Nobody expects (or wants) the Mac Mini to be a Mac Pro clone. That was never its purpose.

It seems the majority of us just want a legitimate upgrade on the 2012 Mac Mini. We’ve been waiting 6 years.

I don’t get why people are having such a hard time understanding this. That is all I’ve been wanting. I was sitting there waiting, in 2014, cash in hand, ready to get the latest Mini when I discovered that there wasn’t anything that would be an upgrade to my 2012 with 2.6ghz QC i7, with user upgradeable ram. I’ve been waiting ever since for a Mini that is truly an upgrade from that machine. It has been 4 years since I’ve been this excited about a keynote.

A nice illustrated history of the Mini up to (and including) the 2018 Mac Mini.

https://www.macstadium.com/macminihistory
Good timeline, but missing a few things. The first is the release of the Early 2009 Mac mini on March 3, 2009, back when going a full year and a half without a refresh was almost unheard of for a Mac, because Apple actually refreshed it often enough to stay competitive most of the time.

Second, the release of the Apple TV 4th generation on September 9, 2015. With the Apple TV increasing in capability and able to run apps, it has become clear the Mac mini would no longer serve as Apple's HTPC offering for the majority.

Third, the crippling of MacOS Server announced in April 2018 and completed with the release of MacOS Mojave Server last month, which signifies Apple's lack of interest in anything server-related, including the Mac mini.

My reasoning was the low-power silent version would only make sense for people using it as a light media /production computer. For anything more serious you'd want a more beefy 65W TDP processor.

Of course it would be awesome if they offered the whole range in both passive 35W and active 65W processors. The T versions are actually the same price.

so that would be more like this:

Core i3-8300 (active) / 8300T (passive) w/8GB $599
Core i5-8500 (active) / 8500T (passive) w/16GB $799
Core i7-8700 (active) / 8700T (passive) w/16GB $999

FWIW I'm not expecting them to offer passive options, they might have 35W options available in the same form factor as the current mac mini. But I'd definately trade in some height for a completely silent Mac.

they have been really killing the mac pro and the mac mini for years. The iMac screen is far to small for me. I like to use tv screens for my pc. I am using a 46 inch sony with this 2014 base mac mini.

but starting tomorrow I will be using the dell optiplex i7 8700t with 32gb ram a 240 nvme m.2 ssd for 0s and a 512 gb intel ssd for storage along with 32gb.

Here is the problem I have with apple lets say they copy the specs of the dell optiplex 7060 micro I purchase when do they do an update next 2025?

Dell will have a better optiplex in under 18 months. I have a 3 year warranty with dell. Frankly apple has lost the pc game fully and completely. Sad but true.

Congrats! That is gonna be one super fast computer!

Lost the PC game doesn’t make any sense, since Apple doesn’t play the PC game. It’s like saying Apple lost the $100 commodity cellphone game.

Those who don’t care about running MacOS have always been able to buy cheap commodity hardware for running Linux/Windows/FreeBSD/whatever. I’m sure you know this isn’t some recent development.

That said, I think the $1,799 iMac 5K is a great hardware value, assuming you want/are willing to pay for its excellent 27” 5K monitor.

Apple has been in the PC game since day one. It's only the past few years they've been actively giving up with their what's a computer nonsense.

Those who don’t care about running MacOS have always been able to buy cheap commodity hardware for running Linux/Windows/FreeBSD/whatever. I’m sure you know this isn’t some recent development.

Much of the past 40 years, with the exception of the Sculley Dark Ages, Apple hardware has had a premium of around 30% over commodity PC hardware. Many people, myself included, were quite happy to pay that extra markup for some excellent hardware. The recent development is the return to the Sculley Dark Ages where the hardware is complete crap compared to commodity PC hardware and the markup is getting insane even compared to good PC hardware.

That said, I think the $1,799 iMac 5K is a great hardware value, assuming you want/are willing to pay for its excellent 27” 5K monitor.

I would be willing to pay for an excellent 5k monitor. The thing is the display in the iMac 5k is permanently affixed to hardware that is mediocre, though acceptable by today's standards and will be garbage in 3-5 years. That 5k monitor will still be excellent 10 years from now but completely useless as more than a doorstop because of the obsolete hardware attached to it.

This epitomizes the problem with modern day Apple. If I could buy a comparable computer and display even for $2000, i would be good value. the iMac at $1800 is not.

to illustrate my problem with apple and their decision to be a phone company vs a pc company intel i7 9700 specs were leaked today 8 cores 16 threads. i7
i5 6 cores 12 threads
i3 4 cores 8 threads.

next year optiplex will put these into their gear as the t versions. I won't need it but in 3 years when the warranty dies on my i7 8700t I will use it for a linux coin wallet And upgrade to some insane fast i7 12 core.

and Apple will be saying when do we see an upgrade from the 2018 model this thread will still be here and people will be bitching and moaning.

the shame is I talk to 20 year old people that tell me all I need is an iPad and my iphone so they are drinking the coolaid.

