I have over 1000 photos. I want there to be photo folders at least similar to the way they are handled for apps, but that can hold 100 photos each. Bonus points if you can make a post to Facebook folder. More bonus points if you can lock certain folders.

The term "Retina Display" is a completely meaningless largely undefined and vague marketing term.

A 4" inch iphone screen with a resolution of 960x640 would still have roughly double the PPI of the iPad and iPhone 3GS.

When introducing the retina display, Jobs referenced a specific PPI that qualifies the "retina" - 300 PPI @ 12(?) inches. The iPhone 4 has 326 PPI, so you can make the screen up to 3.8" without losing the losing the effect.

IMO they should have increased the screen size and resolution from the beginning.

I agree, they should have.

Even a 4" screen is EXTREMELY close to 300 PPI, and it still has a PPI higher than every other mass production handheld in the market, and higher than every andriod phone and the iPad by a very large margin. It's a nonissue really.

300 PPI is not some magic boundry nor is 12 inches. Do you really care that much whether it's the retina's resolution @13 inches vs @12 inches.

Apple definitely does and they touted it as a major selling point. It doesn't work so well if Jobs is like, "turns out there's this magic number of 300 PPI that the human eye can't make out more detail - so we created a screen with 285 PPI!"

Large screens are going to become the norm; it's going to be awkward for Apple at this point to increase the screen size because it's not going to be as sharp as the previous unit's screen. Of course, it will still probably be higher resolution than any other phone...

Can't tell you how disappointed I was when the iPhone 4 was announce with the same old screen size. Couldn't believe what I read. I was holding off getting an iPhone until the 4 was released, but with this news, I just went ahead and got a new 32 gig 3Gs (mere weeks before the 4 dropped).

I'm still flabbergasted they kept 3.5".

I'm of the thinking that they've painted themselves in a corner with the current design. They won't make it bigger and the most we'll see is a 3.8" screen - which, really, will seem like too little, too late when all the other phones out there are 4".

I'd like to see a FM receiver because I run on a treadmill at the gym and they transmit the audio for the TVs over FM. I'd also like to see a FM transmitter so when I'm in my car or someone else's car I can just use the radio to play iTunes.

its also possible that apple couldnt produce a 4" screen with retina display and keep it in line with price point and battery consumption expectations. The three big selling points IMHO is the display, battery life and price point for everything.

One thing I've noticed that makes me certain they will not change the size of the iPhone 4 to accommodate a larger screen: When they squared off the edges of the iP4, they had to make it narrower so that it would still fit in all the iPhone docks and adapters out there. This is a big thing. I don't think they made it narrower just for the hell of it. They had to, to keep it fitting in all the aftermarket products out there. (the cad drawings bare this out)

They will not widen it, even a fraction of an inch because it will break all those iPhone products.

They'll squeeze in a 3.8" screen or nothing. (also, Steve Jobs would have to eat crow when he said no one was interested in a larger screen).

He also said that no one would want video on the iPod just a few days before iPod Video.

I would love to be able to customize my lockscreen with different notifications, Id prefer to be able to check if Ive got email with one glance at the lockscreen. Also Id love to be able to use custom sounds.

Like when I had mine Jailbroken, I had the AOL 'You've got Mail!' for email, I miss that :D

I really love your very comprehensive list (and I wish you had one for the iPad)! Here's a few more suggestions (I hope they're not all duplicates - I wrote this quite awhile ago - take what you will):

Hardware

~ 64GB capacity (eventually maxing out at 128GB (or more), assuming the cloud takes over from there?)

~ 4G networking

~ more RAM (1GB +)

~ improved cooling system/ methods

~ faster processor (dual-core)

~ dual LED flash

~ 8MP+ back camera

~ 1.3MP+ front-facing camera

~ larger, longer-lasting battery

~ thinner design

~ multi-touch back

~ improved Retina Display (higher ppi, anti-glare, optimization for less power consumption, better viewing in direct sunlight, etc.)

~ improved antenna/ antenna design

~ mini solar panels on front/back of device for wireless charging on the go

~ faster charging/ sync (wirelessly and physically (over Light-Peak?)

~ front facing mini LED flash (for taking photos or push notifications, etc.)

