks in no small part to an inspired performance by Clint Dempsey. My Cores have been reporting in for extra training this week, while pivo6 is no doubt delighted with his shrewd selections.

Another of our managers who will be delighted at the moment is Nieval, whose Angry Mob have qualified for next week's MacRumors Cup Quarter Final. All eight spots have been taken up, so this week's fixtures are merely for pride and – for those who have qualified – jockeying for a more favourable seeding.

But that's for next week – for now, congratulations to Nieval and his charges. :)

Nieval's-Angry-Mob.png

And it looks like another two-team league as Sporting Dual Cores and Brainerd FC have opened a 100 point gap on third placed Hearts Valencia Neutron Heath.

Cleveland FC labor in 7th, buoyed by Odemwingie and Dempsey's recent run of good form but well off the pace. Like Wenger, I've struggled to settle on a proper captain.

Well, my balls have been clacking away in their velvety sack all week, which can only mean one thing – it's time for the draw for the Quarter Finals of the Macrumors Cup...

QF_1.png
The Fightin' Shrooms vs The Stoplights
pjlander's Shrooms comfortably topped the Group table in this year's Cup competition, but that's no guarantee of success as they face The Stoplights. Tilpots came out on top in last summer's MacRumors World Cup, so the Shrooms face what could well be a stern test of their Cup credentials.

QF_2.png
Brainerd FC vs Nieval's Angry Mob
Reigning League Champions and Macrumors Fantasy heavyweights Brainerd FC also reached last year's Cup Final, so pivo6's boys must surely be the favourites in this tie as they take on underdogs Nieval's Angry Mob. The Mob may be angry, but will Brainerd be upset at the Quarter Final stage?

QF_3.png
SF Giants vs Omaha Latics
Silencio's SF Giants take on swiftaw's Omaha Latics in our third Quarter Final match. The Giants won the previous encounter in Gameweek 32, but that aside honours are even between the two teams as we head into what promises to be a closely fought encounter.

QF_4.png
Neutron Heath vs Sporting Dual-Cores
His team may have gone under a number of guises during the course of the season, but oscillatewildly will be looking to ensure that Neutron Heath is the only name engraved on the MacRumors Cup this season. In their way are in-form League leaders Sporting Dual-Cores, who have lost only one of their last ten Cup fixtures – and that only by a single point...

That concludes the draw for the Quarter Finals of the MacRumors Cup – all matches will be played over the course of Gameweek 36.

Trending - Clint Dempsey in hiding

Clint Dempsey is being protected after several bids to injure him. A spokesman confirmed Dempsey was unharmed after bungled attempts that wouldn't have been out of place in 'A Fish Called Wanda'. The authorities are following a lead with a Charles N'Zogbia connection.

Update:

There is rumour that whilst Clint escaped, his teammate Luka Modric hasn't been so lucky. The authorities believe the assailant has "...scored something of an own-goal."; experts reading between the line have taken it to mean Modric has been hurt and will miss the next game.

---

Edit - congratulations to Jaffa Cake's Sporting Dual-Cores. I was tempted to do a Mancini/Wenger. :)

Apologies for my tardiness regarding last month's MacRumors Manager of the Month award – and in particular to pjlander, for it is he who was our top rated gaffer in April with a splendid tally of 348 points.

shrooms_348.png

So well done, pjlander. :)

Here then is the League table as we head into the penultimate Gameweek of the season...

The draw for the Cup semi-finals to follow.

The results from the MacRumors Cup Quarter Finals, then...

The Fightin' Shrooms 40-28 The Stoplights
Brainerd FC 52-32 Nieval's Angry Mob
SF Giants 45-48 Omaha Latics
Neutron Heath 44 : 56 Sporting Dual-Cores

Which means that – so far as the Cup is concerned – we say goodbye to The Stoplights, Nieval's Angry Mob, SF Giants and Neutron Heath for another season. Commiserations, chaps.

What that also means is that our Semi finals look something like this...

Semi_1.png
Sporting Dual-Cores vsThe Fightin' Shrooms
A match of the fantasy heavyweights as the current League leaders take on the Cup's top ranked team - something has to give!

Semi_2.png
Omaha Latics vs Brainerd FC
pivo6's Brainerd FC are one match away from their second consecutive Cup Final, but they'll have to get past swiftaw's Latics before they can even entertain thoughts of open top buses and civic receptions.

That concludes the draw for the Semi Finals of the MacRumors Cup – both matches will be played over the course of Gameweek 37.

Just woke up and checking out the morning scorelines....C'mon you Shrooms! We need some silverware for the mantle!

