Whatever happened to Apple, it cant be undone... there is no Steve Jobs that can be bring back into Apple;(

the ipad has become boring, its just a blown up iphone nothing special about it, glad i sold mine
The next step for the iPad (aside from minor bumps in camera/memory/battery tech) is to become an actual laptop surrogate. It is close, but no bananas yet. I think it will take until next decade to get the chips up to speed, the memory in place, the software improved, and the battery maximized.

However, it is a nice semi-laptop-travel-bedtime-toilet-thing that gives you some reading material away from a tumorous clamshell.

What will the follow-up to this model be called? iPad 2 and The New iPad (3) is used. iPad (1) is retroactively called iPad 1 and have thicker bezels so no confusion there right now. Maybe it won't be updated in a long time and then be followed up by iPad SE. Would be easier if they just called it iPad '17 after year or iPad A9 after cpu for example.

The new iPad really isn't significantly inferior to its Pro counterpart in any way for hundreds of dollars cheaper than an equivalent Pro version, I'd say it's Anni-brainier. Unless you're bothered by the iPencil and official Pro keyboard. Other than this, I can't thing con many reasons to pay that much more for the Pro version.

A great update for people who want to upgrade from an A6 cpu. Or who want an iPhone 6 with newer hardware and a bigger screen. lol

Even the iPad Air (1) flies on 10.3. Grant d there is no. True multitasking. But for the money, the Procreally isn't worth it over this new 9.7 version.

New iPad is too thick and heavy, size and weight are everything when it comes to hand held devices that you spend a long time holding, especially an iPad, doesn't matter quite as much with a phone but still important.

Apple have got it wrong again, just like with the red iPhone having a white front.

They never quite get it right and give you what you want.
You mean what YOU want. But thanks for telling all of us what WE want.

This isn't for a macrumors audience. It's for normal people.

Apple has just been giving me fewer and fewer reasons to spend money on their 'new' products.
Then don't. Wasn't that easy?

Even the iPad Air (1) flies on iOS 10.3. Granted there is no split-screen multitasking, but the performance still mostly holds up for the majority of Apps.

But for the money, the iPad Pro probably isn't worth the additional money over the new 9.7 iPad. If you're not. Ordered about an Apple keyboard case and iPencil, then there is no reason at all to spend th extra cash.

I hope apple aims at their customer base, and not release "this ipad is for tech ppl only, that one is for kids".

Good for you? For me it's my computer. I don't get the "blown up iPhone argument", apps take advantage of the screen size and it's great for browsing and very good battery life. Plus iPad has split screen apps and picture in picture.

indeed, my mom has the air, i got the air 2, .. each time i check the os with public betas etc and compare things, there's no real difference in actual usage performance. benchmarks differ, but it's not like it's a generation apart.

A good low cost option and a no-brainer for someone who wants a cheap tablet that will last years.
Agree..... and it 'barely' thicker.... not a killer at all. (plus when those kids crack the screen - it's cheap to replace (not being laminated into one piece like the Air 2)

How exactly were you burned? My iPad 3 continued to work when iPad 4 came out.

As for this 'new' iPad, I think it will sell very well. I just hope people read the specs carefully before purchasing.

Do we know if it has 2GB RAM?

Aside from only accepting up to iOS 9 like the iPad2 released 1 year earlier & the 4 taking iOS 10?
Maybe storage size, processor, depreciation, security etc. I sure was pissed. If they knew a new one was coming they should've waited. Looking at the specs sure as hell don't help u any if apple discontinue it 6mths later!

LOL at Macrumors attempting (sadly) to pimp this piece of crap hardware. Remember all those complaints about the original iPad Air feeling and sounding hollow when you hit it with your finger? Yep, that's back. Apple must have had a boatload of these chassis laying around at Foxcon, so they stuck a bunch of chips from the iPhone 6 in them and are passing them off as a "new" iPad. And suckers are going to buy it.

Apple seems a little confused right now. Ditch the Air, but the thickness doesn't provide us with let's say more battery life or other advantages. Why not keep it as thin then?

Just because we don't want a thin MBP and we do want full functionality on these laptops doesn't mean they have to reverse the iPad?!?

Gotta love it. Apple releases something thinner and they're mocked for their obsession with thinness.
They release something that's the teensiest bit thicker (with commensurate price benefits) and they're criticized for not being thin enough.

TypicalApple 'fans'.

I find this very odd. I would expect the iPad Air2 to be reduced in price or increased in spec at the same price. This looks like reduced spec at a reduced price(?) Apple seem a bit disorientated and clutching at straws for ideas. Not easy after the big revolution of iPhone then iPad, but I don't think tweaking and fiddling with specs is the way forward. Let's hope it's just a stalling technique or placeholder in lieu of something new in September. I'd prefer it if they launched nothing new until they had something new....

Frankly, the extra thickness is negligable. I have the original iPad Air and it's certainly not thick or heavy by any means.

The biggest take away is the pretty decent A9 processor and 2gb of RAM...all for only $329.

The original Air has an A7 and 1gb of RAM.
The added RAM is really comes in handy when you have multiple tabs open in Safari. Pages like MacRumors don't have to refresh and require login again.
