i wish! they are ~$260Aus over here. 2TBs are ~$109Aus. i cannot justify that price increase!Someday I will fulfill that dream. Are you going to use those new 3TB drives?

They are similarly priced in the states right now, sadly.
I'm rockin 4 1.5TB drives in my file server right now. Hopefully the next time I upgrade those 3.0TB drives will be a little cheaper!
very nice. i have drives in external enclosure - so its a bit all over the place
* dual caddy 2x2TB RAID1
* dual caddy 2TB + 1TB
* 1TB
* 500GB
* File Server has 4x250GB in RAID5
* random other HDDs
i wish to combine these all into usable storage that is redundant, rather then just pishposhing around!
i am initially thinking of combining the existing 2x2TBs in RAID0 then another new set of 2x2TBs into the file server, which will hopefully tie me over until mid next year when i can grab some 3TBs![]()
hardware or software based RAID5?I really need to just do a single RAID5, but I have 2 independent 1.5TBs at 7200RPM and then 2 in RAID0 for Time Machine at 5400RPM. I was kinda worried the differing speeds wouldn't be great for a single RAID5. Time Machine is kind of pointless in this setup since I'm really just worried about hard drive failures anyway...

its REALLY recommended to have all RAID drives identical to the serial number.
as in Virtual Machine?After my PowerHac, I really want to build a VM server. That's got to be my next hardware project. That will be done after the move though, I have too much stuff even without the PowerHac to ship to New York whenever it happens!
about $400 for a pretty good quality one - i dont think OSX can RAID5 btw.I would just do software. Isn't a decent hardware RAID card a little pricey?
Yeah so I can have a load of Virtual Machines.
Well The Dremel I have isn't that great, so I need to find something to cut the sheet metal a bit better (but something cheap!)
Any ideas?
Yess, that's the kind of thing I want! I was using some diamond tipped thing that did basically nothing...
I'm feeling a little sad that I'm not running my new kit, but it would be best if I don't try and bodge things and actually do it properly!
Did it take long to get through the metal? My housemate looked at the case and was amazed by a) how nice the case design is (he thought I was mad wanting to put all this work into using 'just a case' at first) and b) how high quality the metal is, as in how thick it is.
Also, Aria had a special on - £130 for an E5400 CPU, MSI G41 chipped motherboard and 2GB RAM, so that is what I'm using for this.
When it comes to the Virtual Machine Server, I'm going to use a cheap 4 or 6 core AMD processor and as much RAM as I can afford...
That's great!
Also, how did you pull those standoffs off the motherboard with pliers? I've tried with some regular ones, but they just didn't seem to budge...
well my hack/file server has had a drawback for a while - doesnt look like ill be able to invest for another month or so now
hopefully 2TBs will be even cheaper by then
i will probably get the Antec 1200 case - holds 12 HDDs which should be enough for me.
I'm not sure how easy it is to get it working with OS X, but I have been briefly looking at a gtx 460. Most likely impossible.I'm thinking about upgrading my gfx card. I have a GTX260 in there now but i want a bit more balls for playing games in W7. I'm looking around $200, any suggestions?
I was looking at a 460 too but it doesnt seem to play nice with OSX. 'Tis a shame because its a pretty great card at a good price.

I am getting a step closer. Purchased 2x2TBs the other day, still wanting that antec case but i need a new PSU too![]()
The 460 is now fully compatible with OS X! It's a breeze to install too (from what I hear). I'll be upgrading the drivers on my box during exam break![]()
