Yeah, that would be nice. It sucks that all of my current iPhone accesories would become obselete though, but I think it's worth it in the long run.

Regardless, I think you're about to get your wish. EU recently passed a law saying that all their phones have to have a micro usb port/charger.

too bad i dont live in Europe, i'm from America. hopefully we'll follow suit.

IR for remote functionality? Doesn't the iPhone do the same thing, over wifi? I had an IR sensor in my old w810i, and NEVER used it. Its almost pointles, IMO, to have in a phone today.

Bluetooth 4.0? Apple will probably be slow to adopt 3.0, and it isn't manstream enough yet. And when will 4.0 be out anyway?

Although an LED notifier would be nice, I don't see them adding that either. A lot of your software requests, however, are pretty good add ons. But on the hardware side? Pipe dreams.

I kind of see your point about IR but...

Bluetooth 4.0?

Maybe you should learn about Bluetooth 4.0 before dismissing it...

"On 6 July, 2010, the Bluetooth SIG announced the formal adoption of Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0 with the hallmark feature, Bluetooth low energy technology. This final step in the adoption process opened the Bluetooth SIG Qualification Program for qualification of all Bluetooth product types to Version 4.0. Read the full press release.

Thanks to its innovative design, Bluetooth low energy wireless technology consumes only a fraction of the power of Classic Bluetooth radios. This design enables the technology to be used in devices powered by small, coin-cell batteries and, in some cases, makes it possible to operate these devices for more than a year without recharging.

Bluetooth low energy wireless technology, the hallmark feature of the Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0, features:

Ultra-low peak, average and idle mode power consumption
Ability to run for years on standard coin-cell batteries
Low cost
Multi-vendor interoperability
Enhanced range

I know a little about it, but admittedly, not that much. However, Bluetooth 3.0 isn't even widely adopted, so again, BT 4.0 is a few years out at best. Apple is typically a little late to the party in terms of bleeding edge tech. They haven't put 3.0 in iPhones yet.

Apple is typically a little late to the party in terms of bleeding edge tech.

Not when it comes to the iPhone.

The retina display is way ahead of it's time. The 512mbs of ram was bleeding edge tech. Even the cpu is impressive.

Not to mention the accelerameter, the gyroscope, the light sensor in the first iphone etc etc.

When it comes to the iPhone line, Apple has typically gone with bleeding edge tech whenever it makes sense.

If bluetooth 4.0 can make the iPhone's battery last longer, I think apple would strongly consider it.

iPhone better cook my eggs over EASY next year or the Pimp Hand is going to be painting black eyes all day long.

1. More manual control over the camera

The camera is easily the best of any mobile phone right now but the exposure isn't always correct and this could easily be fixed by exposure compensation which any other half decent cameraphone can do. White balance, saturation and sharpness adjustment would be nice too. Saturation is turned up too high and I get blown out colours on some shots and the sharpness is too high. Looks fine on the phone because Apple doesn't let you view at 100% but put it into another program and you see the problem.

2. Task manager

Steve Jobs says that manually having to kill apps is a failure on the manufacturer's part, I really don't think so. Either way, I (and others) have to kill apps to free up ram so I guess they did fail. Putting a task manager to show memory remaining and offer an easy way to kill apps doesn't have to give users too much control but swiping and manually killing each app is annoying.

3. Better EQ

The quality of the EQ is garbage and the ability to make custom presets on the device itself would be nice.

4. FM radio

Other phones have it. Why not the iphone?

5. Better notification system

Android's is fantastic

6. More email functionality

Simple things like mark read/unread are still missing...

7. A more rugged phone

A phone isn't designed to be chucked around but accidents do happen. What is the point of a beautiful design when you have to buy a case to protect or from the inevitable or even worse, it's own issues. HTC and Nokia can make nice looking phones that don't have this problem.

Thanks for your ideas grahamp. I added everything on your list that wasn't already covered, to my OP. Hope you like the update.

Tell me if there is anything at all that you guys want to see added to this list.

I definitely concur on the 4 inch screen. After coming from the Samsung Captivate, the iPhone 4 leaves a lot to be desired in screen size.

The only other things on the list that really would make my day would be a fix to the proximity sensor, (yes, better in 4.1, but still not like my 3GS was) the overhaul on the notification system (needed desperately), and the ability to customize the UI a lot more, including a completely redesigned lockscreen that gives us the ability to add widgets.

I'm sure there's more that other people would want more, but these fixes would make the perfect phone for me.

