On this thread, I posted asking for advice about buying a Mac Mini. I then purchased a 2012 Mac Mini. I used it, somewhat. I wrote advise about the 2012 Mac Mini on this thread. I sold my 2012 Mac Mini recently, and this thread is still going. Circle of life?
To this day my main desktop is a 2012 Mac Mini 2.6GHz i7 quad-core with maxed 16GB and two self-installed SSDs. It's badass for audio work using Logic. I ordered it new a month before the 2014 Mac Mini was released and I was so glad I did. I read MacRumors (and the tea leaves) and went for it.

The main limitation is the RAM limit. But I refuse to buy a 21" iMac to get max 32GB. The 27" iMac allows user-installable RAM up to 64GB. Fantastic, but I have a Dell monitor that allows me to adjust the height, angle, and even set to vertical orientation. If I wanted a dual-monitor setup I would get another one of those to be able to place them on my desk as I see fit.

Apple doesn't have an upgrade for me today, and hasn't offered anything suitable for me as an Apple Logic user since that 2012 Mac Mini was discontinued. The latest laptops are faster, but don't offer any more RAM than the Mini. The 2013 Vader is quiet, which is great. But it's total overkill for me with the dual graphics cards, plus it's using 5 year-old tech and ports at this point and would require expensive RAM upgrades. The cheese grater Mac Pros seem to be the best option, but will be unsupported soon and they are power hungry. The iMac Pro is aimed more toward graphics and video pros. Plus the price makes it out of the question for me.

I'd like new Mini or new mid-level modular Mac with USB-C ports, more RAM, and updated specs please. I'm not budging for hardware I don't need or is out of date. The new modular Mac Pro sounds promising, but I doubt Apple will charge anything less than a premium price for the base model for the "privilege" of having user upgradability.

EDIT : Listed the proper max processor of the 2012 Mac Mini.

Interesting to note ... as time moves on retailers are losing to Amazon ... they are "the new frontier" because they will bring disruptive change to the way many purchase ... now with the keys to your door (Ring) they will soon arrange entrance to your home ... all this presumably will keep you indoors more so along with the state of the world ... so Apple ... please stop telling me about my mobile future when I find it more and more likely I'll be indoors.

As time moves on I'm becoming less mobile because of innovation - so the least they could do is make binge computing totally flexible as the Mini provides..
At least 99.99% of my computing is via my desktop (Mini), on an ADSL landline.

I have a very basic, cheap, and dumb mobile (cell) phone that averages about two calls/texts per week, plus a base model 13" Air for my very infrequent travel and as a backup computer if the Mini drops dead.

I wouldn't say the mobile revolution has completely passed me by, the mobile phone in particular can be very useful when needed. But I am about as far from mainstream mobile action as I can be and still remain plugged into that world.

I crack up every time this thread pops back up to the top. I bet we hit 15,000 posts in this thread before an updated Mac Mini appears....

I'm amazed at this point that anyone would buy a new Mini given how much contempt Apple has shown for Mini users, and anyone at all who isn't just circling the iOS drain.

The way Apple has gone the past couple years, I'm out. I still have an iPhone and a MacBook Pro but they likely will be replaced by non-Apple products. I can only get pushed around so long before the relationship is bitter.

Apple's been loaded with contempt for consumers since the day they decided to put the torx binding the Macintosh so deep that you had to make a special tool to open the case and void your warrantee by adding more memory.
It's been 35 years of mutual conrempt.
Why not a little longer?

I simply couldn't wait and did buy an refurbished iMac 2017 (4k). Apple and Tim Cook won.

I personally would never let that happen. As I said mr cook could hand deliver the highest end iMac to me and I would show him to the door out with that iMac.

They simply don't sell what I need anymore. Sad but true.

I just read that Apple was allowing an App to mine Monero without the consent of the device owner and allowed it for more then 1 day on many devices nice score for someone..

Meanwhile my 2 omen gamer pc's have earned back more then 1000 usd since I got them. And my lenevo m700 tiny earns a steady 60 cents a day for more then 500 days. So a 300 dollar rebate for that pc.

Thanks Apple and mr cook

I will be most glad to keep using my mac mini 2012/2014 if not for a lack of TB3

Yup, that's why I bought 2 of them with SSD's because I was feelin that price-point increase on the MacPro. ... and I'll tell ya Comcast just doubled the download speeds in my area for free which means rendering pages is even faster. So - over the long haul and for the time-being I've negated Apple's disdain for the desktop.

I also saved 15% with Geico!

Honestly, that product is probably the best value in Apple’s entire ecosystem.

That, or the iPhone SE that I bought today. Quite the upgrade from the pre-owned iPhone 4s I’ve been rocking for the past 2 years.

Indeed it is .. and that clearly explains why we "cling ons" remain here pounding that request, requirement and need to death! I doubt "value" remains part of Apple's product-line going forward in terms of backwards compatibility, full-compliment of ports and a robust engine that you can grow. Boutique offerings that ebb and flow at the whims of a design engineer cannot sustain the interest of those who seek a strong foundation to support previous investments and migrate to newer technologies. Apple's prior flagship product (MacPro) was an unnecessary out-of-pocket expense at the cost of stagnation or worst yet abandonment - that stumble will take years of meaningful product delivery to forget - so an entire desktop realignment (emphasis) will help everyone forget - which also may mean "forget value" as in Mini!
[doublepost=1521035657][/doublepost]Let's not forget the visionary and very brilliant minds of Steve and Steven and how they changed our perceptions of the world we live in. We know Apple can do better as they have done well ... I'm sure the same holds true for all of us!

I picked a Samsung EVO 1TB SSD recently, now just waiting for an empty spot in the schedule to drop it in. :)

You might try running it as an external for a while - my first EVO 1TB died after 10 days. PITA to remove it again and wait for the RMA replacement, then re-install it.

the problem is I don't need that screen size

21.5 is too big or too small? For me, it's perfect.

The refurb is a great value. It's roughly $1450 CDN. The 21.5 4K LG monitor alone goes for something like $900 CDN. Only better value would be a 2018 Mac Mini with TB3 usb-c ports for $500-$600.

I have a house filled with monitors. So my need for a new monitor is zero.
My eyes suck double cataract surgery will do that. 3 years at sea in the Navy was hard on my eyes. So I sit here typing this answer watching travelers on net flix . I have a 50 inch tv which works well for me.
Would love to upgrade to any screen less unit when I get a 65 inch 4k tv but apple insists on not selling a normal pc. the mac pro is better then I need. the mac mini is too weak. and the iMac has screens I do not need

Don’t count me in on that. But the new Mac mini, or the shark, is almost certainly coming.
And make no mistake, even if the above is true, this is/has been one of the most awesome threads (on any subject) the net has ever seen. A classic in its own time. Let us all hope and pray that Apple gets away from the emoji's, headphones and watches and back to... wait for it... COMPUTERS! And by computers, I really mean small, mini, micro, silent, powerful computers :)
