Okay I am pretty stupid. I was going to get the 2.8 760 i5 all along when I read on a forum that it is easier if you use a CPU that OS X supports otherwise you have to do soemthing to the kernal to get it to boot.... and I read that the 2.66 750 is supported... so I went ahead and ordered the 2.66 before even checking to see that Apple has iMacs with a 2.8 i5... sigh... the shipment has shipped so I can't cancel it. CRAP. It's not the end of the world.. I could always overclock it?

the 2.66 750 is supported, as apple used that CPU (architecture) before, and yes you can easily overclock it if you wish :)

I know it is supported which is why I purchased it! I didn't realize the 2.8 760 was stupidly and was originally going to order the 2.8. Oh well..

This is a really noob question, but after I setup my hackintosh, how do I start it up w/o using the boot cd.

Its good habit to keep your dvd drive first on the list and just remove dvds when you are done with them. That generally requires you to be sober enough to remember ;)

So I'm nearly ready to start my next Hackintosh project.

This time it's from scratch and will be my most challenging engineering feat yet (after putting together an Ikea wardrobe ;) )!

I was given a G4 Quicksilver which will be the case by a colleague and I'm going to set about my work on Saturday if I can get all of the parts shipped next day....

My part list is this:

-Pentium E5400 CPU (If I can find a Core 2 Duo for a similar amount, I might get that instead)
-Gigabyte GA-G31M Motherboard
-2GB RAM
-Zotac GT 240 1GB Graphics Card
-WD Scorpio 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive
-450w PSU

I'll also be getting a Dremel and a Soldering Iron for this project.

I will be getting a 2x 2.5 inch mount to put in the Zip drive bay for my Hard Drive and I'll be removing the Optical drive, hopefully modifying the CD panel to house one or 2 USB Ports and a CF Card reader.

Because for this workstation, I'm not going for loads of Storage - that's what the other one is for, 2.5" drives have more data density and I don't really like the positioning of the existing drive bays, right in the bottom.

Good luck and take lots of pics along the way!

With Snow Leopard, it was kind of forbidden to talk about, but I'm sure that if you go to the right irc channels, you'll see the hacking unfold...

I did this same type of thing with a PowerMac G4. Make sure you get a power supply that has the fans on the correct sides! :)

It wasn't terribly hard. I was actually surprised how easily everything fit. You only need the dremel for the back panel and drilling some holes for motherboard standoffs.

My PowerHack is still kicking it as my boxee box/NAS!

Is it ok to have the fan on the side by the processor?

My fan blows right onto the motherboard and I never had any issues. You want the power supply to be flush with the case, so I'd get on with no fan on the side that faces the case.

There is also a ton of pictures somewhere where a guy built a computer in a QuickSilver case that would show what I mean. Let me see if I can find them...

EDIT:

Here is the build I was talking about:

Wow! Thanks, I read through that and I'm beginning to get a little excited about the project! Just need Pay Day to come and I'll be able to order the parts and bring the Powermac home so I can transform it into a PowerHac!

I was pretty poor when I built that, so you can see it took me several weeks of buying parts lol

yesterday ;)

i will be purchasing either a 4U rack or Antec 1200 (both can hold 12x3.5"s) for a file server. not sure what OS i want on it yet... id love OSX 10.6 server but unfortunately its a C2D that is 32-bit, so no 10.6 :(

Someday I will fulfill that dream. Are you going to use those new 3TB drives?