Cheers wikoogle, I wasn't really aware you were compilling a list, great idea though.

Email Flags

iOS 5 (or 4.x) to include the ability to flag a message for follow up (same type of function to Outlook).

It's my biggest gripe as a business user.

I agree, a lot of the OP wishlist would be "nice" but I find very few of them I would use, and almost none of them I would need.

The stuff I agree with:

*Updated lock screen (customizable) - this would be nice, but especially in terms of emails.
*Updated email functionality - although nothing like what the OP listed. I need very different options as I receive anywhere from 200-1000 business related emails a day.
*Better voice commands - would be nice to have while in the car.
*Better Battery - For me, the iPhone 4 battery suits me well, but you can always do better in this department.
*64 GB - And more access to the storage.
*Wireless syncing - I dream of this day.

Stuff I would like to have, but would not be willing to pay even .01 for:

*Upgraded GPU
*RFID
*FM radio (I actually would never even use this, but it would be nice to say my phone was capable of doing it)
*Dual speakers
*BT 4.0
*IR remote

Stuff I disagree with:

* Bigger screen - I carry my phone in my suit pocket or tailored jean pants. I do not want anything larger or thicker than the current iphone. It might be nice to offer this as a option, but I doubt it. I think it will either be move the entire line up to larger screens, or keep them as they are.

*Updated email functionality - although nothing like what the OP listed. I need very different options as I receive anywhere from 200-1000 business related emails a day.

Educate me. What kind of email features would you like to see added? If they make sense, I'll add them to the OP.

Also, what do you mean by flagging emails for follow up?

I'm all for the lockscreen info thing. I'd love for there to be a section in the App store where you can download different styles and themes for your lockscreen (maybe customizing the look of stuff like badges and SMS previews in the theme also).

I want a kitchen sink.

Their's an App for that.

Not sure if the OP is updated with peoples suggestion, but this is a feature I'd like for the new iPhone.

Facetime on 3g/4g. Not just WiFi. I know its possible to do Facetime on 3g if the phone is Jailbroken, but I don't want to jailbreak.

Facetime, not just with other iPhones/iPods, but with any other phone, on any other carrier.

And im not sure if this counts: but the iPhone, on multiple carriers, not just At&t.

Widgets, and more customizations of Apps.

iChat

Besides the things mentioned here, i'd like the audio output level to be much higher. The ringtones, sms tones and the speakerphone I find (as does everyone I speak to with the iPhone) it way too quiet.

In a cold climate when wearing multi layers of clothing where the iPhone is tucked away in an inside chest pocket, it's almost inaudible especially in a work environment even when the ring volume is set to the loudest position. The vibrating unit in the phone is next to useless, I rarely feel it if it's not duct taped to my skin!!!

The ability to use a custom SMS tone and of course an antennae that doesn't drop a signal no matter how it's held like the current POS design of the iPhone 4 (which I had to take back).

All the recent wishes have been added to the list. Let me know if there's anything else you would like to see. :)

Facetime, not just with other iPhones/iPods, but with any other phone, on any other carrier.
How, exactly, do you propose this to be possible?

And im not sure if this counts: but the iPhone, on multiple carriers, not just At&t.
... /sigh

Widgets, and more customizations of Apps.
Customization of apps has nothing to do with Apple and everything to do with the app creators.
Why do you need Widgets? What do you want them to do that isn't already done? How would they be implemented over the already busy Home screens?
This isn't practical.

Here is my opinion on this list:

The iPhone 4 revision was worked on a full 20 months before the iPhone 4's launch. So, while I'm not expecting a major hardware overhaul in 2011 (the iPhone 5), I expect a number of software improvements, and I fully expect that Apple has just started work on the hardware inside the 2012 iPhone (iPhone 6), which will undoubtedly be another major revision.

I really think the below list is worth having Apple's engineers take a look at. It's a comprehensive list of all the reasonable software wishes that people have for the iPhone 5 & 6. It's easily the most comprehensive such list on this forum. Is there something reasonable you would like to see that's not listed? Simply post it and I'll add it to the list.

