Thanks for all the replies.

I bought this ipad from AT&T. In order to exchange it, are they going to charge me the 10% re-stocking fee? It has been lesst than 10 days since I picked the ipad up from the store.

Can they really charge a restocking fee if the item is badly manufactured and the customer is not happy with it?...This light should not be present! It's considered a defect! AT&T sound like a right bunch. I would personally wait until the 14day then bring it to an Apple store for replacement.

No, it's sad you feel the need to be mean to someone who just wanted advice!

A light leak like this can easily be seen, for example, when sitting at a desk with the iPad on the desk. If you are looking at it at around a 45 degree angle at a certain distance its very plain to see.
OP, take it back and get another one, it should not be like this...2 of my iPad 2s had this problem and I got them exchanged with zero hassle whatsoever.

The way the op said "I just noticed this today" makes it sound like they've been using the iPad without noticing it so far. If they've been using the device without this "problem" impacting upon them, they can continue to do so.

It's a tiny little glow for goodness sake, get real.

It's an exposed led. Not a tiny little glow. Exposed led = bad manufacturing = DOA. As real as that.

If its not causing any visible light bleeding then here should be no issues, if there is a visible bleed others will call you OCD.

It's sad that you even noticed this, never mind care about it enough to post a thread.

You guys must have some really cushty lives to worry about this kind of bullcrap.

And yet I'll bet you'd be the first to try to haggle a lower price if you were buying a used iPad that had this issue.

I had that at the top of mine.. It was about 3" wide... I brought it back.
I don't think AT&T will hit you with the restocking fee because it's defective.

I don't have it on mine. Personally I would worry about the future, what if the screen inside is exposed to dust or dirt or what not, and the that works its way onto your screen. What if it gets worse and does start to bleed into the screen but you've missed your return window? Does it affect the cameras picture taking ability? What if nasties get in there and mess up the camera? Hm. Things to think about for sure.

If you have an apple store near by, I'd go there before AT&T and I personally would return it. If I'm going to pay over 700$ for an item, it damned well better not have a manufacturing defect as drastic as that. Sure a bit of yellow tint, fine, sure a light bleed ok, but a line has to be drawn somewhere after all. I do not think wanting a very expensive item to be properly assembled is "OCD" or any other mental illness.. If my BMW had a misaligned window, but you could only hear the window whistling at 80 mph I would still want it fixed. Wouldn't you? (haha assuming I could get a BMW!)

If it doesn't bother you, since it's at such a wonky angle then do what you want to ;)

Great due to this post hundreds will be returning even more of their iPads for a problem that is a non issue. These forums are Apple's worst enemy!

Are you sure they can even get to MacRumors from on top of that huge pile of cash they're sitting on right now?

Trying not to come off as nitpicky, but if the OP used it for 10 days before noticing this, how is it DOA?

I have that too and I would exchange it if only mine is not engraved. Does anybody know if Apple would exchange engraved iPad and also exchange for an engraved one also or will they exchange without engrave this time? If not, then I'm ok with keeping mine, it does not bother me and it does not hinder to the function of my new iPad. ;)

I've noticed this on a lot of them as well. Went to a few stores to confirm.

If you're happy with the rest of the screen, I wouldn't return it. There's a good chance you'll end up with something worse.

Hi guys,

I have heard a lot about people having issues with their new ipad's screens.

I just noticed this today on my 3rd gen ipad. Has anybody else seen something similar?

It doesn't look like the bleeding problem that some people have mentioned. On the screen itself, everything is just fine. But once you look from this angle (that photo was taken), you will see this white light coming from the edge. Its right under the front camera.

Should I be worried about this?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Are you serious. Another lighting thread?
Did you even bother to look at the other thread?
Couldn't you have posted on one of those?

I had this issue and got it exchanged. The Apple Genius took a look at it, said she had seen similar ones to mine and had no problem replacing.

My wife and I both have this issue on our iPads. Here's a photo of mine:

It doesn't bother me enough to return it. Not in the mood to loose my engraving on the back :)

No need to wait for the 14th day, as the Apple Store is where AT&T tells you to go. AT&T employees hate it. AT&T's contract with Apple requires that ALL returns and exchanges go to the Apple Store, even for defects, or there will be a restocking fee. AT&T is NOT charging you a restocking fee "even though defective" - AT&T simply is not allowed by Apple to handle defective products, including DOA claims. Once the box is opened (which is supposed to be by you so you acknowledge this, but I've seen AT&T employees break that policy) it's yours. Yup, that means that in the (extremely unlikely) event they sell you an iPhone that won't even turn on, you have to just take it and go to the Apple Store to exchange it.

I bought a new iPad with a tiny piece of dirt under the screen and learned this the hard way. There's no Apple store anywhere near me. AT&T was extremely apologetic and stated if it was anything but Apple, they'd swap it for DOA no problem. AppleCare also acknowledged on all levels that this is Apple's policy and Apple's choice, not AT&T's stating they feel an Apple Store is the best environment to handle any issues with Apple products. I got transferred up when he saw my distance (over 200 miles) from an Apple store. Two exchange by mails (the first one simply said it was within specifications and sent it right back, though without the accessories I was told to send, the tech was great about saying his mistake and sending me a new charger and sync cable ASAP... I had to go to AT&T for a SIM) later and I got a perfect iPad. The second-level Apple tech support was great and followed me by email. But it was a long process for what would've been an in-store exchange at Best Buy.

I asked a friend who works for Verizon COR, and he says their policy is similar. This is how Apple wants to deal with the mobile carriers. And it sucks.

really? what does DOA stand for?

Dead On Arrival. In countries were there is no Applestore (like Greece), authorized Premium Resellers offer 7 to 10 day window for replacing a defective device. Once you return it to the store, approval is needed from the central Service of the authorized distributor (takes 1 to 2 days). When confirmed, you get a brand new replacement (takes at least 7 days).
