At this point all the negative press should have made Apple redesign it by now

Apple had to switch keyboards back, remove Touch Bar, redesign the Mac Pro etc... due to bad press, but not this. This is just a clear sign that the bottom position is the correct position.

I thought they would keep the design. I tried Logitec mice but I learned the so called ergonomics block my work as the shape forces my hand into just one position. On the contrary I love Magic Mouse to free my fingers and switching screens at ease. No issues with the connector or very rarely. I think Apple does not want people to charge on a cord while using it.

My Magic Mouse lasts for months and the low battery warning lasts for days. If I am incompetent enough to let it die, I can literally charge it for 2 minutes, grab a coffee and continue on for another month. The charging port on the bottom was a clear decision to not allow lazy customers to degrade their experience by leaving it plugged in. This is the largest non-issue ever.
Man, it’s refreshing to see a normal reasonable comment.

Sure there’s the clear hilarious troll take (in a good way) and the funny comments by some proper internet comedians, but it’s insane the amount of non-post-readers impatient commenters, entitled lash outs, uncalibrated behavior, etc.

It’s as if the world has gone crazy, any little micro annoyance is a sky falling, nothing is ever enough.

The interesting thing is I’m sure the majority of those wouldn’t behave that way in a face to face conversation.
Nevertheless I dread having a co-worker or god forbid, a manager, that acts and talks like a big chunk of the crowd here as that would have the potential to make for a perpetually really gruesome team work experience.

For anybody else reading this: not meaning to take away from your ailments, by all means complain and lash as loud as needed, freely. Nobody is an authority here and it helps give a hint to others.

Not only is the charging port on the bottom perfectly fine, can you imaging trying to use this mouse with a cable attached to, where? — the front? I'd have to rearrange my desk to allow for the space for the five minutes I'd need it plugged in. The whole point of a wireless mouse seems to be largely missed…

It makes a material difference and Apple will still love you if you say so. It’s objectively, empirically better. Any mouse with a higher DPI is smoother and easier to use. I’m not sure how you’re arguing the equivalent of the earth is flat, but here we are
it doesn’t matter if something can be technically measured as better if the customer can’t tell the difference or if it doesn’t make a difference in their lives.

Many can barely tell 4k from 1080p or 120hz from 60hz. Many can’t at all. Meanwhile mouse dpi in today’s world is much further up on the splitting of hairs scale.

There is reality and there is tech for tech’s sake. You’re not living in the first one.

I can tell the difference between 1 kHz and 4 kHz polling rate. I have gaming mice for this purpose.

Can't believe people still can't get over this.

The mouse has weeks of battery life. You use it max 10 hours a day. Just remember to plug it in at the end of your computer session once every few weeks.

I'm guessing the same people can't wrap their heads around cleaning the filter in their Dyson vacuums, or charging an Xbox controller.

I haven’t used one for several years, but agree with you except when I had one I never got a battery warning - it just died. If you actually get a warning, I agree with you.

yah but magsafe/qi charging thx

Yes, I think it's around there too. But I'd welcome a visual prompt maybe in the main menu that might be a yellow dot at 10% and then a red dot at 5% or something like that.

As is, I delete the notification but then forget at the end of the day.
Understood. Yes, something like what you've mentioned would definitely be helpful.

Yeah, that's your take.
My Magic Trackpad has the charging port on the back and still looks great. If the bottom REALLY was optimal it would be there in this case too.

It's absolutely form over function.
the fact that the trackpad has it in it's back is the exact reason that is not form over function. If it was form over function they all had to be on the bottom for keyboard adn trackapad.

Charging the MM for 2 mins gives you 9 hours use.
Charging the Apple Pencil or 15 seconds gives you 30 mins of use.
Charging the AirPods for 5 min give you 1 hour of use.

Grab a coffee, stretch your fingers and take a sh*t, respectively.

There is no issue.

Question for you. Regarding the Mighty Mouse only, (ignoring ALL other criteria such as charging time);
In terms of function, is it best to have the charging port on the bottom of the device...........

or the front of the device............

WTH is the problem?

The Answer: It does not matter. Either are perfectly good solutions.

If the battery needs few hours to be charged to give ample time for the user to continue his/her work, then the second image represents a good solution.

If charge time under few mins is required for the device to perform over 8 hours of work, you can position the chargin port ANYWHERE.

I think we're done here Representative Anaxarxes. Thanks for your manifesto.

The answer to this question lies in what Apple knows, which we unfortunately are not privy to.

That is, if Apple designed this with port on the bottom because they are concerned with the aesthetics of a port somewhere along the edge of the mouse, that would be form over function.

If, however, Apple designed this with the port on the bottom because they want to render it inoperable while charging (due to a technical reason/limitation), that would be function over form (especially given the fact that an upside down mouse sitting on the desk is arguably ugly).

If it still works while plugged in then it's form over function regardless of what they intended.
The device is more usable when the port is NOT on the bottom. Apple and anybody else is free to spin it any way they like to try and reason otherwise.

I don't know what you mean by "if it still works" because it clearly is not usable while plugged in and they didn't arrive at that design by accident.

Exactly, they have chosen form to be more important than function.

No, that's not true. I explained it already and I'll reiterate:

If the design team decided that they felt it was ugly to have a port along the edge of the mouse and designed the port in the bottom to address that aesthetic concern it would be form over function.

If, however, the design team was concerned with customers using the mouse as a wired mouse for a technical reason, such as, wanting to preserve battery health, that's a function over form decision.

You're attributing the form over function conclusion to Apple without enough evidence because you don't know what decisions guided their design.

EDIT: also, while you may not like this, it's also a function over form argument if Apple concluded amongst themselves they don't want the mouse used in a wired format and made the mouse unusable while wired for that reason. Wireless vs. wired is a functional decision--not form. That's not a purely aesthetic decision, which is where your argument becomes faulty.

I don't care what their decisions were and software can easily manage battery health so that doesn't fly. I l know of plenty of items that don't work when plugged in and others that intelligently manage charge.
I mean why does my trackpad work when plugged in and wireless then?
I think the LA Lakers are missing your ability to reach so you get back to the team and let's agree to disagree.