An improved notifications system similar to Andriod's or Palm's. I totally agree

OTA/Wireless iTunes and Syncing Ok

OTA/Wireless 720p output
to HDTVs/Apple TV that would be nice

Wireless Hotspots without Jailbreaking that would be nice

iSense to downclock the phone during menial tasks and preserve battery life this one i dont understand

Allow Us to Rename, Add and Delete music, videos, and individual text messages and individual phone calls from our iphones directly Please! and then update your itunes library ;)

A file system for organizing videos, music, photos (into albums), and documents (PDF, DOC, PAGES), and other files for email attachments directly on the phone itself without having to sync it. It's beyond idiotic that I can't organize the 100+ photos and videos in my iPhone into separate folders/albums. This would also allow us to attach any filetype to emails we are sending out that would be nice

A Updated Lock Screen That Displays Number of Missed Calls, Texts, Voicemails, Emails & Custom Widgets of our choice I like this, but it woudl have to be done the right way

Possibly Dynamic Weather, Temp and Clock Icons (or Widgets) again, i like this but it would have to be done the right way

More Email Functionality - Simple things like flagging emails for follow up or by category are still missing, auto-categorizing emails based on where they are sent from, and other business class email functionality would be nice. The option to let us download all of the text in our emails off the email client onto the phone permanently would also be a welcome change. Currently, searching through your emails in the iPhone is broken and really does not work. If you're looking for a specific email you sent out or received more than a week ago, you have no choice but to use your computer to find it. mmm.. i really dont know about this

The option to schedule your emails so that they can be sent/delivered at a specific time in the future would be very useful and very welcome. I would love to be able to write up an email at 1 am and schedule it to be sent out at 9AM the next morning. Likewise, I would love to schedule an email to myself to be sent a week from now reminding myself that I need to contact someone at that specific date. Ok, too specific, dont see aa use for it (but i guess only for your and a small group of users)

An official Apple Controller Shell that adds dual analog sticks, a dpad, buttons and triggers to the iPhone to got along with the beefed up CPU, GPU, and games like Epic Citadel in 3D. iPhone gaming desperately needs better controls. Games like NOVA, Modern Warfare and Nazi Zombies are fantastic, but made near unplayable due to how slippery glass is to try to use as a control interface, and how hard it is to control a joystick with a touch screen. A simple optional controller shell would singlehandedly help the iPhone completely dominate the portable gaming market. Update: Nevermind this request, turns out that two such devices are already close to mass production. iControlPad & Gamebone. Apple should however make sure these devices get fully supported by their games.

Ability to use it like a Magic Trackpad or 10/GUI device with other apple devices not for me

Improved/More Voice Commands - Turn off Bluetooth, Turn off Wifi, Create Notes and Type Emails with our voice (voice to text input) that would be nice

Improved EQ - The quality of the EQ needs work and the ability to make custom presets on the device itself would be nice. i dont even know what you are refering to here

Allow us to connect our iPhone to a PC/TV to function as an external hard drive to store and move content that would be nice

Letting us rename apps, remove app names entirely, and more customizations to how the UI, home screen, lock screen, dock, slider, icons, dynamic wallpapers etc all look that would be nice

Multiple Profiles ok, is a PERSONAL CELLPHONE lol dont really see the need for that

Multiple Carriers Of course! we all been waiting for this one ;)

A Button to kill all multitasking apps at once to instantly free up RAM
YES!

Let us delete/hide the built in stocks and youtube (and other) apps, so that we can replace youtube app with m.youtube.com web app (looks and works a lot better). yeah, that would be nice, instead of hiding it we could just delete it lol ohhh but then they have to add it to the app store because I know people will change their minds

Integrate built in business card scanner, bar code scanner (maybe even a fingerprint scanner) into the iPhone. So instead of manually entering in contact info, you simply take a photograph of the business card (or bar code) and press add to contact list and it will fill in the info for you more for like the business customers but yeah that would be nice

Refined side scrolling folders that hold 16 apps, having 9 apps looks ugly when you open a folder only to have it be assymetric I disagree with this one

Smarter OS (ex: if you type an email and can't send it because you're not connected to the internet, instead of the message "Cannot send mail," etc. it should say "Will send message in background once internet connection is reestablished,' better file management and connectivity with the cloud, better autocorrect, faster code execution via the new xCode 4 and other similar functions that would be nice

Support in the native iPhone video player for all the codecs that VLC supports ok i'm confused with this one lol i dont even know what you are talking about hehehe lol :p

Enable natively the other legitimate functionality that people currently jailbreak their iPhone's for... mm...

Below covers ALL of the reasonable hardware wishes people have...