~ two different iPhone sizes: a 3.5” (current) and 4” screen model (I personally feel that 4” is the sweet spot – anything larger is just ridiculous)

~ LiquidMetal iPhone! (near indestructible casing/ design – that would be epic)

*Apple branded PSP game control-type case that fits around the iPhone (physical hardware controls that developers could implement into their iOS games)*

*improved Bumper cases that fit around the back of the phone as well (+ more colors)

~ iPhone on Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile

Software

~ System Diagnostics Test (SDT = 1. Settings −> 2. Run system diagnostics −> 3. Display message “Calculated error(s) resolved” or “Unresolved system error(s) has (have) been sent to Apple” −> 4. Display message “System diagnosis complete”

~ Dropped Call Data (DCD = 1. Caller encounters dropped call −> 2. Display message “Dropped call data has been sent to your cellular network – thank you for your cooperation”)

~ HTC Leap/ Apple Expose-like feature to jump between different home-screens

~ custom SMS tones

~ voice-to-text input (as well as improved voice command recognition – think “Google Voice Search” app)

~ App Store application constantly checks for new app updates in the background

~ Bluetooth 3.0/4.0

~ live icons (basically, icons that show live updates of information −> similar to the Calendar app, whose icon changes when the date does −> include the Weather (current weather for your area) and Clock apps (hands on the clock slowly move throughout the day) − I think anything else would be too distracting (ex: gears turning on Settings app, having the clouds move on the Mail app or the Compass app constantly changing direction (which would also kill battery life fast, due to the constant use of the GPS chip)*

* I would keep this feature “Apple iOS-apps only” − it’s possible that 3rd-party developers could take this feature a little out of hand

~ improved multitasking: better look/ feel to multitasking method (more WebOS like, and more true to real multitasking) as well as a feature that allows data reliant apps (such as facebook) to refresh/ listen for updates in the background −> all apps, whether updated for iOS4 or not, should also be able to multitask regardless −> just freeze the app’s screen in its last state and unfreeze when the user comes back (this should be a standard feature – one that doesn’t require the developer to do any extra work (unless the developer has already updated the application for multitasking) – hopefully you know what I mean by this!)

~ in addition to live icons, there could be a secondary side to the Weather, Stock, Clock, Compass, iPod, Photos and Calendar apps by allowing the user to put a widget-specific version of the app on the home-screen

~ improved keyboard (Swype competitor? and maybe better predictive typing? (also include the voice-to-text option)

~ live wallpapers (available through the App Store? (no sound, and maybe a little user interaction would be nice…)

~ widgets/ widget system (available through the App Store?)

~ wireless syncing with iTunes (to computer or cloud-based iTunes)

~ iTunes streaming services (different from AirPlay)

~ cloud services (revamped MobileMe, etc.)

~ “End All” multitasking option in Settings app (much faster than closing all applications individually)

~ improved push notifications (major revamp, please)

~ iWork suite (iPhone-specific version)

~ 3G/4G mobile hotspot

~ FaceTime over 3G/4G (coming…)

~ FaceTime: up to 3-way video chat (split screen into four sections and yeah…)

~ app updates/ new apps install in background instead of “ripping you out” of the App Store app (I hate it when it does this…)

~ ability to star favorites in Mail (and other miscellaneous enhancements)

~ refined Folders (be able to store more than 12 apps in a single Folder −> when there’s more than 12 apps, have a scroll wheel to scroll down through the apps in the Folder instead of forcing the user to make another Folder)

~ free voice navigation service in Maps app (or make it part of the MobileMe suite (team up with TomTom maybe? Navigon? or create your own Apple Maps and stop relying on Google)

~ major UI overhaul (four years of staring at rows and rows of icons isn’t fun… we need something fresh)

~ update YouTube app, get rid of it (mobile online version is far better (no joke), or update it and turn it into a widget (also allow us to download YouTube content/ videos to our devices)

~ faster loading performance in Safari as well as a tabs feature (4 tabs per page)

~ smarter OS: instead of the message “Cannot send/ refresh mail” it should say “Will send message(s)/ refresh mail queue when Internet connection is reestablished”

~ fingerprint scanner (hardware and software) and face/ heartbeat recognition methods for unlocking/ accessing secured areas of the phone

~ more unlocking methods such as drawing a pattern/ connecting dots in a certain order to unlock the phone

~ better enterprise support (something that’s at least on par with, or beyond, RIM’s Blackberry offerings)

~ free standard MobileMe (with MobileMe Pro upgrade)

~ improved universal search (ex: be able to search the App Store, iTunes videos/ music, YouTube, etc. just by using universal search)

~ lock screen widgets/ notifications

~ revamped Notes app with push notifications (to-do list notifications, etc.)

