I didn't think you could use a ASUS mobo for a hackintosh. I just built a server using a ASUS mobo and 2 dual core xeons. Currently using win7 but would be interested in putting leopard or tiger on it. Can this be done?

The last 6 months have been a real turning point for the Hackintosh community. They've gotten so good at it, that you can get most modern hardware working with minimal effort.

The last 2 weeks have brought a huge jump, by eliminating the need for the decryption kexts.

With the dual socket MB, I don't see why it wouldn't work, the new Mac Pro's opened that door.

There's still issues with using the Hackintosh hardware, but you can overcome them with enough effort, or you live with the issues (sleep is usually a PITA - I just turn power savings off).

Snow Leopard seems easier than Leopard did.

ASUS DSBV-DX Dual LGA 771 Intel 5000V SSI CEB 1.1 Dual Intel Xeon Server Motherboard.
Using the onboard video for now. Using it as a crunching machine for WCG. Tnks for the help.
It's been done. Check post #6 here. Not much info, but at least it's confirmation for your board. :)

Really?

Is it safe to assume if your system runs 10.5, it can run 10.6

I havent looked into the SL developement recently

No it's not safe to assume this. Since SL is movign towards a 64-bit architecture the kext files used for your specific setup may change. Give it at least a week to see what others experiences are.

Far friggin out. I hate winbloze but free is free (for a little while). I'll wait until I change out the 2 dual cores to 2 quad cores before doing this. Thanks again.
 NP. :)

As far as OS's, they all have their pros and cons IMO, so I like options (i.e. multiples; I'll take the kitchen sink too). :p

Well after a year of struggling with my top spec 17" MacBook Pro and it's rubbish graphics card and even more rubbish graphics card drivers, I woke up one morning and MacBook Pro was dead. Apple Store central London has a 25 day waiting list to see a genius. Boy I'm glad I didn't pay £300 UK for Applecare as well for that wait.

I looked at the new MacBook Pros and the bodies are beautiful but the screens are awful. The high res makes everything so small I get instant eye strain, and they still have Nvidea graphics cards. I never want to see another Nvidea graphics card ever again. I'm certainly not paying money for one.

www.insanelymac.com was it you say? How hard is it?

so, i have been wondering..

my hack with 8500GT has support for OpenCL (thats why my research tells me anyway). when i eventually purchase & install SL onto my hack, will it have support for OpelCL "built-in", or will it require some sort of modification?

thanks

What are you interested in? Laptop or desktop?

Blimey. I was hoping for a build your own Hackintosh guide @ insanelymac. All that looks insanely complicated and unlikely to work well.
Plus it's really hard to find out which forum you need to ask any questions.

Is there another site anyone can recommend?

Ideally I just want to replace the useless 8600 with another non- nvidia chip but I doubt that's possible or everyone would be doing it by now.

It's built in...

I have a GTX260 and downloaded a little benchmark utility to try it out...

16.1 seconds vs. 1.3 seconds seems to be pretty significant, but I don't really have a clue what's involved in this particular benchmark...

thats an impressive increase in speed. so by built in you mean it will work with any OpenCL compatible card- great!

There's nothing particularly wrong with Nvidia graphics cards and they actually work better on OSX than ATI cards do. Lots of people have had trouble with ATI 48xx on their Hackintoshes whereas the Nvidia GTX series works without problems.

If the resolution on the 17" Macbook Pro bothers you, you could just get the 15" and an external display. I just bought the 13" MBP and plan to use it with a 30" display at home.

Regarding insanelymac.com, it's not that complicated. Installation related questions go to OSX86 installation forums and everything else to Post-installation. Then there's the section for hardware specific questions and the new releases forum where you'll find the latest alternative kernels etc. Tutorials has lots of installation guides but they're usually for specific systems.

In reality installing OSX is easy. At minimum you only need an OSX retail DVD, a boot-132 CD with the right kernel extensions for your system and the right combination of hardware. You can find which motherboards work best from insanelymac (Gigabyte boards seem pretty good). After you have your system running you install Chameleon v2 boot loader and the right kexts and after that it should work fine without the boot-132 CD.

Yes, it does take learning to figure out how the system works so you really have to put in the time if you want to build a Hackintosh and save money that way. Or you can just buy a Mac and be done with it. Now that I have a MBP I'll most likely move away from using Hackintosh on my desktop and devote it to Windows 7 because the 2.26 GHz MBP will work for my everyday usage just as well as my 3.4 GHz quad core PC.

How do you set the boot flags with chameleon 2 rc2? There is no option as far as I can tell and the screen flashes up so fast before it starts booting that even if the screen showed that option it does not even have time to react to it

You probably have the timeout set too low. Edit your com.apple.boot.plist in /Extra or /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration. The one in /Extra should work.

im really debating going to 10.6 as there is really something to be said for having a stable 10.5.8 with no more updates to worry about

lol ill probably have to do it on a spare hdd though...argh me wanting the latest

^^ Same here.
I want to try it just so i can have the latest and greatest, but its not worth the stability issues. I'll wait for 10.6.2 at least until i switch over to Snow Leopard for my main OS. By then Apple should have most of their problems fixed and the Osx86 community will have a better grasp on what SL is all about.

Blimey. I was hoping for a build your own Hackintosh guide @ insanelymac. All that looks insanely complicated and unlikely to work well.

It's actually not that complicated once you figure out what your configuration will be. If you're sticking with an official release of OS X (right now stick with Leopard), known as Leopard Vanilla, and not a hacked version found online your configuration is fairly limited. Stick with an Intel configuration and not an AMD and your setup will be a lot easier.

Plus it's really hard to find out which forum you need to ask any questions.

You'll also be very lucky if someone responds. The people in InsanelyMac seem to be people fairly knowledgeable in Unix and coding and Terminal configurations. If you don't measure up they probably won't respond.

Is there another site anyone can recommend?

If you don't mind spending a little more and want to build a Core i7 system (which is what I did) then I'd suggest http://buildahackintosh.com/2009/07/09/the-12-step-program-for-core-i7-bliss/

This site also has configurations for cheap Hackintosh, a moderate Hackintosh, a fast Hackintosh and best (Core i7).

Another good resource is Hackint0sh.org.

I'm wondering if anyone has any success or any experience with installing OSX on a Lenovo Y510 laptop.
Here are my system specs.
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83ghz
3GB Ram
32 bit OS

If anyone can offer support it would very much be appreciated!
Thanks!

I think that has the X3100 and ALC882, so it should work. I dont know how difficult it will be, but it has hardware that should play nice.

could you help me and point me in the right direction of a tutorial maybe?
haha i'm still kind of new to the whole hackintosh idea.
