The dock is antiquated in my opinion. Almost everything these days can be done with only a keyboard.

I'm probably in the minority though.
Now that's Thinking Different™. I never thought of it like that before. I use Quicksilver for the same purpose.

Back when I used Linux, I found most things could be done from a shell window and typically far more efficiently, assuming you could remember and use all those commands and piping, etc. I ran Linux without a GUI and with a Lynx browser just for the "cool" factor of using the Internet without a freaking GUI (well it seemed cool at the time, but got old fast).

I don't like the frosted glass look...it's obviously an attempt to tie in with iOS 7's frosted glass effects.

But that's not my main problem with it. The middle-grey tones of the Mavericks dock makes quickly finding apps much harder. Not enough contrast for icons that are not very dark or very light in tone. Also too much visual noise -- the same reason I keep my menubars opaque instead of transparent.

So, taste and aesthetic aside, using the Mavericks side dock increases cognitive load, and thus makes me less productive while working.

Do birds whistling outside make you less productive as well? I guess so.

Your sarcastic remark adds nothing to the conversation. I switch between apps hundreds of times per day in my normal work. This stuff matters. I "sweat the details" in my own design work, and so should Apple.

Sorry, but I have to agree with the quoter. The color of the dock should not affect our productivity and his example of birds is spot-on. Try a slightly lighter backdrop picture and it meshes much better. I have one with medium pinks and purples (Alessandra Ambrosio photo) and the dock blends right in with those colors. It just wasn't that hard to adjust at all and people getting bent out of shape by a user element is kind of ridiculous. We have real problems in this world and it just seems awfully petty. Yes, let Apple know you don't like it, but some of these complaints just sound like the world depends on a dark dock.

Is there a way to get the side dock on the bottom? I love the way it looks on the sides and would definitely like to have it at the bottom...

Light Grey Dock

I used a left side dock in 10.6.8 and liked it black. I just upgraded to 10.9 yesterday, and other than spending some time getting peripherals working, the biggest thing I noticed was the light dock background. The contrast especially with the blue folder covers is not good IMO. I hope that solutions are forthcoming without radical hacks...