~ delete weather locations in the Weather app by flicking the window(s) upward

~ wireless mouse support (iPad iOS version only)

App Store:

~ new sorting features: sort apps by “Highest Rating” and “Most Recommended” (Ping?)

iTunes 10:

~ option to have color on Apps, Library, Podcasts, etc. icons instead of just gray

I want to be able to answer calls without having to use the touch screen. Something like holding down the home button would do. Its annoying to take off gloves to answer a call

Touchscreen that doesn't require heat/ electromagnetic pulses to operate? Problem solved? I think PatentlyApple said Apple was working on some new tech regarding this issue...

Some of your ideas are just plainly silly. You want want a thinner design, but you also want a larger, longer-lasting battery. You also want these, all of which go against one or the other of the previous two "wants":
-dual LED flash
-8MP+ back camera
-1.3MP+ front-facing camera
-multi-touch back
-mini solar panels on front/back of device for wireless charging on the go
-fingerprint scanner (hardware and software)
-App Store application constantly checks for new app updates in the background
-live icons
-live wallpapers
-widgets/ widget system

I'm sorry - some of these ideas may be your "wishes," but they simply make no sense or have no place in Apple's design mentality. The only things that I can agree with, I've notated.

Touchscreen that doesn't require heat/ electromagnetic pulses to operate? Problem solved? I think PatentlyApple said Apple was working on some new tech regarding this issue...

I'm not interested in changing the screen tech, I just want there to be a way to answer calls using the hard ware buttons.

improved cooling system/ methods
My iPhone 4 is perfectly cool...
dual LED flash
i see no need?
thinner design
i think the iPhone 4 is thin enough, any thinner and it would be less comfortable in the hand
multi-touch back
i dont get this? why? the screen is on the front?
improved Retina Display (higher ppi, anti-glare, optimization for less power consumption, better viewing in direct sunlight, etc.)
higher ppi? its already higher than the human eye can distinguish from the normal viewing distance
mini solar panels on front/back of device for wireless charging on the go
waste of space in the device, and would look ugly
front facing mini LED flash (for taking photos or push notifications, etc.)
i agree on the LED for notifications, but doesnt need to be a flash too, see here for my idea
two different iPhone sizes: a 3.5” (current) and 4” screen model (I personally feel that 4” is the sweet spot – anything larger is just ridiculous)
i think 4 inches is also too big, maybe it could be pushed to 3.7, but i have an ipad if i want a bigger screen.
System Diagnostics Test
not sure of it's usefulness, if you have a problem you call apple, you don't send of a diagnostics report and hope they get back to you
HTC Leap/ Apple Expose-like feature to jump between different home-screens
what is wrong with swiping?
in addition to live icons, there could be a secondary side to the Weather, Stock, Clock, Compass, iPod, Photos and Calendar apps by allowing the user to put a widget-specific version of the app on the home-screen
i like the lock screen to be clean, if i want icons all i have to do is swipe
live wallpapers (available through the App Store? (no sound, and maybe a little user interaction would be nice…)
i think it would make things too cluttered
widgets/ widget system (available through the App Store?)
you already said that
major UI overhaul (four years of staring at rows and rows of icons isn’t fun… we need something fresh)
no we don't, perhaps menus and such could be polished, but the general feel of the UI is well known and shouldn't be changed
faster loading performance in Safari as well as a tabs feature (4 tabs per page)
why do you need a tabs feature and a new page feature? the page system works perfectly on the smaller screen of the iphone, yes you can have tabs on the ipad, because its a much bigger screen.
fingerprint scanner (hardware and software) and face/ heartbeat recognition methods for unlocking/ accessing secured areas of the phone
waste of space, just use a passkey
more unlocking methods such as drawing a pattern/ connecting dots in a certain order to unlock the phone
just making things more complicated, what do you have against the swipe to unlock?
lock screen widgets/ notifications
how many times are you going to say this?
revamped Notes app with push notifications (to-do list notifications, etc.)
isn't that what the calendar is for?