As for a quality screen the 27 inch iMac sucks if you have vision issues like I do.

I am so much better off setting 6 feet from a big tv screen I laugh at people that think the 27inch screen is good it is not if you have had 2x cataract surgery with one eye having a lens that sees 20-15 and the other with a lens that sees 20-100.

I would go as far to say apple is hurting a lot of people with vision issues that don't want 27 inch screens.

Well only 11 more hours until we can shut this thread down!

I think not ... there will be those who will say the new Mac Mini never came - those who will say this is the last belch for desktops because Apple showed us they just don't care - those who expected iOS to overtake MacOS and thus the new Mini never came again - and there will be those who say Apple has finally listened to the Pro-sumer and in this case they will breathe new life into this thread basically performing forensics on the new and old for days ... for days and on.

Assuming Apple deliver what I want, and my 2012 Mini keeps running, then I won't be buying straight away.

Will be waiting for any issues in the new models to be ironed out, and for the right model to turn up in the refurb store.

Why so?

This thread has already seen the coming of one new Mac Mini. It will almost certainly endure to see the coming of another ..... and another...... and another..... ad infinitum, for the time being.

After an initial, thorough post mortem, my guess is the utility and signal to noise ratio of this thread will tend toward zero until the next expected release. I doubt Apple will chase each 5% of marginal performance improvement from Intel with yearly updates like MBP, but there will be some step function updates that are meaningful, such as Ice Lake in 2020/2021 or if/when Apple transitions to its A-series CPUs. If those major events pass without an update to the mini, it’s dead man walking/EOL time, and the mini will have had a good run.

Time will tell how much value this thread will have post-2018 release; I suspect it will be inversely proportional to the volume of continued/incessant butthurt posts re: the 2014 mini, and the four (six) year gap, by those with a persecution complex.

I love my Mac Mini 2012. Bought it on the refurb store for a good price (insanely good compared to current Mac prices). Upgraded to SSD and extra RAM. You know the drill. It’s running lovely on Sierra (haven’t quite dared to jump on Mojave yet, but I might soon).

I’ve no idea how long this trooper of a computer will last. Presumably I can extend the life by upgrading the SSD again once it starts to creak, but I don’t know if other components also degrade the performance over time.

So one day I’ll be looking for a replacement. I’d love that to be a new Mini, but only if it’s a true upgrade on 2012. I’d like to believe Apple will listen to their audience and make the Mini user-upgradable... but I don’t. If there’s no decent Mini option I’ll probably look for value in the used MBP market.

Same here. I got mine (also a refurb) when both the Apple pricing was at its lowest ever, and the exchange rate was its most favourable in decades.

Best value computer I have ever owned, and it is still going strong (touch wood). :)

First off, I am past the half-century mark, so don't get attitude because you think I am some young punk giving you crap...

Now, these new Intel CPUs you are speaking of, you are wrong...

i9 9900K - 8 core / 16 thread
i7 9700K - 8 core / 8 thread
i5 9600K - 6 core / 6 thread

Regarding the vision issue(s), I feel for you, I am on bifocals now, which is no where near your issues, but still sucks...

But, slagging on Apple because you (with your degrading vision) have issues with their excellent 27" 5K IPS panels is just silly; now YOU sound like one of these 20-something whiners, almost as if you expect Apple to dump the 'smaller' monitor market altogether & make nothing but large-panel TVs to appease the smallest of demographics...

But hey, I am seriously contemplating going with a 70" 4K flat-panel TV myself, sitting back a bit in my recliner with a swinging side table for wireless keyboard/mouse duties...!

We will all know more soon...!

Why are there no links on Mac mini but there are on iPad? That's worrisome.

The lack of any leaks tells me one of two things... 1) No Mac mini today. I doubt this though since that has been the only leak, two sources are confident in an update today. 2) That today's update is simply going to be a spec bump and that no major design revisions are coming.

My money is going to be on it being a spec bump. A major one at that though since it's outdated by 4 years. Reality specs, Intel 8th gen 25-45watt processors and DDR4 non upgradable ram.

Hopeful specs, Intel 8th gen 45watt 6 core processors with the option of kaby lake G, socketed DDR4 ram, and easily upgradable storage. All in a space grey chassis. This could be considered a "pro Mac mini" in my book.

I thought recent suggestions were 2) Revision. Aka Refresh
