AN+ is just about newspapers? What about all the magazine subscriptions you'd have access to? Seems like the magazines only interest 10% or even less of the readers of AN+.

Problem I have is that of the magazines that interest me, I have to treat them like an oversized image. I found them unpleasant to read for any length of time.

meh, i love the news app. i really can't pick between flipboard and apple news. both have pros and cons.

This sucks - I'll be canceling my NYT subscription that I have specifically because of the integration with Apple News.

I'm not going to open the NYT app... I like to see a diverse set of articles from a variety of publishers as in Apple News and Google News.

Oh well, I still have my WashPo subscription - that will have to do.

BTW: I did follow through on this. Just canceled and told them my reason for doing so.

🤣 You subscribed to the New York Times but never opened the official app? You were paying and not getting the full experience; Apple News app did not have all the articles from the Times app.

I don't need the "full experience" - only want to read a few articles that catch my eye. I also like to support the services I use - even if I'm only using them lightly.

I have a hundred news outlets in Apple News - I prefer to have a diverse set of opinions instead of just one. Like I mentioned, I also subscribe to WashPo... and to Apple News+. A few dollars a month to support the journalism that shows up in my main news app is worth it - even if I'm not scouring every page of every article written by these sources.

I also pay for the NYT and WaPo. But the Apple News app is still useful for scanning multiple sources. You just have to know which are credible, or not.

I was in the same boat and just canceled NYT over this. Not angry at them - they are free to do what they want - but I have no reason to subscribe if their articles aren't going to show up where I read news.

To everyone talking about "Apple's Cut"... I subscribe directly to both NYT and WaPo - Apple does not get a cut... but my subscriptions still work in the Apple News app.

Apple gets their cut from my Apple News+ sub though ;-)

I liked the idea of Apple News in theory, but chose to directly subscribe to The NYT directly (along with The Washington Post) and continue my physical subscriptions to my handful of magazines. Maybe I am just too Old School.

I don't get this - it's not either or. I subscibe to NYT and WaPo directly - but you can still sign into those accounts in Apple News and see their articles there.

I am appalled at the distain for the NYT I see posted here. Clearly you've never looked past clicking on the headlines to see the in depth articles, comprehensive analysis on politics, history, the arts, science, technology, even cooking.

If your looking for a reason for this maybe it's apple charging 30 percent of the subscription price to provide none of the cost of supporting the research, correspondence, and enormous costs of one of the last real full service news organizations.

They do the same with audible subscriptions. They also charged 30 percent of the cost of a book to provide a link to buy it. Audible no profit juggernaut would have had to raise the price of the books to support listing it there so as a consequence you have to buy the books on the web and then go to the app to download them.

Nobody has been more committed to the apple "sphere" than I have since the early 80s but where things like parts, repairs, and especially the App Store they've always been a greedy bully

My first thought was, is this a Crazy Eddy project?

NYT seems like a pile of content surrounded on all sides by paywalls. ...like, a silo. When I am in the mood for a purely urban perspective on popular matters, I find The New Yorker does it better anyway.
Exactly! If I didn't know better, and had to guess, I'd definitely go with Eddy Cue 😬

An interesting move.

However, I know hundreds of people with iphones. Zero use apple
News. Neither do I. I 'curate' my own news feed to get balances reporting.
I know hundreds of people with iPhones and most of them use Apple News. It’s a great aggregator and very simple to use.

Desiring a more direct relationship with subscriber = we want more data to resell.
Resell? The first reason they want the data so that they can use it.

Isn't The New York Times one of the leaders in propagating Fake News?

Good riddance, and I can't imagine too many people will want to pay to read biased opinions & propaganda.

How about starting some real journalism, and chasing the truth, the stories that the Main Stream Media refuse to publish?
That is how you will stand out from the crowd and build your readership, but that seems to be a something from a bygone era
where the news was actually news.

I like it that they (publishers) DON'T have a direct relationship will me. Besides who knows what they do with our data, too many of them require that we agree to auto-renew our subscriptions, and we have to call to cancel. That phone conversation to cancel is not easy. Then they persistently send you numerous subscription offers after you cancel. Apple may take 30% from publishers, but I think for consumers it's a better experience. Easy to cancel any type of subscription bought through Apple.

Sorry duplicate post

No, they are not. They publish verifiable facts using the journalistic method, and admit when they make mistakes and correct them. They don’t just make stuff up like whatever you’re talking about.

So after I just checked a few sites that report on the validity of media companies, the NWT's rating is not too bad, mostly factual reporting, with a somewhat Left Wing bias.
But it seems that their Op-Ed section is much worse than the general news reporting.

I subscribe to New York Times, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times and am happy to support good journalism. Seems that everytime I tried to demo Apple News I hit a paywall so I never warmed up to it.

In a world, where there's no data to sell... you know, it's a part of healthy modern-day economics and doing everything in order to remove it is as lame as turning into communism. It works for a while but crashes hard and burns long once consequences arrive.

I think many of you are missing the point here. It's not about NYT being good, or bad. It's about News+ isn't a sustainable business in long term. NYT (as bad as it may for some of you) may be the first of many news company to leave the Apple News.

Next there may be more, and you'll be left with nothing but a few biased article by Apple. Availability of News+ is also terrible. I don't recall just how many countries it's available at? I forget about it, and that could be the end of it. Gone and forgotten.

What does this have to do with News+? NYT wasn’t part of news+.

I always found the quality of the NYT articles poor

Given some of the recent decisions by the NYT I won’t miss them
The turn the NYT has taken in recent years is simply shocking. The articles are completely biased and crazy, over the top liberal warriors seem to have taken over.

And nothing of value was lost. The propaganda sprouting, revisionist history spewing, reverse racist New York Times is the toilet paper of record (and a failing one, at that)

What is this Apple News? I see nothing in my iPad; nor in the App Store. As a matter of fact, the first three results that I obtain after looking up the term "news" in the App Store are Google News, The New York Times and Microsoft News. If I search for "Apple News" I see Microsoft News, Google News and Flipboard. I don't understand. Where is Apple News everyone is talking about?

I read physical newspaper/magazines to get away from devices; not spend more time on them.

It’s great value for the amount of content, but I feel Apple needs to trim down and just focus on what it can do best and what it can bring to the market that’s innovative.

Interesting assessment of you and the many who agree with you. After all, this newspaper has a high reputation worldwide and is mentioned frequently. I know just of few other American newspapers that also receive this honour.
