To this day my main desktop is a 2012 Mac Mini 2.6GHz i7 quad-core with maxed 16GB and two self-installed SSDs. It's badass for audio work using Logic. I ordered it new a month before the 2014 Mac Mini was released and I was so glad I did. I read MacRumors (and the tea leaves) and went for it.On this thread, I posted asking for advice about buying a Mac Mini. I then purchased a 2012 Mac Mini. I used it, somewhat. I wrote advise about the 2012 Mac Mini on this thread. I sold my 2012 Mac Mini recently, and this thread is still going. Circle of life?
The main limitation is the RAM limit. But I refuse to buy a 21" iMac to get max 32GB. The 27" iMac allows user-installable RAM up to 64GB. Fantastic, but I have a Dell monitor that allows me to adjust the height, angle, and even set to vertical orientation. If I wanted a dual-monitor setup I would get another one of those to be able to place them on my desk as I see fit.
Apple doesn't have an upgrade for me today, and hasn't offered anything suitable for me as an Apple Logic user since that 2012 Mac Mini was discontinued. The latest laptops are faster, but don't offer any more RAM than the Mini. The 2013 Vader is quiet, which is great. But it's total overkill for me with the dual graphics cards, plus it's using 5 year-old tech and ports at this point and would require expensive RAM upgrades. The cheese grater Mac Pros seem to be the best option, but will be unsupported soon and they are power hungry. The iMac Pro is aimed more toward graphics and video pros. Plus the price makes it out of the question for me.
I'd like new Mini or new mid-level modular Mac with USB-C ports, more RAM, and updated specs please. I'm not budging for hardware I don't need or is out of date. The new modular Mac Pro sounds promising, but I doubt Apple will charge anything less than a premium price for the base model for the "privilege" of having user upgradability.
EDIT : Listed the proper max processor of the 2012 Mac Mini.
