No big loss. The NYT isn't that great.

Interesting assessment of you and the many who agree with you. After all, this newspaper has a high reputation worldwide and is mentioned frequently. I know just of few other American newspapers that also receive this honour.

I think it's just a leftover from the days when they were engaged in quality journalism.

The NY Times is nothing more than far-left propaganda these days, and I deleted the Apple News app ages ago. Why bother with it? I can do directly to the news sites I want to read, I don’t need a badly designed app from Apple for my news.

So to sum up:

Screw the NY Times

Screw Apple News

Good morning to all of you! ☕️

After November, all these rags will be defunct. Sued into oblivion for all their fake journalism, and half of the "journalists" will be seeing criminal indictments for knowlingly promoting treason and sedition.

Get your NYT's and WaPo's while you can. You've got about 6 months left.

umm, like in the good old black-on-white printed times?
Nope. In the print era they would have little information on the subscriber and companies didn’t resell the information as they do now. Also, they wouldn’t be able to get all the other info that can be gathered now.

in The “good old” days we’d just pick up the times at the booth on any street corner, so they knew nothing about us.

The first amendment is very inconvenient to people who want to “sue into oblivion” publications who print things they don’t like. But the *fact* that they want to sue is useful because it tells us the publications must have been telling the truth.

In a world, where there's no data to sell... you know, it's a part of healthy modern-day economics and doing everything in order to remove it is as lame as turning into communism. It works for a while but crashes hard and burns long once consequences arrive.
Healthy to use all the data the way it is currently bought and sold? We will have to disagree on that one.

That’s silly. Privacy = communism?

Good morning to all of you! ☕

It’s funny how reporting true facts triggers so many people. The paper of record since the 1800s, but it’s propaganda because it prints things that are vehemently denied and decried as fake news, which we find out, every time, six months later were absolutely true (when documents come out, witnesses go on the record, audio recordings leak, the person who said it was a lie actually admits it, etc.)

Well that got hostile within a page lol.

I used to be a huge news fan - watching the broadcast news at night before Star Trek reruns as a child - then begging neighbors for their old newspapers so I could read them. In jr high and high school I saved up enough to have my own newspaper / magazine subscriptions. Used to read prolifically.

That said, in the last 6+ years journalism has really taken a downward trend. Don't get me started on politics which were headline news for ... so long almost everyone I knew got sick of it (both sides of the fence).

While I agree that quality has gone down, I also agree that freedom of the press should be very important to a country that values freedom. It astounds me that so many people think news should be free, yet screams USA in the very next sentence.

I see very little value in the Facebook style news that always has a $ motive behind it (I don't have a Facebook account). Clickbait titles that offer almost no value other than bits of information that took very little effort to gather... some news organizations have resorted to this for clicks.

Without going into a huge rant, yes, the NYT may be leaning towards a side, but I still believe press is important and it will only get worse if we don't give it a foundation to stand up on. This is why I pay for my news.

The NYT has been very good in providing free access to any news article about COVID19 on their website. They are not a charity organization and they need to pay their employees and run a business which for any newspaper is not easy in this interent age where gossip and fake news is abundant. I recently discontinued my local Sunday newspaper because it had become so thin there was hardy anything to read in it plus advertising circulars and coupons were being discontinued by some stores I patronize. I would like to subscribe to the NYT, but $17 a month is something I cannot afford.

You should definitely invest everything you have in the organizations and people that you think will sue . . . and get back to us in 6 months.

You might try studying NYT v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1964). Here is a link.

Maybe Apple should hire their own journalists. There’s room in the market at the moment for a nonpartisan media outlet.

they have. they are involved in curating content for apple news feeds at the moment. no idea if they have more than that planned. But it's probably a good idea for them to avoid directly writing news, because even telling the absolute, provable, documented truth, complete with photographs and a paper trail, will simply piss off half the population (since facts are now apparently a matter of opinion).

Apple certainly does not have a history of "telling the absolute, provable, documented truth, complete with photographs and a paper trail" so they should not even contemplate writing news or even being indirectly involved with the news.

That’s because they are not a news organization. What’s your point?

Sadly true, but there are some sources which are clearly substandard to others.
Sure they are. People who have things to hide want you to think that there aren’t, is all.

You joined just now so you could post that? 🤦‍♂️

Well, you have to start somewhere 🤷‍♂️ Didn't realize there was a requirement that a member's first post had to meet certain requirements that later posts didn't.
