-wireless sync and iTunes streaming
-use both microphones to record stereo
-send texts over wifi if cell service is unavailable
-iChat/three way video over wifi/2 way over 3G
-mobile hotspot (ATT issue)
-full bluetooth support
-720p or 1080p out

Hardware

-dual core cpu
-separate gpu
-better front and back camera
-dual speakers
-bluetooth 3.0 or 4.0
-inductive charging
-LED in back of home button or MacBook Pro like for notifications

This isnt hardware or software but stuff like live apps, live wallpapers would be cool to be added for users that want it but can be turned off for people who want better battery. No matter what Apple says if they want to keep up with android they need to give in and take this hit.

I think all the software except the hotspot and wireless sync can all be there for iOS 5. the hardware might take two years but would also be very nice to have.

Would be nice if they could find some genius to invent a new program that would allow users to individually delete calls from the call log/list:rolleyes: Or is this just forbidden period on all current and future Iphones  Current front facing camera sucks so an upgrade on the front facing camera would be nice for Facetime and Skype.

One thing I find annoying is when I want to remove an app for awhile for any number of reasons, when I reinstall it I have to re-log in, and with games I lose all of my saved data. I really wish I could save app states in iTunes or something individually, not just in back ups.

This is able to be done through Jailbreaking. App called RecentDelete

Can't tell you how disappointed I was when the iPhone 4 was announce with the same old screen size. Couldn't believe what I read. I was holding off getting an iPhone until the 4 was released, but with this news, I just went ahead and got a new 32 gig 3Gs (mere weeks before the 4 dropped).

I'm sorry, but that was an awful decision. Why would you want to lose out on all the new features and settle for the old model if the new model is the same price?!

I just have one wish and that's better app notifications because now it just doesn't work like it should.

I was too early to return it (missed it by 7 days actually), but once I found out they kept the 3.5" display (retina or not), had antenna problems, sensor problems and double the glass (and twice the breakage rate as it turns out), I wasn't that excited about it.

I'm hoping in 6 months they fix all that.

The current notification system was only designed for the: email, SMS, clock, calendar and phone app which ran one at a time and resided in the main home screen without fail so you could easily see them.

But now we have push notifications, exchange notifications, third-party app notifications like skype & IM clients, itunes/app store notifications etc. And more so these now multi-task and can be moved between screens. It's become chaotic...

It will be interesting to see how much of the wishlist we get this year. A better survey than how many people want an improved iPhone would have been what percentage or how many items of the list will you wait to see come to fruition before you buy a new phone.
The features I'm most jealous of in Android are speech to text, GPS, and 4" screens.
I know all of the wishlist isn't going to come true this year but it will be interesting to see how much does. Most of the items on the list are only a matter of time, especially if Android keeps stealing Apple's thunder.

I really love your very comprehensive list (and I wish you had one for the iPad)! Here's a few more suggestions (I hope they're not all duplicates - I wrote this quite awhile ago - take what you will):

Hardware

~ 64GB capacity (eventually maxing out at 128GB (or more), assuming the cloud takes over from there?)

~ 4G networking

~ more RAM (1GB +)

~ improved cooling system/ methods

~ faster processor (dual-core)

~ dual LED flash

~ 8MP+ back camera

~ 1.3MP+ front-facing camera

~ larger, longer-lasting battery

~ thinner design

~ multi-touch back

~ improved Retina Display (higher ppi, anti-glare, optimization for less power consumption, better viewing in direct sunlight, etc.)

~ improved antenna/ antenna design

~ mini solar panels on front/back of device for wireless charging on the go

~ faster charging/ sync (wirelessly and physically (over Light-Peak?)

~ front facing mini LED flash (for taking photos or push notifications, etc.)

~ two different iPhone sizes: a 3.5” (current) and 4” screen model (I personally feel that 4” is the sweet spot – anything larger is just ridiculous)

~ LiquidMetal iPhone! (near indestructible casing/ design – that would be epic)

*Apple branded PSP game control-type case that fits around the iPhone (physical hardware controls that developers could implement into their iOS games)*

*improved Bumper cases that fit around the back of the phone as well (+ more colors)

~ iPhone on Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile

Software

~ System Diagnostics Test (SDT = 1. Settings −> 2. Run system diagnostics −> 3. Display message “Calculated error(s) resolved” or “Unresolved system error(s) has (have) been sent to Apple” −> 4. Display message “System diagnosis complete”

~ Dropped Call Data (DCD = 1. Caller encounters dropped call −> 2. Display message “Dropped call data has been sent to your cellular network – thank you for your cooperation”)

~ HTC Leap/ Apple Expose-like feature to jump between different home-screens

~ custom SMS tones

~ voice-to-text input (as well as improved voice command recognition – think “Google Voice Search” app)

~ App Store application constantly checks for new app updates in the background

~ Bluetooth 3.0/4.0

~ live icons (basically, icons that show live updates of information −> similar to the Calendar app, whose icon changes when the date does −> include the Weather (current weather for your area) and Clock apps (hands on the clock slowly move throughout the day) − I think anything else would be too distracting (ex: gears turning on Settings app, having the clouds move on the Mail app or the Compass app constantly changing direction (which would also kill battery life fast, due to the constant use of the GPS chip)*

* I would keep this feature “Apple iOS-apps only” − it’s possible that 3rd-party developers could take this feature a little out of hand

~ improved multitasking: better look/ feel to multitasking method (more WebOS like, and more true to real multitasking) as well as a feature that allows data reliant apps (such as facebook) to refresh/ listen for updates in the background −> all apps, whether updated for iOS4 or not, should also be able to multitask regardless −> just freeze the app’s screen in its last state and unfreeze when the user comes back (this should be a standard feature – one that doesn’t require the developer to do any extra work (unless the developer has already updated the application for multitasking) – hopefully you know what I mean by this!)

