I returned my 5s (because it was space gray) and while waiting to buy a replacement Silver 5S I had to use my mom's old 4s. r.
I would be embarrassed to post I had to use my mom's phone :D
Doen't give your "opinion " much weight.

Not really. I'm on my parents family plan & I staggered the upgrades. So every year I get the latest iPhone, I give her my old phone, then sell her old phone to recoup part of the upgrade cost. Basically I get the latest iPhone every year for 100 bucks or less.

I didn't sell her 4s yet because I used it while looking around for my 5s in Silver.

Coincidentally after I gave her my 5, she commented how much lighter it was.

I had no idea the colour of my phone reflected my status. How sad and immature of a mindset. Best get a black car next time round because I need to make sure people know I'm not 8 and earn quite a lot.

Of course it does. If you went to work in a beat up 1980s minivan that would say something about you. Likewise if you brought a spiderman lunch box on your lunch break that would also say something about you. What we buy, what we do, they are a reflection of who we are on the inside.

I guess I'm showing my age, but I never thought I'd live to see the day that people made value judgements about others based on the color of their cell phone! Why even bother to get into a discussion with anyone about a phone you don't have and don't like? I personally don't care for the 5s, but I don't go to threads about it and bash it, or anyone who choses to buy it ;)

Pretty sad and pathetic. But I think it represents a very, very tiny slice of the population. Like the people that bang on about how Steve Jobs would only make a phone out of "premium " materials, ignoring the fact the 3G and 3GS happened on his watch and came after the original "premium" aluminum iPhone.

I love the feel of the 5c and would get one if it had the same camera as the 5s. The 5s camera alone was worth it to me to upgrade. I still think the 5c plastic feels great and I don't feel I would have to use a case with it. To me the 5s scratches too easy to go without a case and I don't like the feel of it. The square corners make it less comfortable to hold without a case while the 5c feels more comfortable in hand due to the rounded corners.

I do agree ...

Well, I love photography, and have cameras I feel comfortable with and prefer to use. I guess it's nice to have an 'all in one' device, but that's not necessary for me. To each his own...which I think is great :D

*facepalm* I love all the hating going on xD Especially the 5S owners giving the 5C owners crap trying to make them feel bad.

No matter what, it's a $100 difference. $100 isn't the difference between driving a Kia Rio and driving a BMW 5 series, in fact it means exactly NOTHING.

Did I say nothing? Yeah. Pretty much nothing. That said, I've known some people that had expensive clothes and an iPhone, and drove around in a Hyundai. Some people have different priorities, and there's probably plenty of BMW 5 drivers out there that swear by their MetroPCS flipphone they got for $25 at walgreens.

Just enjoy what you've got instead of trying to think it says something about you, because it really doesn't.

People were still buying the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S while the iPhone 5 was the flagship. I really dont see why people won't buy the iPhone 5C while the iPhone 5S is out. Even if its a 60/40 ratio in favor of the 5S, okay?

Us trendy tech nerds like the cool stuff. The casual consumer will go with the colorful stuff or the cheaper stuff. There are more casuals than us iPhone fanatics.

That said, I don't really think the iPhone 5C is flopping all that much, it might be doing better than the 4S was when the 5 came out. Some colors of the T-Mobile 5C went onto backorder before the 20th (on T-Mo's site).

It's already working... Have you seen sales numbers from Apple to know that it isn't? No! We never will probably, but I have read from a reliable source that sales are split 50/50 so I'd say it's working

And there're reports from serious sources saying it is not actually selling (channel fill).

You got a Yellow 5c? Jesus Christ. How old are you? Do you also drive a Mustang Convertible?

Furthermore the colors aren't very professional. Hot Pink, Candy Green. It's great for kids in the age group of 8-16.

Bottom-line is 5c is perfect for your 8 year old daughter, not for a banker.

So your phone choice should be determined by your age? And it speaks to whether you are a professional or not?

I am a professional and I am 43......and I would LOVE to have a blue or green 5C!!

I don't get the comparisons to other years where you could buy the prior year's model at $99.

Likewise, it's completely fair for others to judge iPhones. These are positioned as luxury or aspirational accessories, and how you accessorize tells a lot about yourself and personality.

In the past - if you bought the 4 when the 4S came out, or even the 4S when the 5 came out, nobody could casually tell the difference. Now there is a marker to tell the world you chose to buy the cheaper iPhone. And once the 4/4S/5/5S are in a case or shell you really can't tell them apart unless the person leaves it stationary and visible for a while. They designed the 5c so even the cases show off the color of the device, so you can always tell what device the owner is holding.

Two things are really going to hurt the 5c domestically over the next year, IMO:

1. The gold 5S. This is the desirable color everyone wants. In hindsight it is probably not a good year to branch out colors of the new device when color is one of the key features of the lower price new option. Having gone to a family function where there were a lot of tweens and teens this weekend I can tell you matter of factly the kids in my extended family do not want a 5c. They all want the gold 5S.

