How, exactly, do you propose this to be possible?

I'm not sure how it'll be possible, but it will be a great feature. I mean, we can make phone calls to any number on any carrier, so why not be able to have facetime with any line on any carrier also? That would be amazing.

Customization of apps has nothing to do with Apple and everything to do with the app creators.
Why do you need Widgets? What do you want them to do that isn't already done? How would they be implemented over the already busy Home screens?
This isn't practical.

Do I look like a ****in software developer or an Apple employee? no. I don't know how it would be done, but it would be a nice feature. The droids got widgets, and they're able to make their widgets be any size with any photo. The iMacs and MacBooks have widgets, so the iPhone/iPod/iPad should also. It would be a great feature, and would really compete with the android market after having these upgrades.

Firstly, there is no reason to be hostile. You'll get much more reasonable responses if you aren't so rude.

The Droid and OSX have widgets, but they also have a distinguishing difference from iOS - iOS has a homescreen chock full of applications. Widgets have essentially no place in iOS because each individual application is basically a widget in itself. For example, you want a weather widget? You have Weather and TWC. I'm sorry, but I just don't see the need for widgets in iOS.

I could see widgets being useful for select users, such as a widget or rss feeds, or emails or things of that sort. But it's probably only for a small segment.

Dynamic icons would be better for things like clocks, weather and stocks and such imo.

But even there, I wonder what impact they would have on battery life. I'm guessing not much, but if I'm wrong, I hope Apple lets you disable the dynamic icons too.

My apologies if it sounded hostile, but I see your points about the widgets.

Ok, but how about this. Being able to customize each app, like a widget? Cause the widgets in Droid, you can resize them, and have them in any spot. Why not be able to do the same to your iPhone, without having the same curved box in a 4x4 order?

You can reorder them, put them in any spot.

Quick mockup, are you wanting something like this? Because if so, I doubt it will ever happen. It's simply unattractive, and a very big part of Apple's mindset is on aesthetics.

I like the list for the most part. I really hope most of the software requests, especially the minor ones, get implemented sometime soon. It's not even like it would be difficult to have scrolling folders and the ability to edit/hide the names of applications and put your photos into albums, etc. This is stuff that should've always been part of the OS. Jailbreaking is a lousy solution to having these simple features. As for the hardware stuff: I think most of it would need to happen for the next big iPhone revamp in order for it to be "better" than the iPhone 4 and worth upgrading. So I'd except to see most of the more reasonable stuff listed in the very distant future.

If you like the list. Email it to Steve Jobs. He can get Apple's engineers working on it.

I hear his email is sjobs@apple.com ;)

The WSJ is reporting that apple is doing another redesign for the iPhone 5. Could this be the long awaited 4 inch iPhone?

i would really love the wireless/ota hdtv output, wireless hotspot, and downclocking during low cpu consumption.
the whole deleting straight from iphone would need a password, because someone is going to be an ****** and delete all your music and etc

I'm not so sure about 4 inch screen, but if so, i hope the iphone doesn't increase in size too much or even not increase size at all.
gorilla glass is fricking awesome, i would never be paranoid about things scratching my screen anymore. liquid metal, apple purchased that technology? strange
i would love the tegra3/4 gpu, because the iphone should be considered as an portable gaming machine too. plus they should put AutoCAD or Final Cut on the iphone. that would be awesome.
I would also like better camera, maybe like 8mp? And better lenses too plus xenon flash instead of some crappy led flash.

about the 3d screen, i don't know how useful that would be, because it is a touchscreen and your hand would be over it. there are already phones that do that like this one by motorola.

touchsensitive back would be dumb in my opinion. i don't see much use of it.

Long awaited by whom? I'm sorry, but there's a very significant portion of iPhone users that have no interest in a larger device. It's pushing size limitations for me already.

LOL I was going to say the same thing. It might have been more appropriate to say "Could this be MY long awaited 4 inch iphone"

142 is actually a very solid sample size.

