But like I said... does it make sense for Apple to keep selling $500 desktop computers? Isn't that market pretty much dried up?

Perhaps that's why they have shown such little interest in the last few years... :p

I don't know if the market is dry or not. Certainly there is not much of a margin at 500. And Apple is all about the margin in their product.

What i would ask, is if they are going to take so long to update their products, could they reverse the "solder everything" design. Let me update my machine if you are not going to make updates more than once every five years (2014 was not an update). I type that knowing that it will never happen, but it would be nice to have a choice other than (1) buy a laptop that will never leave my desk, (2) buy an expensive all in one machine (3) lurk on MacRumors waiting for the day i will be exited to learn they are updating the mini.

I agree but Apple has really developed a very dynamic Arm chip that goes way beyond the 90s. So has Qualcomm Snapdragon chips that power instant on Windows computers.
These types of computers may prove to do as well as Core M Intel chips.
I sure more will be coming at CES this year.
I not saying all computers are headed this way but they do have the advantage of instant on and all day battery for portables.

The last thing I want in a desktop computer of all things is an OS that's walled up like Fort Knox and requires a different app do to just about anything, while having the most limited "multitasking" of any desktop OS since they've had GUIs.

Desktops don't need all-day battery life like phones do.

I see this happening on the Macbook first and mobile only to start.

i can see it now ... in a year I'll have a NUC in the media room ... then Apple will throw a headless desktop out there that pales in comparison to raw power, graphics ability, ports and upgradeability ... by then my iPhone will need to be replaced where I'll make that fateful decision to go forward with Apple or make the switch entirely. With Johnny Ive back in the seat I somehow don't think we'll see another Mini - the whole headless category may no longer resemble anything desirable.

If Apple refreshes the Mac Mini I expect I’ll put in an order pretty quickly. My Minis are getting old, especially the 2009 ones.

Just noticed this front page article about Apple increasing trade-in values of used Macs: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/12/12/apple-mac-trade-in-now-up-to-2500/

Guess how much you can get for your Mini? Nothing. You can trade your MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro or even a PC. But not the Mini. That really speaks volumes about what Apple thinks about the Mini. https://www.apple.com/mac/trade-up/
They should give you a couple of cents to recycle the aluminum case.....lol

My mint condition mini is worth $95 trade. No thanks not when Apple is selling $5,000 iMac Pro's.

So you're saying that when you follow Apple's link to Phobio, you can actually get a quote on a Mini? That makes the omission of the Mini on Apple's page even more notable. o_O
It did not accept my serial number but the 2009-2014 Mini's can be selected manually.

That is really funny. Something not selling? Put it in Space Grey. Problem solved :) It really does seem that way :) Between Space Grey and Emoji's, how can we lose?
Hey Dave...notice the new set up in your sig. Got an extra M.2 slot on that MB. Easiy to add a Sierra hack to your setup for dual boot. Would not recommend High Sierra though. Gen 8 Intel already supported for macOS.

Scary thoughts ... if a iMacPro can go for 5K and it can't be upgraded - imagine such a machine that's open to upgrades and expansion ... clearly it would have more value and perhaps a longer lifespan ... would Apple offer that alongside the iMacPro and if they did at what cost to make it attractive to Apple and not threaten their "proported" Pro machine.

My God - if there is a modular Mac Pro one day I think the cost will be totally "Pro-hibitive" !!

ya know... as time goes on the cost to compute should go down - just like speed goes up. We're being raped and sometimes its OK but at this point I'm keeping my shorts.

Yeah, that 2nd slot is way cool. It was great for transferring all my stuff from the old 950 to the new 960 :) I actually think Win 10 is the superior OS at this time. So I will not be dual booting :) Well, maybe Ubuntu :)

Overall, I am very happy with the new rig. Quietest computer I ever have not heard :) Runs fast and cool too.
