Why is this new iPad display not laminated or antireflective? Wouldn't that be a good thing to have?

Yeah. If you mean that was on iPad Air 2 but removed from this iPad. That's why you're supposed to pay for the Pro model to get that now. They want to differentiate them I guess.

From my understanding iPad vs iPad Air 2

iPad Air 2
Screen: Anti-reflective coating, fully laminated display
size weight: smaller lighter
processor: Better Mutli-Threading, better GPU

iPad
Screen: Brighter
Processor: Better Single Threading

This is a great logistical move for apple, re-using many parts and with the following compromises, allows for the lower price. The iPad Air 2 seems to be the overall better machine. With the iPad Pro in play for upper end performance, this makes sense for a more budget minded build and helps the overall logistics/mass production.

For the iPad Mini, its a little more tricky since its the only one in its form factor, so there was nothing else to change to, however limiting it to only one memory size means one model, makes it cheaper to produce, the savings are also passed on but enable the price/earnings to remain constant, both consumers/device wins.

I would consider these moves as logistical enhancements and savings passed on to the consumer.

With that said I hope to see new iPads soon! (Pro and Mini)

EDIT: FYI BTW the laminated screen is more difficult/expensive to produce this makes the new iPad cheaper to scale and manufacture. Also the casing size is the same as the pro, so although the inches are re-added, this puts it in line with the size of the 9.7in pro which means thats now on one production front, as opposed to 2 different body versions. This helps offset prices. Economies of scale, could help them also lower the price of the Pros or more likely than not, enable them to put the savings into something better.

Because of my advanced knowledge and wisdom (I'm an old fart), I am getting to the point where my eyes get tired of staring at my ipad mini. I will probably upgrade to the new ipad just to have a physically larger display.

Actually, if you upgrade to an iPhone 6S Plus or 7 Plus your eyestrain will go away (if eyestrain is the problem). Pixel density is more important than screen size for iPads since all are viewed at the same distance. The Plus sized phones have a pixel density of over 400 ppi and are razor sharp. Zero eyestrain. iPads give me eyestrain. They call it a "Retina Display" but even old eyes can get eye strain from looking at them due to slight blurriness.

missing laminated display, slightly thicker, somewhat heavier, no Apple Pencil support, no true tone color shifting, no wide color gamut, slower processor, not as good camera, only two speakers

Grandma and the kids couldn't care less. This will be a huge success.

And since it is a new model, it will last for many future iOS upgrades.

Apple seems a little confused right now. Ditch the Air, but the thickness doesn't provide us with let's say more battery life or other advantages. Why not keep it as thin then?

Just because we don't want a thin MBP and we do want full functionality on these laptops doesn't mean they have to reverse the iPad?!?

It does indeed give you more battery. 20% more, exactly, from 27 Wh on iPad Air 2 to 32 Wh. They didn't increase thickness for nothing.

Apple should have atleast put an A9 in the Mini and just called it iPad Mini instead of iPad Mini 4.

I'm probably going to buy this to upgrade my iPad Air. The Air is pretty hobbled by only having 1GB of RAM, and this will solve that problem.

I have no need for the other pro features and the size and weight is identical to the Air which is fine for me.
Same here. My iPad Air really drags lately, but I don't need all the features of the IPP. A9 processor, 2gb(presumably) RAM, and a familiar design works for me.

I shop for value now as opposed to latest and greatest. i bought my iPhone SE on release day, so this is right in my wheelhouse. I won't be getting the iPad any time soon, but maybe once the refurbished ship in 3-4 mos.

For $329 it's a great value but Best Buy has the air 2 at $299 right now. I would get that before they run out.

I'm hoping for a new mini that is comparable to the pro specs. The size is just perfect for my needs.

This price for the new 9.7 is great though and if I were in the market I'd jump at it.

Perfect replacement at the right price for my mom's iPad 3rd gen from 2012. Won't satisfy too many MR readers though, lot of iPad Pro users abound.

Same for my mom. iPad 3rd gen is big, heavy, and still uses a 30-pin Dock Connector.

I think she's most happy about using the same Lightning cable as her iPhone!

iPad Pro
Mac Mini
Mac Pro
iMac

Unless this is the exciting things for pros Tim? Quit talking smack Tim, act!

I don't mind getting this new iPad to be honest. I was fine with the weight of my previous iPad Air (just sold couple weeks ago at $220 cash, 32gb cellular model). It was getting slow after I upgraded to iOS 10 and the memory space was filled up. With 2 Gb RAM, Touch ID, A9 chip, more space 128 GB at $559 (128 GB cellular model), its hard to pass up and upgraded to me and it can be last for a while. Wide color range or better camera , 4 speakers are nice to have, but I don't see myself to spend $270 extra to buy iPad Pro (128 GB cellular model).

Upgrading moms 3rd gen to this. Wasnt going to spend 549 on a 'pro' ipad. Have a air 2 myself, and will wait till this 10.5 comes out. That is if it is a good price.. if its around 650, then ill hang onto my air 2 for another while.

Still don't get why the iPad got thicker again with no added value under the hood at all....
Non-laminated display and no camera bump. The laminated, anti-reflective display was an expensive feature on the iPad Air 2.. now that's reserved for Pro models. Getting rid of the camera bump was probably a side effect of the thicker display and maybe adjusting battery sizes. The value is that the new iPad with twice the storage and new CPU is $100 cheaper for the base model than the Air 2 which started at $499.

what are you operating with your other hand while laying on the couch??
i see the joke you're getting at, but attempted such action and it's not comfortable.
if you're laying on your right side, only your left arm can hold the ipad mini up against the couch cushion. which means your right arm is sandwiched between the couch cushions and your body. basically the right wrist doesn't have the "freedom" of movement as your left wrist. certainly can do it, but just not that comfortable to do.

JUST SAYING.

Really mind boggling.. sometimes it feels like they are just taking the piss. Doesn't it.

For a company which praises itself for innovation this is a very strange update..

it's also a company that used to hold a leading spot in education. this is just their response to chromebooks.

I was going to make a snarky comment about the camera quality (or lack thereof) in the latest iPad; but then I remembered that Apple still has the balls to ship a $2,800 notebook with a 720p FaceTime camera.
They can get away with it too because typical apple users will shell out the money and say "thank you, may I have another?" Apple could put their logo on a stick, sell it for $500, and people would still buy it.

Seems like the refurbished iPad Air 2 is the best value now, more than ever.

The A9X over the A8X is a pretty big deal.

New iPad is too thick and heavy....

No it's not.

I looked at the Dell XPS 13 and it's a POS compared to my MBP13. I can live with a 720p camera that I rarely use for a build that's a work of art.

The Air 2 wins hands down at that price. I just don't think this new ipad is a match for the Air 2 which has achieved legendary status.

What does legendary status even mean? lol

$30 is nothing and the new iPad has the A9X. Best Buy is also running a deal on the new iPad with $25 gift card.