Statistically speaking, a sample size of 142 equals a predictive power of .988, which translates to around 99%, pretty freaking high! :)

But see, you fail to take into account a biased poll. Try taking your poll again in a unbiased environment with these options:
- larger screen, larger device
- larger screen only if device size unchanged
- same size screen and device
- smaller device and/or screen

I'll bet my lunch you see different results.

And I'm sorry, I still don't see a grassroots poll of 140 people meaning much, no matter how you try to justify it.

Lol, do you even know what biased means?

The poll asked a simple question...

"Do you want to see a 4.5 inch screen on the next iPhone?"

And gave three choices "Yes" "No" and "I'm not sure"

And everyone was allowed to vote.

That's not biased in any way, shape, or form. It's as unbiased as a poll like this could be.

The overwhelming majority of people voted yes.

I don't think it's even possible to /facepalm without giving myself a brain hemorrhage at this point.
You keep thinking what you want to think, and we'll keep laughing.

Oh, and since you seem to believe you already know, I'll just leave this here for you:
unbiased or unbiassed (ʌnˈbaɪəst) [Click for IPA pronunciation guide]

—adj
1. having no bias or prejudice; fair or impartial
2. statistics
a. (of a sample) not affected by any extraneous factors, conflated variables, or selectivity which influence its distribution; random
b. (of an estimator) having an expected value equal to the parameter being estimated; having zero bias

Enjoy your 2398479283" iPhone. I'll gift you a handtruck for Christmas so you can lug it around.

Lol, way to attack me in five different ways without refuting a single point I made.

If anything, the poll would underestimate the # of people in the "real world" who want a bigger screen because this forum tends to be have a lot of .... for lack of a better word, fanboys. Or, rather, people who think that every decision Apple makes is the right one at the time.

That is a bad poll, though, because it needs more options. 4.5", 4.5" if everything is unchanged, 4.0", 4.0" if everything else...etc.

Too many options, and placing too many conditions on the poll choices actually makes things worse.

I agree with you that it would have been better if the poll asked...

"Would you like a 4.0" screen in the next iPhone?"

I think even a bigger majority of people would be in favor of that.

I don't want to beat this point because overall this is a pretty decent thread, but predictive power means nothing. You can't prove it right, I can't prove it wrong...

I think what Alerian is trying to get to is in one post you say you have data to prove that you have people that want bigger screens (somewhat based on a method) and he is trying to say your method is not very scientific. Your poll leaves too much to the imagination. In addition, a sample size of 150 people when there is hundreds of thousands of users on the forums, and thousands of people viewing the iphone section at any given time, with almost 9500 views to the specific thread is not very good. It could be argued that it shows that the options people want are not present. Also, don't be a republican and always think that undecided people always favor your side.

Sure.... I will take a 4.0/4.5 inch screen IF the device was absolutely the same size and there is no increase in price. But... we both know that cannot happen. You expect the consumers to know this, but that is not something you can assume. (BTW i can see you have recently edited your poll post, but do not know what you changed/added... my initial impression was that the post was extremely sparse).

Anyways, to close... I agree to many conditions can make things worse, but 3-4 well phrased choices would have given more useful information.

Most real world polls use a small group of people. 142 "fanbois" with the majority of said fanbois stating they want a 4.5" screen is a good basis. If there is a huge price difference between 4" and 4.5" then I would understand if Apple was prudent with going with the cheaper choice. I doubt they would cut into their profit margin just to get that extra 0.5". With that being said the screen size of the Evo at first appeared way to big for me. After comparing the sizes I have to say that I do like it. If Apple doesn't go with a slightly bigger screen with the next iteration I will definitely look at the competition.

Especially for a site called MacRumors, BEST THREAD EVER. If there were upvotes or likes you'd get one.

Somehow, I doubt this.

You haven't seen Android 3.0 "Gingerbread" yet. If they pull off, what they say they hope to, Apple could become just another phone. At the very least you could keep your old one. I've already got 2.