7-6. The early lead against our faithful commish.

Keep it up Shrooms!

:(

It is looking bleak. I thought using my wildcard this week would prove to be a stellar move. It was...in the wrong direction. Dropped Bent, added Suarez, yuck. I caught the Vermaelen buzz and thought he would make an impact for Arsenal, not Aston Villa. Substituing out my goalie was a bad managing move as well.

I need a miracle tonight.

Blimey – where has the season gone? We've just one more Gameweek remaining, and things couldn't any be closer in the race for the title.

Thanks in no small part to an inspired performance from Fulham's gamekeeper-turned-poacher Brede Hangeland, pivo6's Brainerd FC have seized top spot from my Sporting Dual-Cores. However, things at the top are tighter than Jon Parkin's jersey as the Hoops lead is a mere two points.

Here's the full table as things stand...

League-Table_37.png

Both myself and pivo6 face some tricky decisions for the final week – after battling it out since last summer a single careless or inspired selection now could win or lose the whole competition. So, no pressure or owt. :p

But it doesn't stop at that. The MacRumors Cup results are in, and this weekend's final will see last year's runner-up Brainerd FC take on... the Sporting Dual-Cores.

Brainerd-FC_CupFinal.pngSporting-Dual-Cores_CupFinal.png

It really is going to be a case of winner takes all this weekend!

On that note, commiserations to the two teams eliminated from the Cup at the Semi-Final stage – swiftaw and his Omaha Latics and pjlander's Fighting' Shrooms.

But as for me and pivo6 – we're heading for Wembley!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Wembley for the 2011 MacRumors Cup Final – a match-up which will also decide this years MacRumors Fantasy League itself.

wembley.jpg

Our destination is once again Vale Farm – home to non-League Wembley FC – to see pivo6's Brainerd FC take on my own Sporting Dual-Cores.

These are the top two ranked sides of this year's League competition, and with pivo6's Hoops holding only a slender 2 point lead going into the final Gameweek it's almost certain that one of these two sides will this afternoon compete an unprecedented League and Cup double.

Although the action doesn't start until 4pm GMT, both sets of supporters have already started making theiir way to the ground as the excitement begins to build. The Cores tifosi have already started decorating their end of the ground with banners and flags...

Buildup_Cores_fans.png

...while their be-hooped counterparts are busy snapping up every bit of red and white tat being hawked in the streets around Vale Farm.

Buildup_Brainerd_fans.png

All the best, pivo6 – may the best team win!

Congratulations to Jaffa Cake and his Cores on achieving the Double, the traffic lights of England will be on amber for the parade. How will the owner behave if Sporting fail to follow domestic success with glory in Europe?

Praise also goes to pivo6 and Brainerd FC for cementing their position as a league and cup powerhouse.

A decent improvement by Neutron Heath, but third by a long way shows the requirement for better dealing during the summer.

Cheers to all,
OW

Well done Jaffa Cake, and to all who played. :)

Another top ten finish for me, though I just couldn't climb out of seventh for most of the season. My captain designations were criminally ill-judged, that put a decent dent in my points total. There's always next season...

Delight for the Cores...

Cores_win.png

...but despair for Brainerd FC.

Brainerd_loss.png

Brainerd FC 28-53 Sporting Dual-Cores

After a nail-biting final day, it was my own Sporting Dual-Cores who came out on top to claim an unprecedented League and Cup Double – the first meaningful silverware in the club's history.

For posterity, here's the final table...

League-Table_Final.png

And it goes without saying, thanks and well done to everyone who took part in this season's competition. In particular, commiserations to pivo6 who once again proved his worth as a formidable fantasy manager.

Now, if you'll excuse me I've got to follow recent tradition by dropping one or both trophies off the top of a bus. :p

See you next season. ;)

Congratulations to Mr. Cake on winning the double. I had to make too many changes just to catch up on the penultimate week and couldn't afford to make more than 1 change with such a slim lead. The lads are pretty gutted but have vowed to challenge again next season.

Woohoo, SF Giants going to Europe after their first season in the league! Nothing like that October magic, but trophies aren't won in October (unless we're talking baseball).

Congrats on the big double, Jaffa! I have a lot of improvements to make to catch up next season.

Hats off to Jaffa Cakes! Two championships while helming both leagues, very impressive... Your hard work on and off the pitch has not gone unrewarded.

The Stoplights will regroup this offseason and hope to challenge next year. Hopefully they'll retain me as manager, or at least waterboy. Yeah, probably waterboy.