While i agree with a lot of the things you said, some things stood out to me as bad ideas.. sorry for the long post but hey, this is a forum.

Huh? I didn't say I wanted all of these features in 2-3 years. Over time, yes, right now, no. Why wouldn't higher MP cameras and a multitouch back, etc. not be in Apple's mentality?

I'm not interested in changing the screen tech, I just want there to be a way to answer calls using the hard ware buttons.
Oh, I see now. Hmm. That's a good point - maybe voice control?

My iPhone 4 is perfectly cool...
I meant for hot summer days. I'm never very specific (which is a bad thing).
i see no need?
Dunno either... I'm not a photographer, so I wouldn't know the exact benefits.
i think the iPhone 4 is thin enough, any thinner and it would be less comfortable in the hand
To one's own preference. I wouldn't mind another 1-2 mm shaved off.
i dont get this? why? the screen is on the front?
The back wouldn't be a screen...
higher ppi? its already higher than the human eye can distinguish from the normal viewing distance
I can still see pixels (if I try). :D
waste of space in the device, and would look ugly
Personally, I don't think it's a waste of space. Your iPhone would almost always be charged, and I'm pretty confident Apple can turn 'ugly' into 'pretty'.
i agree on the LED for notifications, but doesnt need to be a flash too, see here for my idea
Please, please tell me you emailed this to Steve/ sent it to Apple. It's pure genius and totally something Apple would do! :)
i think 4 inches is also too big, maybe it could be pushed to 3.7, but i have an ipad if i want a bigger screen.
True.
not sure of it's usefulness, if you have a problem you call apple, you don't send of a diagnostics report and hope they get back to you
It's basically the feature found in Mac OS X - if an application crashes, a window pops up asking to report it. I'm describing a feature of a similar sort.
what is wrong with swiping?
11 screens to swipe? No thanks.
i like the lock screen to be clean, if i want icons all i have to do is swipe
Lots of other people would rather have it filled with useful info. We'll have to wait and see what Apple delivers.
i think it would make things too cluttered
Again, to one's own preference. I wouldn't mind having the option.
you already said that
I did? Oops.
no we don't, perhaps menus and such could be polished, but the general feel of the UI is well known and shouldn't be changed
Agreed. Additional menu polish, etc., etc. is fine with me. :)
why do you need a tabs feature and a new page feature? the page system works perfectly on the smaller screen of the iphone, yes you can have tabs on the ipad, because its a much bigger screen.
Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking there. Like I said, I wrote this quite awhile ago. My mind obviously wasn't with me when I did so... :D
waste of space, just use a passkey
I can dream, can't I?
just making things more complicated, what do you have against the swipe to unlock?
Not sure. Another not-so-well-thought-out-feature of mine. You should have said "That's what JBing is for!".
how many times are you going to say this?
Sorry. Repetition for effect?
isn't that what the calendar is for?
I'd like cross-integration then.

While i agree with a lot of the things you said, some things stood out to me as bad ideas.. sorry for the long post but hey, this is a forum.
Don't worry about it. Thanks for the criticism (and sorry for all the bold - I'm sure it's annoying to look at)! :)

Yeah because its annoying to take off gloves just to answer a phone call.
it is odd that they provided the ability to silence the ringer and send the call to voicemail using the buttons, but not actually answer the call.
Don't worry about it. Thanks for the criticism (and sorry for all the bold - I'm sure it's annoying to look at)! :)

you're right a lot of them i guess are personal preference, if apple do include a widget type thing i hope you can disable it.

about the LED notification home square, someone said that in the other thread where i first posted it, but i never got round to it, after the whole thing about the ipad rotation lock switch, where apple didn't listen to it's customers, i didn't see the point, but i guess it cant hurt, i may send it off to them some time.

You should (like right now). The sooner the better! ;)

I would love to get rid of unneeded files on my iPhone, like languages and stuff that I'll never use. I mean, you can get them back with a restore, but I shouldn't have to carry them around with me all the time.