~ in addition to live icons, there could be a secondary side to the Weather, Stock, Clock, Compass, iPod, Photos and Calendar apps by allowing the user to put a widget-specific version of the app on the home-screen

~ improved keyboard (Swype competitor? and maybe better predictive typing? (also include the voice-to-text option)

~ live wallpapers (available through the App Store? (no sound, and maybe a little user interaction would be nice…)

~ widgets/ widget system (available through the App Store?)

~ wireless syncing with iTunes (to computer or cloud-based iTunes)

~ iTunes streaming services (different from AirPlay)

~ cloud services (revamped MobileMe, etc.)

~ “End All” multitasking option in Settings app (much faster than closing all applications individually)

~ improved push notifications (major revamp, please)

~ iWork suite (iPhone-specific version)

~ 3G/4G mobile hotspot

~ FaceTime over 3G/4G (coming…)

~ FaceTime: up to 3-way video chat (split screen into four sections and yeah…)

~ app updates/ new apps install in background instead of “ripping you out” of the App Store app (I hate it when it does this…)

~ ability to star favorites in Mail (and other miscellaneous enhancements)

~ refined Folders (be able to store more than 12 apps in a single Folder −> when there’s more than 12 apps, have a scroll wheel to scroll down through the apps in the Folder instead of forcing the user to make another Folder)

~ free voice navigation service in Maps app (or make it part of the MobileMe suite (team up with TomTom maybe? Navigon? or create your own Apple Maps and stop relying on Google)

~ major UI overhaul (four years of staring at rows and rows of icons isn’t fun… we need something fresh)

~ update YouTube app, get rid of it (mobile online version is far better (no joke), or update it and turn it into a widget (also allow us to download YouTube content/ videos to our devices)

~ faster loading performance in Safari as well as a tabs feature (4 tabs per page)

~ smarter OS: instead of the message “Cannot send/ refresh mail” it should say “Will send message(s)/ refresh mail queue when Internet connection is reestablished”

~ fingerprint scanner (hardware and software) and face/ heartbeat recognition methods for unlocking/ accessing secured areas of the phone

~ more unlocking methods such as drawing a pattern/ connecting dots in a certain order to unlock the phone

~ better enterprise support (something that’s at least on par with, or beyond, RIM’s Blackberry offerings)

~ free standard MobileMe (with MobileMe Pro upgrade)

~ improved universal search (ex: be able to search the App Store, iTunes videos/ music, YouTube, etc. just by using universal search)

~ lock screen widgets/ notifications

~ revamped Notes app with push notifications (to-do list notifications, etc.)

~ delete weather locations in the Weather app by flicking the window(s) upward

~ wireless mouse support (iPad iOS version only)

App Store:

~ new sorting features: sort apps by “Highest Rating” and “Most Recommended” (Ping?)

iTunes 10:

~ option to have color on Apps, Library, Podcasts, etc. icons instead of just gray

I added anything on your list that I didn't already have in the OP, and that seemed like a good idea.

Some of these ideas like face recognition unlock are good ideas. We do have to be somewhat reasonable though. It gets increasingly difficult to make phones thinner with bigger batteries and more extra goodies than ever. I'd like to see us focus on today problems rather than a fantasy list. Until a 4G iPhone comes I don't think many people have battery life issues.
I also think lots of problems could be solved by case makers. It wasn't until I got my otterbox case for my iPhone 4 that I realized the value in making phones thinner and thinner. That said how much more valuable would the case be with a kickstand and an external battery. It took a lot to get me to choose a otterbox over a mophie. I'd like to see the top of the line case business grow and develop that same Swiss army knife attitude the phones they enclose have. I shouldn't have to pick what matters to me protecting the phone, keeping it charged, or anything else for that matter. Do all the above.
That said solar panels on the phone, unless they were in the screen somehow would be a waste. Now solar powered bags with powermat pockets, another feature that should get incorporated into cases, would be useful.

@ wikoogle as we get closer to iOS 5, it will be worth comparing the number of changes that have been made over the years. I'll look for the links but if somebody already knows where it is I'll let them beat me to it since the screen on my MacBook is broken.

@Wikoogle I too, would love to see a checklist/ comparison chart between the new features in iOS 5/ next iPhone and this thread. Cheers! :)

Yep, whenever iOS 5 and iPhone 5 gets released, I'll do such a checklist, and point out the features we're still waiting on.

This is honestly my biggest wish that I hope is added in the next iPhone...

"When plugged in, allow Windows/OSX to recognize and use the iPhone as a 32gb Mass/USB Storage Device. Please let us drag and drop videos and photos from any PC directly into the iPhone's video/photos folder without having to go through iTunes and syncing everything. It sucks that we can't just simply drag and drop a photo from a friend's computer into the Phone."

Doubt it, but you never know. By the way, you could probably start that checklist/ comparison chart after the iOS 5 preview event (which should take place in a couple months). I'm hoping for a new notification system! :)

The computer part of my iPhone 4 is terrific. The telephone part is horrendous. I want a working phone and then I will have the ideal iPhone. The rest is just stuff.
