Naw there are some really smart people who produce great content on tablets and phones. Some kids are freaks with these devices.

At some point soon kids will prefer to keep using iOS on a tablet than use a laptop in college, even technical kids. Most of them don't even use tablet keyboards- they use text completion and soft keyboards. Even to write code you don't need a keyboard because most editors insert curly braces and do a lot of auto completion. MacOS will be dead before a lot of people are ready, unless something new happens. Maybe more powerful iOS apps will come out that require a local mac to do a lot of the work. MacOS can only live on if it can make iOS better. If that happens, there will come a day when apple courageously ditches the keyboard and trackpad, only iOS devices are input/output! Apple already has all this figured out but they won't tell us. Actually they do tell us, they say the future is the iPad pro. Real apple fans should get an ipad pro and use it for everything except for the IDEs and stuff that aren't there yet.

I was able to configure a fully decked out mac mini with a 4th generation Core i7 processor for a whopping AED 9,700. As a point of reference, the base 15" MBP w/ Touch Bar is AED 9,974. Simply atrocious - but gotta admit, takes some real courage.

I use a desktop at work and two at home. I'm considering a third one for home.

But I'm old and weird. Desktops are definitely in their twilight:

Even if you count desktops and laptops together, its not much.

What exactly is that chart showing? Ownership? Usage? Or what?

Personally... I have a desktop PC, a laptop, an iPad and an iPhone.

And I use all four of them in different ways.

I'll have an iPhone within 2 feet of myself at all times... but I spend most of my day working in front of a PC. They are different devices for different tasks.

If that chart was describing teenagers... then I'd agree with only 15% of them using laptops and desktops.

But if we're talking about worldwide adult computer usage... there are a billion PCs that get a lot of action.

the marketplace has already answered "yes" by continuing to purchase the 2014 Mini.
Heck, I'm buying Raspberry Pi's. At $35-80 they're hardly speed demons, but you can play music, surf web, word process, and watch movies.
For most jobs, a 2014 mini is more than enough.

Desktoppers Unite. I'm not that old and happily weird. :p

I skew the exact opposite of that graph: iMac desktop more than anything else. Followed by iPad, PC laptop, and last and definitely least, the iPhone (which is why when I buy my next iPhone, I'm spending as little as possible.)

I am all for the Mac Mini being upgraded.

No need to ask that question, the marketplace has already answered "yes" by continuing to purchase the 2014 Mini.
I think Mac users are looking for some positive reinforcement from Apple about the Mini. A new version will make us feel proud to have the Mini we have today, and lead to a spike in 2014 sales. A new model would make us feel good about ourselves because 1) Apple is committed to the platform and 2) We didn't wait as we knew what was coming would't be better.

Sometimes it's better to not have a new model!

Until (if) Apple are to update the mini, they are unlikely to talk about it before it's due to launch.
That would just kill all the current Mini sales.

But the new Mac mini is almost certainly (possibly!) coming!

I don't believe they will prefer a tablet instead of a laptop if given a choice for coding.

And the view that mobile will take over seems to be false. Here are some analytical views if you're serious enough.

Cooling down: Mobile-first and tablets

A few years back, lots of organizations were trying to build their software to be mobile-first. The thought was that everything would move to mobile in a few short years, effectively making computers and other office staples obsolete.

Similarly, people expected tablets to take off as the new way to do business because they were mobile, powerful and relatively easy-to-use.

“We didn’t see either of these trends play out, though,’’ says Rothstein. “In fact, we are now seeing this trend reverse, as software has returned to a desktop-first model, only supporting the development of mobile and tablet apps afterward.”

"However, we need to be careful with interpreting data on hours spent, since we spend most of our time on smartphones checking email and using social media. This has led to the common mantra of 'Mobile-First' design which I think is dangerous, or at least oversimplistic! Eric Schmidt, then Chairman of Google talked about a Mobile-First approach."

"The data clearly shows that Smartphone conversion rates are much lower than for desktop - important if you're making the business case for a mobile responsive site."

In the same article, it looks like even tablets are not a real threat to desktops.

So.... three portables and one desktop?

mini2014i5 1.4GHz is ranked #6 in Amazon's mini desktops. i5 2.6GHz is #4, 3.0GHz i7 is #56 and i5 2.8GHz is #93.
The problem is that people are clueless enough to buy these...