2, I think with adults, the touch ID is going to hurt 5c sales. I can tell you with my inlaws, they like the idea of a plastic shell but they like having security without a password to type even more. Particularly my mother in law, who is a bit shaky and has arthritis and struggles with touch screens and pretty much uses her phone for calling and to receive text messages.

It's hard to forecast how you measure success with the 5c. If the margins are good enough and it flops in the US but does well overseas, then it is a success even if it wasn't a success in the US.

I also don't really care what people choose, but JMO, this may be a bottom line margin success but I think next year there will be much more differentiation between the devices. They should really give each a feature which prevents this sort of judgment about color and price, which is IMO fair at this point.

The 5c is already a success. The infrastructure to produce iPhone's metal backing is expensive. This is the reason we only see Apple with Metal, Unibody, Products. And other companies with plastic. They just can't build these devices as cost-effectively.

Unfortunately even with Apple's slight increase in efficiency over the competition it is still expensive. Every year Apple sells more and more phones. So going forward Apple (or it's partners) would have had to invest into more infrastructure for the increased demand in metal, unibody phones. So they switched to plastic.

I don't know which serious source reports it's 50/50 without channel filling.

There is a very reliable source that says sales were split at least 50/50. He also says that the 5c may have actually sold more then 5s. Ming Chi-kuo... Who is a very reliable source when it comes to all things Apple... The same guy that said the 5 would be discontinued 3 months before it was ... Everyone said he was crazy and what happened

Was having drinks with a good friend yesterday... I pulled out my iPhone to check a message, and he said "Dude, you got the cheap iPhone... You're a banker, what are you doing with one of those." This guy is a trendy dude (works in art, etc) and pretty funny... I told him it was the same as the iPhone 5, better than his 4S (which runs iOS7 beautifully, BTW), etc. At the end of the day, he was a bit unconvinced. It's a dumb conversation, but the fact is millions will have the same view. And its difficult to really say the 5c is much better than the 5 given iPhones 4-5S basically work well for most people's phone usages and all run the current OS.

In prior years, I would have upgraded to the 5s, but this year I chose the 5c instead due to the more hefty feel and better battery life. Cost wasn't an issue and really shouldn't be given the phones essentially cost the same. However, it will always be seen as the "cheap iPhone" when no such thing ever existed. This may be a problem going forward as Apple has never made "cheap" products even when some of their products have been inexpensive (iPhones are pretty inexpensive on contract and basically always have been). I doubt this issue would have been solved by making the phone worse and cheaper as many suggest.

Not sure how Apple overcomes this in the long run.

Not sure how Apple overcomes your insecurity in your choice of iPhone? Really?

The 5C colours do it no favour, if your after a classy phone.

Take the 5C and the iphone 4, the 4 is far classier, the black and silver, like jobs said, looks like a Leica, compared to.... a kids phone.

My 10 year old daughter opted for an iPhone 5 instead of the 5c
An iPhone to a 10 years old girl ?!?

.....

----------

The 5C is still a $550 phone. It costs more than half the other smartphones on the market.

Cheap my ass.

Here is a 750$ phone ....

Tell me if you still think that after seeing a bunch of teenagers with blue and green 5cs.

.

I'm 41 and I would like a green 5C ....
In my opinion a "bunch of teenagers" shouldn't have so an expensive phone at all, but maybe I have a different opinion from yours regarding education.

My 15 years old son has a Galaxy 3 mini, a 240€ phone here in Italy, and is about the maximum I would spend for a teenager.

Yup.... Lucky kid ehhh ;)
Actually I never thought I'd give my child a phone until at least 13. But circumstances change, and I needed a way for her to communicate with me, and me her. I won't pay $30 a month for a family texting plan, so now she has iMessage, and the family can stay in touch.
I can also see where she is at all times with the find my friends app, and find my phone.
I put a squaretrade warranty on it, because she is 10, but I really don't think we'll need it.
People have reasons sometimes other than appeasing a spoiled brat. I am one of them, and no, my kid is not a spoiled brat:p

The iphone 5C will be very popular for young people and people who want to be different :)

I don't think the 5c has any problem selling. It's taking the spot the iphone 5 woulda filled. People will usually buy based on cost. ...

WHY in the world would they do that?? You do understand the price difference is only $100, right? I can't imagine cost coming into the equation at all. I bought the 5c because it looks better and is heavier. It actually feels like a quality product compared to the 5s. But everyone will make their own decision based upon what they are looking for. I don't think the $100 makes any difference.

haha. You sound really uptight and boring. Life should be fun. Color is fun. I am an adult in a professional career, and I love the color of my bright green 5c. (and also the shockingly bold RED full-leather interior of my Porsche.) I'm glad I don't feel the need to own drab, boring-looking products out of some need to feel secure in my "professionalism".

I kind of agree. As someone who has never bought an iPhone off contract and someone who remembrs paying $400 to buy a refurbished Razr to replace a lost one, iPhones have never really been that costly. We are buying pocket sized computers for $200-300. That's historically cheap.
