Mine is just a cheap FW card, i dont know the model of it, but i can find out. I just installed it and it worked instantly when i booted up. I wish i could test the daisy chain, but i cant....

the first hard drive in the chain works fine as does the DVD burner.. must just be the dual case. ill get the serial/model number later 2nite and see what it is.

Just upgraded to 10.5.7 with the 4xx MB install DMG. Hack paniced. I had to boot from my other Installation and install from there to my "main" disk. Then i deleted AppleIntelCPUPowermanagement.kext (as always) rebooted, everything seems fine! :D

anybody had any experience with a third party firewire400 card? i had one lying around and chucked it into my hack. it will only read my first daisy chained HD from a cold boot - if i try to plug it in when its booted up it wont recognise it.

the third device (dual bay HDs) arent recognised at all...

my chain goes single pay HD, DVD burner, dual bay HD.

any ideas?? is there any firmware i might have to install? google just gives back laptop problems

the card might not be getting enough power from the PCI bus, built in firewire ports are on the southbridge and get enough power. does it have a power connector of some sort? the PCI express FW card that i bought (havent tested yet as i havent even bought a PC!) has a molex power port on it.

Although what you posted is neat. I don't strive to break the law. And my father got a Hacintosh for a while.. but because it had low quality parts in it the thing decided to crash a bunch. So he bought a Mac and its still going after 4 years. But it looks like a lot of people pick better brands of hardware before building their computers. I don't know what this guy crammed in my dad's >>

For now I'll just stick to the Apple tax. Somehow I feel less... unsafe that way ><

I dunno, I'm weird.

What law? The Apple law in Apple Land? I live in Germany so laws from Appleland are not valid here...

Or do you mean their EULA?

I do not think your weird, maybe Apple can offer you a machine that fit's your bill. Unfortunately that's not the case for me, so i had to assemble my own 3 GHz Quad Core with dual (internal) DVD Drives.

Check my hackintosh

I am new at this, but for a long time I have been thinking about building my own mac. Please let me know if these components would be compatible to each other and if they would work with Leopard with no problems. If they don't, please suggest what I could use instead... Thanks! appreciate it!

thanks for the reply :) it has a molex (thats the 4-pin power connector that plugs into old IDE HD's right?) connector on it and i have plugged that in. it now appears that none of my drives/DVD burner are recognised by it - but they spin up when the computer turns on... *researches more*

Run the command below from Terminal and post your output.

Code:
sudo dmesg|grep 'FireWire'

I have a PCIe Firewire 800 & 400 card from DeLock. It recognises Firewire 800 drives from cold boot and when i plug them in when it is booted up (don't know about FW400).

Yes that law. I understand what you mean, but, way to be a smart ass. EULA is a law, isn't it? I really don't care if people make "Hackintosh" but I do hope they at least have the decency to BUY the OS first.

People that pirate Mac OS X are going to be responsible for Apple having to add "activation" to their Operating Systems some day.

An EULA is a contract.

A contract is by definition a legally binding document or agreement. However, because of the way they are designed, there are many jurisdictions that do not view, say, a click through EULA as binding as a contract in the normal sense.

By itself, the EULA means nothing unless there is a system of law to allow it's enforcement and recognizes its legitimacy.

An EULA is in no way a contract, those require informed consent meaning you need to be able at the very least read and sign it to signal your agreement to it before purchase. Even then a contract cannot take away any rights you already have under existing law in your country there is always a clause in an EULA stating this.

Right, which is why this is a legitimate point of contention, depending on where you are. These grey areas why the phrases "shrink-wrap license" and "click through licensing" came about. The former is just plain idiocy, but the latter, where you read the agreement before you click OK are in fact, by the letter of the law, legally binding. The purchase of the media before entering into a contract being a defining factor of the validity of said contract is another area of the law that may or may not be clearly defined, depending on where you live. There's a lot of provisions in any given EULA that are unenforceable or wholly given to the interpretation of the jurisdiction.

The "Mac Box Set" is a very good value, i do not regret buying it.

perfect £500ish laptop to run with OS X

Hi

i need to get a new laptop for my parents, who are looking to spend around £500. they've had trouble in the past with using windows, so I really want to get them an OS X laptop. with budget constraints buying a genuine apple mac is out of the question, so I am looking at sorting a hackintosh for them.

Does anybody have a hackintosh laptop that 100% works, and isn't too much trouble to setup? I will be fine to set everything up but everything needs to basically work ie wifi, graphics etc as I will not be able to keep going home to help them out!

I've been looking at the dell inspiron 15" and studio 15" as possibilities.. anyone got any experience of these?

many thanks

martin

my output is...

there is no output (Y)... great.

hmmmm.. it seemed to have worked because now everything is working!! all drives are going fine! thanks heaps!

go to insanely mac to get config advice. much more there

i doubt a dell laptop will work flawlessly lol

i built my desktop with components KNOWN to be compatible and have still ran into so many issues and hrs solving them

I really do not think a Hackintosh is a good thing for someone who is not real knowledgeable about computers. If your parents have trouble with Windows, a Hackintosh might be more problematic for them.

it's not that they can't cope with windows, just that their current computer is really slow. I am knowledgeable about computers, and am only asking if anyone has a laptop running os x pretty well that would cost £500 new. I am fully aware this kind of thing isn't supported but am also aware that if done with the right components these things can be just as stable as any bog standard windows machine.

any examples of laptops would be great

Dell Mini 9

Hey again,

Last time I posted here, it was about a MBP for 600 dollars. When the seller contacted me back, they pulled the typical cam line of I am in UK but willing to ship.

I am very tempted to get my hands on OSX to see how much I like it. I have always been a windows boy. Before I make the full switch, I want something to make sure I love it.

Currently I am looking at a Dell Mini 9. It comes with all of the normal stuff and the ram has been upgraded to 2GB. Also the SSD has been upgraded to a 32GB and the original 8 drive is still included. This laptop also features bluetooth, which is a feature I would like.

The price is was 420 and I offered 400 and he took it. What do you guys think.

Well, if you made a counteroffer, and he accepted, you are ethically-as well as legally/contractually-obligated to complete the transaction.

The mini 9's are well built, surprisingly solid little machines. They support os 10.5 well, and there is an active and thriving community dedicated to that form of hackintosh. The price is good for the specs of the machine.

If you're happy with the keyboard and trackpad of the machine, it's a clear and complete winner. I've had luck hacking an msi wind and lenovo s10 ideapad to 10.5.6, but I wasn't happy with the keyboards and trackpads of the machine. I much prefer my 12" g4 powerbook as my portable, light use machine for those reasons.