4 inch screen - This is the sweet spot for smartphone screens. As more and more people gain experience with various smartphones (Droid X, Evo 4G), they are falling in love with bigger screens. 4 inches is big enough to make browsing, typing and video playback pleasant, while not too big that the phone would be noticably larger than the current iPhone (the current iPhone has a large bezel that could be done away with to accommodate a 4 inch screen for the most part). The EVO 4g has a much smaller bezel on the top and bottom than the iPhone and is perfectly comfortable to hold regardless. Given how much more pleasent video playback and browsing is on a 4" screen, and how all the popular smartphones have 4" or 4.3" screens, and the oversized bezel in the current iPhone that can be reduced in size to accommodate a bigger screen, I see 4" as a natural step forward. By shrinking the size of the current bezel, the 4 inch iphone wouldn't have to be any taller, and would only need to about 2mms wider. Please atleast offer a 4 inch screen as an option. I can't help but envy the evo 4g's and driod x's big ass screen everytime I use it. PLEASE DONT, want a phone not a brick

Cortex-A15 MPCore processor - A new cpu is overdue. And while this isn't likely to show up until the iPhone 6, the a15 will be well worth the wait. It's five times more powerful than the current cpu, while using the same amount of power. I dont know about this, but i know a newer cpu is usually better :) so yeah, that would be nice

Gorilla Glass (This video demonstrates why better than words can. http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/29/dell-streaks-gorilla-glass-screen-torture-tested-for-your-amus/), that would be nice IF IT KEEPS THE RETINA DISPLAY

Liquidmetal (New tech recently purchased by Apple would allow for lighter, thinner, stronger, cheaper material), that would be nice

Tegra 3/4 GPU (with the new SGX545 or Tegra 2 GPU serving as an intermediary GPU until then) when paired with the Cortex A-15 cpu would rival the power of current gen gaming consoles and completely trounce the Nintendo 3DS. Combined with either an official Apple Controller Shell with dual analog sticks or the iControlPad/Gamebone, the iPhone would become the one and only handheld gaming device you would ever need. Imagine being able to play Bungie's next FPS on the iPhone with dual analog sticks, and being able to output it wirelessly to your hdtv at 640p resolution (the exact same resolution that Halo 3 runs at), whenever you're home. loooost

Dual speakers with the ability to emulate 3D surround sound as well as a higher volume level and vibrate level overall (the current max volume and max vibrate are way too low) that would be nice

4G Antenna that would be nice

Proximity sensor and antenna fix please

Xenon flash to improve low light performance of the camera (I was in Miami this weekend and couldn't get a single visible photo after 7pm to save my life), that would be nice

Bluetooth 4.0 with file sharing and/or Lightpeak, that would be nice

HD/FM Radio Tuner, that would be nice

3D Screen akin to the Nintendo 3DS (you won't need to wear glasses to see it in 3D). Would enable 3D gaming and 3D movie viewing. havent used a nintendo 3ds but sounds cool

Smaller Bezel (to help accommodate a bigger screen), as i said before, i think the screen of the iphone is just fine, anything bigger will make it akward IMHO

Bigger Camera Lens to allow better low light performance, that would be nice

Even Better Cameras, that would be nice

Bigger Battery, as in lasting longer? YES as in physically bigger? No

Multiple Phone Colors, that would be nice but they have to be the right colors ;)

LED Notification Light under the home button similar to blackberry light notifications, I know this is a debatable one, but I personally would like it :)

Touch sensitive back for gestures and gaming functions, mmm... i dont know about this one ...

IR remote functionality, that would be nice

RFID to let employers use the phone as an id badge, to let us use it as a credit card, pay toll machines etc. that would be nice

64gb, does this even need an explanation that would be nice

I really think this list covers everything anybody could ask for.

I like your list, some of these things I totally see them coming, others are just too good to be true IMHO lol and some of them I didnt like them at all...

overall, I will be printing this list and will scratch them off as the features appears, however I will scratch some off as I dont think they will or I think should never make it to the iPhone :)

thanks again!

Thanks. I'm glad you like the list. Let me know if there is anything you would like me to add to it.

I get not wanting the phone to be much bigger. But if Apple cuts down on the amount of room the bezel takes, the screen could be made 4 inches without making the phone more than a couple of mms bigger, which most people wouldn't even notice.

The advantages of a 4 inch screen are numerous. Websites, ebooks, videos, games would all look and be easier on the eyes with a 4 inch screen. I suggest playing around with phones like the Evo 4G or Driod X to see just how much more pleasant a bigger screen can make browsing, book reading, gaming and video playback.
