Is it just me? Or does it look a lot like the 12-inch MacBook but with Touch ID?
No not just you. I was thinking all the way through the presentation that they seemed to have forgotten that 3.5 years ago they released the MacBook with many of these same 'innovations'.

True because the ram speed is still the slower MHz at the link I provided.

The Apple site states the following:

1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz, with 4MB L3 cache

And also Intel UHD Graphics 617?

Which doesn't match my link so I have no idea tbh.

so the question is

16gb ram and 256gb SSD or
8gb ram and 512gb SSD or even just

8gb and 256gb ssd....

I feel it might’ve replaced it. They didn’t say anything about it replacing it though so I don’t know, they might have two almost identical laptops in the lineup now.

I was all set to buy one except for the keyboard.

I honestly believe putting that keyboard with its reliability downgrade into the main stream laptop could be a huge issue in terms of the MacBook Air reliability and the brand reliability with mainstream customers

I thought long and hard and looked at my Crystal Ball in August and got most likely my last MacBook Pro 13, upgrading from a 2013 Air, I would be very irritated if I had waited for this....

I need to purchase a new laptop for my high school senior to take to college and was waiting until this event to see what Apple would offer. Assuming we have decided to go Mac, am I better off getting him the new Air or the 12" MacBook. The MB is $100 more but comes with a 256GB SSD vs the MBA's 128GB.

Is the 8GB of memory sufficient (on both the MB and MBA) or do I need to upgrade to 16GB?

How much storage space does the base OS take up? Is 128GB of storage enough?

Apple's upgrade prices for SSD are ridiculous, if he needs more space can I get him an external SSD (like the Samsung T3-- 500Gb for $100)?

13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch with support for millions of colors
So Apple lied during the keynote, as the previous 1440x900 MacBook Air with every pixel quadrupled would be 2880x1800. Too bad, I was excited to see that resolution on a 13", as it would undoubtedly be coming to next year's MacBook Pros as well.
