Then they should have better tracking and protocols in their factories. If cores are going missing like this, what’s going on. Is someone pocketing these missing cores?

Cores should not just go missing. There is obviously something going on and someone needs to get to the bottom of it, and I’m not talking about the bin.

It might be easy to say just missing a core or two, but what happens if more go missing. Sorry, your iPhone isn’t multicore any more as they all went missing. This is why many tout the importance of single core performance. They are hiding something I think. There is a conspiracy here.

😜
Oh my… I’m shocked.
First of all, it doesn’t make much sense to cut off a core that DOES NOT MEET THE SPEC, making it “missing”. There is no processor core “missing”. The cores that can’t function properly or not at all due to various reasons will be disabled, and for end user, it only shows as fewer cores.

Moreover, because of the technology we use today to build these chips, the property of electrons and atoms become more relevant than ever. We could literally have two transistors that are not supposed to connect but do, due to how close they are. There is a reason why high end your so-called “not binned chips” are expensive: only so many of those chips meet all specifications and performance requirements. Other ones just won’t cut it for one reason or another. What you want is all chips are identical high end chips. That’s simply not possible due to physics, and no one can defy the rules of physics, even for Apple.

I would say it is a little unusual that the newest iPad doesn't have Apple Intelligence as that is there new thing that they are on. I've always been of the opinion that the iPad market is too crowded. For example, the iPad mini especially at its price, just doesn't make any sense. To me, if they just "merged" the iPad and iPad mini, so you simply have an iPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro (Good, better, best) then the line would make a lot more sense. But someone has to be buying these things so whatever...

Who is everyone? I’m not angry about it.

Based on previous comments from OP that I’ve seen they’re very big on AI, I assume they’re basing their experience on what their social circle thinks. Given that they also come across as very young they perhaps haven’t learnt yet that what their social circle thinks is rarely representative of the wider world, though to be fair some people never learn this.

Does this still have non laminated display? Which is for me the worst part of this iPad.

It’s good that it has a non laminated display because it’s cheaper to repair when the screen breaks and makes it a budget iPad
I actually like non-laminated displays for entry level iPads. Broken glass is a cheap repair when it is non-laminated.
Thank you 😁

Apple doesn't specifically order a 5-core variant of a chip.

But the A16 and especially for this iPad is the first 6 Core A Series CPU to be binned to 5 Core CPU ( but I believe the third gen Apple TV used one core of its A5 and the A10X Version only used three High Performance Cores while the efficiency cores are disabled not that it matters because it’s getting tvOS 18 whilst A10X iPad dropped from iPadOS 18).

Its A16 may be one less efficiency core but that is outright funny.

Because even the iPad Mini 6 ( if it’s 6 core A15, 5 core GPU scores better) is overall a better iPad and that iPad was released alongside the 9th gen one

Also I see Apple using these binned A16’s for future studio display’s to replace the one with the A13 and the OLED Monitor too

People think the new iPad Air M3 has the chip as the M3 MacBook Air/Pro but actually no it has a 9 cores GPU like the iPad Air M2. Ok that might be fine for the iPad Air but things are getting worse with the iPad A16…

Everyone is angry that the iPad A16 doesn’t has Apple Intelligence but things are getting worse :

- It has one binned CPU core

- It has one binned GPU core

So yeah the iPad A16 is slower than the iPhone 14 Pro/15… I don’t understand why they did that one the iPad A16.

PS : The iPad 10 has even 6 CPU cores… against 5 on this iPad… bruh difference won’t be very large I guess…
Dude it’s an iPad, they’re already ridiculously overpowered. This is a non issue.

So you know with age the iPad can slow down... Faster is always better !
It will slow down because of other limitations, primarily memory, not because of processor not being able to handle the load.

iPadOS is simply incapable of using the full processing power of Apple M series chips. By design.

It’s a chip that was designed for a full blown desktop OS with proper multitasking. Unless Apple converges iPadOS and MacOS, this chip will remain an overkill for a long, long time.

But aren't they just put into their own bin too?
That’s pringles and different flavors of lays. Original lays production and packaging is very simple.

Folks need to realize silicon chips are much more complicated in fabrication. The yields are super hard to control at core level, this is not Apple or Intel problem. Instead of rejecting the bins with different cores, Apple or Intel put them in different bins and not discard.

Ogle any product before purchase. Those little asterisks or numbers at the end of sentences will get you every time!
WOW....🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I think as a bottom of the barrel kind of thing product, I think that's fine that we're not using the newest and greatest.

But I also think there's a limit to how bottom we go. Usually when there's no clear cut points of "innovation" they can easily get away with it and the only point of reference is only when things start to not stay loaded properly like not enough RAM or slow down like the processor's not fast enough.

Unfortunately this time round Apple Intelligence is there as a clear line, a marker for planned obsolescence.

I honestly doubt the absence of a core or two will result in any noticeable hit to performance. I guess it's good to know, but ultimately feels like a nothing burger to me.
For people who doesn’t have an iPad or are coming from android this iPad is good yes. But for example you bought the iPad mini 6… then you want to buy the new iPad… well normally since the iPad is 3.5 years more recent… the iPad should be better than the mini ! For example the iPad 10 is truly better than the iPad mini 5 ! But now it’s not the case at all :

- Yes you get a larger screen but you are loosing the P3 wide color and the Antireflective coating (Which means a better screen for the 3.5 years old mini)

- Yes you are getting an A16 instead of an A15 but the A16 has one less CPU core and one less GPU core (which might finally result in similar performances)

- You are loosing the flash but ok you are getting a 128gb base model.

So finally both iPads are similar and the problem is that they have a 3.5 years old difference! This is incredible!

More incredible : Apple is selling the iPad mini 6 refurbished more expensive than the iPad A16 which is a proof that they have a similar value

No, as you've shown, it would be a mistake to assume that the base iPad and iPad mini are in the "same lineage". The iPad mini has always been a premium product over the base iPad.

What you're demonstrating is that potential buyers need to spend a few minutes doing some research before buying.

Or not, but an uninformed decision on the part of the purchaser isn't likely to produce the best results.

As always, the buyer needs to invest at least a few minutes.

I know iPad mini is better but on iPad mini 12345 the normal ipad got quickly better than the mini… now it’s not the case with the mini 6 which is a new iPad problem !

iPad mini 6 (2021) was better than the newer iPad 10 (2022) though.

The iPad mini is generally mid-range. The regular iPad is their entry level and typically has lower specs than the mini. The iPad mini 5 (2019) had A12/3GB while the iPad 7th gen (2019) was just A10/3GB.

The iPad 8th gen (2020) matched iPad mini 5 but the following year in 2021, the iPad mini 6 got A15/4GB while the 9th gen was just A13/3GB.

P.S. The 2015 iPad mini 4 had a better display (fully laminated, anti-reflective) than all subsequent regular iPad models.

So first thing, most people, especially at that price point, will NOT BE ANGRY about missing Apple intelligence (aka AI).

And second thing, the alternative of using binned chips is Apple throw them away. Why throw away chips that can otherwise be repurposed and functional to some extent?

Overall this is a non-issue. Borderline first world problem I might add.
Agreed. Every time I update my phone, I get a prompt to set Intelligence up, and every time I turn it off immediately. Siri's voice is there to navigate me in the car, that's all I need there.

As for an ipad, I will likely next get an Air 13" so I can read full-sized sheet music on it, though I do admit I'll likely lament the audio quality downgrade from my 11" Pro.
