The new Mac mini is almost certainly coming

Are you unaware of what the latest Intel low power chips are capable of? They blow the 2012 Mini clean out of the water. They can do full smooth 4K @ 60hz while doing all the real work you need them to. Look st the NUC boxes. They stomp all over the Mini.

It's not just the u series mobile chips in the latest NUCs. Take mini-STX boards. They allow a case nearly as small as a Mini, while using a cheap standardized board, instead of the custom stuff Apple always does. You can pair that with a cheap Pentium g4560 (s series, $64 list, more right now because of demand), and that's literally faster than ANY of the 2014 Minis. That's not to mention .265 support, 4K/60Hz, usb-c, etc, etc

I know what I am talking about (guessing), a new mac mini would not have JUST a 2 core cpu, if it did we would not see a new mac mini or we would already have seen one. It would have to have at least as an option a quad core and of course being able to do 4K@60. That's why I said what I said and I stand by it. :)

Well Apple offered quad-core Mac Minis alongside quad-core iMacs so, again, even a quad-core Mac Mini would not suddenly preclude people from buying an iMac unless the only reason they are getting an iMac is for four cores and they don't use the display. Something I just don't see happening - at that point, I fully expect people to either go Hackintosh (if they have the technical knowledge) or Windows (if they do not).

So I just don't see Apple denying a quad-core Mac Mini to protect iMac sales. The reason we don't have a QC option anymore is Apple doesn't feel the market warrants one.

Apple has stopped showing us the stuff we didn't know we needed - and also stopped giving us what we need. That's a drastic change and any moves they make, in my opinion, will be suspect for quite some time. It'll be a tough decision to drop more than $2000 for a Mini replacement.

Apple, Apple, wherefore art thou, Apple? :(

True, the OP has long since disappeared, but the Mac Mini is still around more than a dozen years after its introduction…. and a decade after predictions of its demise started. It will almost certainly be updated sooner or later, and be around for a good while longer.

So it's safe to assume that no new Mimi's will release ? The MAC Mini is now a defunct product line . Would Apple even state (press release) if a product is discontinued or they decide to stop refreshing it? Or is it going to be something that just vanishes like a fart in the wind ...

If and when it is discontinued, it will go like the Thunderbolt Display and iPod did - with an MR post that it's no longer in production and being phased out of the stores.

Its amazing that one man can shape the ethos of a company but the company can't carry it forward. Its also shocking that stockholders earnings can cause a company to forget what made it great in the first place. Its been a "sad day" for a long time and the willingness of folks like us to continue to wait for that greatness again is simple testimony to whats been lost.

Why? I don't get the significance of the specific amount of time and date. Why would one not "lose hope" now instead of then? Why would one lose hope then instead of next year?

If we wait 20 years an no new Mini then is it dead? How about 10y? 8y? 6y? 4y?

We're one day closer than yesterday so we might as well hang around a bit longer.

The Mac is great, but it alone didn't make Apple great - or solvent. If not for first the iPod and then the iPhone to support it, both the Mac and Apple itself might very well not be with us today if it had been the only thing Apple had in it's portfolio.

The genius was the integration of those pieces with the overall software which was a holistic vision brought into good practice. It's the arrogance that can come with success and the humility of defeat that define things thus the cycle with Apple, as before, it may repeat itself - the issue is how long is that cycle and will we still be nimble enough to enjoy that next divergence of brilliance.

The Apple ecosystem is a strong foundation almost to the point where the devices are simple wrappers for the software - ultimately that is what I want. Looking forward, the hardware is where we split hairs and ultimately once these small issues are eliminated there's the larger issue of our love for the keyboard and the sequential human input - simply put "we" will be the bottleneck.

Once we figure out how to eliminate our need for tactile computing we may be in a position to actually eliminate the desktop/mobile controversy once and for all. I for one don't want to talk to my computer and I sure as hell don't want it talking to me (its weird.. I'd only accept that in humanoid format) - this is something interesting if only to me - what is it about that keyboard?

I'm afraid the issues we'll be facing in the next decade or two will eclipse the banter and chatter about things as mundane as resolution, thinness and battery-life. The human-interface is a problem and a solution that will change our humanity forever somewhat like the smartphone has but insanely more powerful, far-reaching and regrettable I'm afraid.

Right now we wonder where Apple is going - soon we'll be wondering where humanity is going.

yup... we're somewhere off-topic but as long as we say "the new Mac mini is almost certainly coming" I think we're good.

and since the new mini isn't here just yet - i digress ...

At some point should mankind survive climate change, N. Korea and Trump we'll have to consider it (the "bridge" or human-to-computer interface) an evolutionary step - the augmentation of the human body with technology is an unnatural progression but a necessary one which will surface in the military and healthcare, most likely simultaneously.

Our ability to focus on multiple streams of information has already hit a threshold (think - air traffic control, fighter pilots and crossing the street) - direct interface may allow us to assimilate more information - tapping in at the "intuition level or background processing level" may infer greater safety perhaps.

Said interface will finally replace the keyboard and sequential data entry - we'll more than likely "stream" information in one form or another. Imagine - no backspace and delete key.

The keyboard keeps us in-touch with our physical linearity (limitation) - but our minds are fluid - augmentation will tease enhancements which our bodies cannot sustain.

The moment the interface is created and embedded into a human - mankind will forever be changed - there will be those that "are" and those that "are not" until the tide of change becomes complete.

I don't see this ending well - awareness of our surroundings and human interaction has already taken a hit just by holding a smartphone in our hands and looking at the world through the lens.

Call me old fashioned, but I for one will never consent to any such form of direct plug into my neural system. That is just asking for endless trouble of the most serious kind.

If you watched the movie matrix you should be able realize we could already be implanted and linked into the net. So for the time being I rather just talk about the new mac mini and not face questions of our interface with reality.:)

Living in a world where everyone else is plugged in is almost just as bad.

My wife's niece(19) came to visit this weekend for the second time ... I kid you not ...

After picking her up ... 15 minutes until iPad lights up
At dinner table ... 3 minutes until iPhone lights up
Watching UnCrime ... 20 minutes until iPad lights up
Tennis court (1st time for her) ... 13 minutes until she hit the bench in fetal position w/ iPhone
On the way home ... never put iPhone down

and so on .... and she came to visit us!

THE NEW MINI IS HERE!!!

No, wait... I time travelled 2 years too far back. I'll post this again in two years. Ignore it.

Actually, after three years and a couple processor updates, it's almost certain that the mini will come out this fall. Probably in Oct-Nov. I just wish they would release them with the newer Coffee Lake chips coming out on Monday.

But they won't.

Positive attitude but unlikely at best. Time will tell:)
