I beginning to hate my NYT digital subscription. I'm paying but every article is still full of ads. Not small, unobtrusive ads either. They are big ads that intrude completely into the body of the article. Getting close to cancelling by subscription and trying out the Wa Post.

I also pay for the NYT and WaPo. But the Apple News app is still useful for scanning multiple sources. You just have to know which are credible, or not.

Well, as a JD/PhD who teaches such things, I found the Apple News app a complete cluster****.

We can, of course, and appear to, disagree.

Perhaps read them in Safari with an ad and tracking blocker?

Not surprised...Apple News, just from the beginning seemed like it wouldn't work out. At least Apple tried, I will give them that.

The article says that NYT will not longer publish articles, not that Apple News is closing down. I doubt the 10 NYT articles a month is going to make a bit off diference one way or another.

I always found the quality of the NYT articles poor

Given some of the recent decisions by the NYT I won’t miss them

Could you please elaborate why? I moved to the US a few years ago and I’m still struggling to understand what the best news sources are. I thought The New York Times was one of them 😕

The NYT is one of the best news sources in the US. So is the Washington Post. Both emphasize factual reporting and are both very good at separating fact from opinion.

That some people do not like the reported facts, or what those facts mean, says more about the people in question than it does about either news entity.

I don’t know if it’s still going but I got a NYT promo deal about a month ago for a $1/week online subscription for 52 weeks.

I just signed up for that this morning. I guess my $1 put them over the top and they decided they don't need Apple to sell subscriptions any more.

Funny thing was I went into Apple News to try to see if my login could give me access to NYT articles within the app, but when I tried to click on some articles they showed as no longer available. I guess they were literally shutting it down as I was trying to get access.

Are you serious?

How nice for you, thanks for sharing!

It all depends on how you curate your sources. And they compliment my paid subscriptions to the NYT and WaPo. Being a news junkie, I take curation seriously.

Funny - I’ve never been complimented [sic] by NYT or WaPo. 🤣

As I said, we disagree. Which is fine.

I find these news fascinating. Because Apple News was never available in my country, its like 4 countries in the world. It failed before it was even avaliable here.

Well yeah, what's the benefit for the New York Times? Apple News only encourages readers to sign up for Apple News+. NYT is already a strong enough brand to generate its own subscriptions.

I was thinking the New York Times “customer relations” stuff referred to in this article might relate to the oodles of clickbait links and revenues that go beyond the subscription revenues.

They might be wanting to database you.

The NYT “brand” is still good, But the “journalism” is gone just like all the others! They have an institutional narrative and the journalism part has been absent for half a dozen years, maybe more?

This whole pay for news articles thing is stupid, in 2020, if anything people want less clutter not pay for me.

Apple needs to focus. They are all over the place.

Tell me about it, from news subscription apps, to build ARM Desktop OS, to Streaming Music, to financial services, to wireless earpods, to publishing TV shows and movies, to home appliances...the heavy giant will tumble

It is. The NYT is one of only a handful of newspapers left in the US that still employ a sizeable team of investigative reporters. Right now they are doing well financially, let's hope it stays that way. The fourth estate is more important than ever now as we are swimming in a sea of information sewage emanating from the big social media platforms.

If you want a good newspaper that is fully accessible in Apple News, try the Washington Post. You can sign in with your subscription credentials (I find their web front page much better though). They currently offer a one-year subscription for $29.

AN+ is just about newspapers? What about all the magazine subscriptions you'd have access to? Seems like the magazines only interest 10% or even less of the readers of AN+.

I try to get interested in them. Every once in awhile i think “i will go look for a long form article to read.”

Then i get distracted by a meme by daughter messages me and i never come back.

I liked the idea of Apple News in theory, but chose to directly subscribe to The NYT directly (along with The Washington Post) and continue my physical subscriptions to my handful of magazines. Maybe I am just too Old School.
me too, and capo
